STANFORD MEN'S SWIMMING CLAIMS 22ND STRAIGHT PAC-10 TITLE 1-2-3 sweep in 200 backstroke on final day puts exclamation point on championship. March 8, 2003 Complete Results LONG BEACH, Calif. The Stanford Cardinal recorded their 22nd straight Pac-10 Men's Swimming championship this evening and recorded a sweep of the top three spots in the 200 backstroke on the final day to help them in their effort. The team total score of 879 was more than enough to sustain their streak of successive conference titles dating back to 1982. The 2003 Championships concluded at the Belmont Olympic Pool with California finishing second with 730.5 points followed by USC (619 pts.) in third, Arizona State (439 pts.) in fourth, Arizona (392.5 pts.) in fifth, and Washington (181pts.) in sixth. Arizona State earned their highest conference finish since 1998, when they also finished fourth. For the third straight year, USC's Erik Vendt came away with the Pac-10 title in the 1650 freestyle, this time in Pac-10 meet record fashion. The national leader in the event, Vendt clocked a 14:35.97 to better the previous mark of 14:36.32 set by Ryk Neethling of Arizona in 2000. Ous Mellouli ensured that the Trojans would have the top two finishers by recording a 14:58.53, an NCAA 'A' time. Matt Sorlien of Stanford rounded out the top three with a 15:05.87. Arizona State's Derek Miller finished sixth in a time of 15:23.38, a new career best.

Aquatics Water Polo Women’s water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football player’s skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby player’s strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the women’s division, while twelve teams compete in the men’s division at the Olympic Games.

Lenny Krayzelburg: The Newest American Champion
Ultimately, Lenny Krayzelburg, who became a U.S. citizen in 1995, would like to become America's newest Olympian and Olympic gold medalist. Lenny Krayzelburg—the name sounds made-up, like it should belong to a rock star. And with his classic, California-surfer good looks, Lenny looks the part. But though he's a star, Lenny is no rock musician. The recent University of Southern California grad is a double world swimming champion, an American record holder, and with his Horatio Alger rags-to-riches story, one of the hottest properties in the sport today. That's why Lenny's story will be featured on Turner Television during the Goodwill Games to be held in New York July 30-Aug. 2. Lenny Krayzelburg was born on Sept. 28, 1975 in Odessa—that's Odessa as in the late, unlamented USSR, not Odessa as in Texas—the first child of Oleg and Yelena Krayzelburg. The Krayzelburgs were middle-class in Russia's classless society: Oleg owned a coffee shop, and Yelena worked as an accountant at a shoe factory. But, in the USSR, especially because they are Jewish, their horizons were limited. Oleg and Yelena longed for a better life for Lenny and his sister Marsha in America. Lenny started swimming with a Red Army club in Odessa at the age of 5. "I really liked it," Lenny recalls, "especially because all of the kids in my class at school were on the team." He also liked the fact that his dad took a great interest in his swimming, attending many of the team's practice sessions.

- Lane 9 News - EXCLUSIVE: Lenny to Bypass Goodwill Games April 17, 2001 By Phillip Whitten
PHOENIX, Arizona. April 17. LENNY Krayzelburg, American triple gold medal winner at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, has decided to pass on competing at the Goodwill Games to be held in Brisbane, Australia, in August and September.
"I'll be swimming in a meet in Vancouver (British Columbia) in a few weeks, then go to the Mare Nostrum meets in Monte Carlo and Rome in June," he said. "Then, of course, I'll swim at the Maccabiah Games in Israel (in July). Then that will be it for me this season."
Krayzelburg, who has almost gotten down to his Olympic weight of 190 pounds, has been doing a new weight-training program and only recently, returned to serious training in the water. At the Maccabiah Games, he will face significant challenges in the 200m backstroke, as two Israelis have swum 2:00. Mark Schubert, Krayzelburg's coach at the Trojan Swim Club, told SWIMINFO that Lenny needed a break from his intensive training. "If Lenny's going to be at his best at the Olympics in 2004and that's the goalhe needs to take some time off and lower the intensity. So this break has been good.

Krayzelburg finds pools of gold
By Adrian Wojnarowski
Special to ESPN.com
SYDNEY, Australia - Lenny Krayzelburg was a beleaguered boy, 15 years old and peering to his parents at the kitchen table with the saddest little eyes. This was 1988, in the tiny apartment in Studio City, Calif., where a mother and father, a son and daughter, were fighting for a share of the long, lost American Dream. "I can't make it," Lenny said to Oleg and Yelena, telling them these long days and nights of high school, a part-time job cleaning the community pool, and evenings of swim practice had taken its toll. He had to have an education, needed a job, so he wanted to stop swimming. Just quit. They had come to the United States out of communist Russia, Jews desperate for a place to practice religion without persecution, where the world for their two children was one of hope instead of despair. Lenny Krayzelburg kisses the gold medal he won in the 100-meter backstroke.

SYDNEY, Australia - Swimmer Lenny Krayzelburg's whole tumultuous life flashed before him as he stood on the winner's podium Monday listening to the Star Spangled Banner after winning Olympic gold. Lenny Krayzelburg led the 100-meter backstroke from start to finish. The world champion added the Olympic men's 100-meter backstroke gold medal to his collection with a commanding victory Monday. The Ukrainian-born American seized the lead on the first length and held off the challenge from Australia's Matt Welsh down the return length to win in an Olympic-record 53.72 seconds. Welsh took the silver in 54.07 and world championship bronze medalist Stev Theloke of Germany collected an Olympic bronze in 54.82. The heavily-favored Krayzelburg finished just outside his world mark of 53.60 set at the Pan Pacific championships in the Sydney Games pool in August 1999 when he set world standards in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke. Krayzelburg led all the way in bettering the old mark of 53.86 set by American Jeff Rouse at the 1992 Olympics. But he was .12 off his own world record set in the same pool last year.

Lenny Krayzelburg just failed to break his own world record
America's Lenny Krayzelburg took the Olympic title and record to add to his world crown with victory in the men's 100m backstroke. Krayzelburg won in 53.72 to slice 0.14 off the time set by fellow countryman Jeff Rouse in 1992. It was the 17th Olympic record to be set in the pool in just three days of competition. But Krayzelburg made hard work of his win, nearly allowing Australia's Matt Welsh in during the final 20 metres. The Ukrainian-born American seized the lead on the first length, turning just 0.02 seconds outside world record schedule but he looked certain to break his own mark - 53.60 - midway through the final length. Concentration But a lapse in concentration cost him the record bid and nearly gold. Welsh took the silver in 54.07 and world championship bronze medallist Stev Theloke of Germany collected an Olympic bronze in 54.82. In the men's 200m butterfly, Stephen Parry kept British hopes alive with a third place finish in his semi-final heat for a place in the final.
