Akron Athletic History
The University of Akron's storied athletic history dates back nearly 130 years. Now, 18 intercollegiate sports strong, with more than 350 student-athletes, the Akron Zips are 10 years into their Mid-American Conference membership and poised for academic and competitive growth well into this new millennium. The past and present of Akron athletics came together on September 8, 2001 when the Zip football team played Ohio State for the first time in more than 100 years at Ohio Stadium in front of more than 100,000 fans. Legendary coach John Heisman had in 1894 directed Buchtel College to a 12-6 win over the Buckeyes at the Ohio State Fairgrounds. Under the guidance of athletics director Michael J. Thomas, there is a momentum in the department which points toward an even brighter future. To be located across the street from James A. Rhodes Arena, a new Student Recreation and Wellness Center will open at UA in 2003. Also on the drawing board is a proposed Athletic Field House to be built adjacent to the Recreation Center. Plans include a 300-meter track, spectator seating, 100-yard turf field, varsity weight room, sports medicine facilities, indoor golf practice facility, batting cages, three locker rooms, equipment room, and office space. Both projects are part of a $200 million, five-year campus improvement program.
John Heisman On August 31, 2001, UA christened its newest intercollegiate sport when the Zip women's soccer team defeated Youngstown State, 3-1, at Lee Jackson Field. During the 1998-99 academic year, women's swimming and diving had joined the Zips' athletic family, affording women more opportunities to compete for the Blue and Gold.

Latest News - Lenny Krayzelburg
Welcome to the Lenny Krayzelburg section of Swimmer's Web . I was inspired to create it after meeting him at the FINA World Cup in Sydney and I must say that he is an extremely nice guy. He hung around for a long time after the meet to sign autographs and pose for pictures. Anyway, now for some news.
The battle royale between Lenny and Australia's Matt Welsh which started in Hobart continued to Sydney. In the 100m backstroke on Day 1, Lenny and Welsh were stroke for stroke in the first 50m. He was stroking faster in the second 50 and finished the race with a new championship record of 51.73. Welsh, who won the event in Hobart, was second in 52.25 and Canada's Chris Renaud was 3rd in 52.61.
The placings were reversed in the 50m backstroke with Welsh, the world record holder, winning in 24.29. Lenny was 2nd in 24.59 and Renaud a close 3rd with a time of 24.60. The 200m backstroke saw Lenny assert his authority over the field. He got off to a fantastic start which gave him a nice lead straight away. He extended his lead with each turn finishing in 1:52.56. Josh Watson was 2nd in 1:54.52 and after a timing error was realised, Welsh was 3rd in 1:55.13.
In an interview at the end of the meet, Lenny admitted that he was a bit "anxious" that he's swimming so well and worried that he might not be able to carry it off until the Olympics which is in 8 months.
