BIRTH
Greg Efthimios Louganis was born in El Cajon, CA on January 29, 1960.
He is the adopted son of Peter and Frances Louganis.
EDUCATION
During his childhood he struggled with dyslexia, asthma, and depression.
Received a BA in Drama at University of California.
He was an Olympic diver.
He began competing in diving at age 10. By 16, he had won his first Olympic medal. He is a six time World Champion and has held 47 National Championship titles.
He came out publicly as gay during the 1994 Gay Games in New York. He now acts, and does public speaking about AIDS. He announced he was HIV+ in a television interview on February 24, 1995.

SPORTS DAY ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., Feb. 10, 2003 - 'Succeed in sports, lead in life' is the theme of this year's Girls and Women in Sports Day, to be held from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, at St. Bonaventure University. Participating schools from all over the Southern Tier and Northwest Pennsylvania select 10 girls from grades 5 through 12, who either participate in school athletics or who lead a physically active lifestyle, to be a part of this national celebration. Dawn Staley, Temple University's women's basketball coach and former WNBA player for the Charlotte Sting, will do a brief question-and-answer session with the girls in the afternoon. Staley's own distinguished basketball career began at Dobbins Technical High School in North Philadelphia, where she was named USA Today 's national high school player of the year after leading her team to three Philadelphia public league championships. At the University of Virginia, Staley continued playing basketball and was named three-time Kodak All-American, helping her team to a 110-21 record and four NCAA tournaments, three of which went to the Final Four. She holds the NCAA record for steals (454), and was named national player of the year in 1991 and 1992.

GREGORY EFTHIMIOS LOUGANIS (b. Jan. 29, 1960, San Diego, Ca., U.S.), American diver generally considered the greatest diver in history. Born to unmarried high-school students (Samoan father and American Mother), abandoned soon after his few months, Louganis was adopted still as an infant, by Peter and Frances Louganis. His mother loved theatre and dancing so he trained very soon in dancing, tumbling, and acrobatics, skills that would later earn him a reputation as a graceful, effortless diver. Durning his childhood, he had always the feelings not to be loved sufficiently by his parents, becoming during years very shy, expecialy when other children begun calling him "stupid, nigger(for his brown skin), or faggot". He was a sensible, shy young boy with many personality problems, and all this surroundings let him search some other refugees in things he soon discovered was very good to do, all concerning acrobatics. He pushed over theese activities very hard, why here he could improve his self esteeme, doing easily things that others were afraid or uncapable to do !
His incredible talent and was soon discovered by double Olympian Dr.Sammy Lee, who convinced Greg and his parents that that small and shy diver could become an outstanding champion.

Diver's Degree Of Difficulty Was Outside The Pool

The Associated Press There was no public pool in his hometown in Puerto Rico, so Mark Ruiz began his diving career as furtively as a spy, stealing out of the house to jump from tree branches and ropes into a river. Sometimes, his mother would sneak him into hotel pools, where at least the water was clear, even if the coast was not. "Sometimes they would turn us back," Lydia Torres said, adding that the lifeguards came to recognize her son. "He used to entertain the tourists. There was a hotel, and they had a 3-meter springboard. Mark would go up and jump he was 3 or 4 years old and the people used to watch. He wasn't into swimming, or trying to cross the pool. He only wanted to jump." Eight years ago, Ruiz and his mother moved to Orlando, Fla., to pursue his diving career, and now, at 21, he represents the best hope for a medal by an American at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney, Australia. The Olympic trials begin tomorrow in Federal Way, Wash., where Ruiz is favored to win the 3-meter springboard and 10-meter platform competitions. If he wins a medal in Sydney, he will dedicate it to his mother, whose uncommon sacrifice and perseverance have given personal resonance to the familiar diving term, degree of difficulty. "My whole career is for her," Ruiz said.

And learn some basic rules for safe diving."-Greg Louganis Think Ahead Once you've started your dive, you don't have time to think. Know the depth of the water. Plan your dive path. Never dive where you don't know water depth or where there may be hidden obstructions. Steer Up When you dive down, you must be ready to steer up. As you enter the water, your arms must be extended over your head, hands flat and aiming up. Hold your head up and arch your back. This way, your whole body helps you steer up, away from the bottom. Plan a shallow dive, immediately steering up. Don't try to the straight vertical-entry dives you see in competition. These dives take a long time to slow down and must be done only after careful training and in pools designed for competitive diving.
