Famous Olympians
Social Studies: Challenging (Grades 5-8)
Objective
Students learn about famous Olympic athletes.
Materials
  • Famous Olympians activity sheet pencils
Directions
If the names of famous Olympians were placed end to end, they could probably circle the globe many times. This activity provides an introduction to a few who earned the gold. Students may wish to read to find out more about them. It is hoped that they will continue their search to become acquainted with other equally famous Olympic Games stars. U.S. Olympic Games Stars In Athletics (track and field) events, the name of Jesse Owens, the sharecropper's son from Alabama, always tops the list of favorite Olympians. His four gold medals won at the 1936 Berlin Olympic Games discredited Hitler's notion of German superiority over other races. In 1984, another track sensation by the name of Carl Lewis matched Jesse Owens' performance of 28 years before and went on to excel in the 1988, 1992, and 1996 Games. Babe Didrikson was the track star of the 1932 Olympic Games, capturing a gold medal for the U.S. in the javelin throw and another in the 800-meter hurdles. She went on to become a golf star and is still considered one of the most versatile female athletes. The decathlon winner usually holds the honor of being considered the world's best athlete. In 1948, Bob Mathias became the youngest man to earn the gold. Four years later he won again at the age of 21. Other honored decathlon winners include Rafer Johnson (1960), Bill Toomey (1968), Bruce Jenner (1976), and Dan O'Brien (1996).

Do's and Don'ts of Diving "Diving is a sport that almost everyone can enjoy, either as a participant or as a spectator. But as with every other sport, injuries can spoil the fun for everyone. So to get the most pleasure from diving and to avoid serious injuries, don't take needless risks. And learn some basic rules for safe diving." - Greg Louganis Greg Louganis on how to dive. Think Ahead. Once you've started your dive, you don't have time to think. Know the depth of the water. Plan your dive path. Never dive where you don't know water depth or where there may be hidden obstructions. Steer Up. When you dive down, you must be ready to steer up. As you enter the water, your arms must be extended over your head, hands flat and aiming up. Hold your head up and arch your back. This way, your whole body helps you steer up, away from the bottom. Plan a shallow dive, immediately steering up. Don't try the straight vertical-entry dives you see in competition. These dives take a long time to slow down and must be done only after careful training and in pools designed for competitive diving. Heads and Hands Up.

U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame
Table of Contents
History
The hall of fame was established in 1983 by the U. S. Olympic Committee. At this point, it exists only on paper. A museum building had been planned, but construction has been held up for lack of funding. No elections have been held since 1992. With sponsorship from Coca-Cola, the USOC is again looking into the possibility of holding more elections and ultimately building a home for the hall. Top of Page

The Butterfly stroke was permissible in Breaststroke events up to and including 1952. Between 1912 and 1928 diving events were decided by ordinals rather by points.
