I n what was a convincing mask of weariness the Gophers founders of the feast Dennis Dale and Jean Freeman, coaches of the men's and women's swimming and diving teams, saw Tuesday night pass with a collective breath of relief. The University Aquatic Center has been the epicenter of arguably the premier swimming event on U.S. soil for the last five days, and though understandably tired, Dale and Freeman both perked up as they recalled the championships that were and the athletes that made them memorable. "Lenny Krayzelburg's American record and his meet record in the 200 and 100 meter backstrokes," Dale mentioned when asked of his take on the most memorable moments. "Normally there is Jenny Thompson on the women's side, and now Lenny has stepped up to the plate and demonstrated that he is probably the best male swimmer in the U.S." Krayzelburg and Thompson are the two reasons that the 1999 national swimming championships might be remembered as the "Lenny and Jenny Show". A 23-year-old USC graduate and Russia native, Krayzelburg was responsible for giving the most to cheer about during the event, as he nearly made good on the pre-meet speculations that he could capture the world record in the 200-meter backstroke.

Men Stanford scored 599 points to defeat host Auburn (394 /2) and Texas (362 /2) for their eighth NCAA swimming and diving championship. Stanford's Tom Wilkens and Arizona's Ryk Neethling each won three events, but the Cardinal got much-needed help from Matthew Pierce (200 butterfly) and Tate Blahnik, who defeated world champion Lenny Krayzelburg of USC in the 200-yard backstroke. Stanford also claimed the 400-yard freestyle relay. SMU senior Lars Frolander won the 100-yard freestyle and the 100-yard butterfly and was named the tournament's most outstanding swimmer. Alabama's Brent Robert won the platform diving event while Rio Ramirez and Bryan Gillooly of Miami-FL took the 1-meter and 3-meter dives, respectively. ( Auburn, Ala.; Mar. 26-28, 1998.

Wrestling USC's Schubert to lead swim team in Olympics By Patrick Kinmartin Daily Trojan LOS ANGELES (U-WIRE) USC men's and women's swimming and diving coach Mark Schubert was selected Tuesday to be the head coach of the United States women's swim team at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Schubert, who coached the U.S. men's team in 2000 and the women's team in 1992, was caught off guard by the announcement made by USA Swimming. "I was really shocked, but very happy," Schubert said. "The women's team is going to be spectacular and I'm excited to be a part of it. Even if I was just there to carry Gatorade buckets, I'd be happy." The decision to select Schubert was made by the USA Swimming National Team Selection Committee, a group made up of coach and athlete representatives. Along with Schubert, the committee selected Texas swimming coach Eddie Reese to be the U.S. men's coach. "These are two of the premier coaches in the country," USA Swimming Executive Director Chuck Wielgus said. "They have a wealth of experience and are perfectly suited to lead our athletes at the 2004 games."
