1999 MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONS
They came, they fought, they conquered. With a third-place ranking going into the 1999 NCAA Championships, the Tigers went to the IU Natatorium on the prowl, looking to bring the NCAA title back to the Plains. Finishing second in 1998 in their home pool left a sour taste in the mouth of the Auburn men and made them hungry for victory. However, with no divers available, Auburn was going to have to fight for every point they earned. Having at least 39 teams and 250 athletes entered into the competition, AU knew that this would be no easy triumph. Head coach David Marsh believed the key to Auburn’s success would rely on the team leaders taking charge as well as the freshman stepping up to contribute to the team. Auburn made their presence known early as the Tigers swam a time of 1:16.50 in the 200 free relay during prelims, setting a U.S. Open, NCAA and NCAA meet record. That energy and enthusiasm set a pace that would catapult the Tigers through the rest of the meet. "On the first day, our goal wasn’t necessarily to set a record. Time wasn’t the issue, we just wanted to get our hand on the wall first and get our 40 points," team captain Aaron Ciarla said. "We were just focusing on one session at a time. We just went out gunning for it."

TIGERS FINISH SECOND AT NCAA SWIMMING AND DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS-Mar. 25, 2000
Minneapolis, Minn.- The Auburn Tigers men's swim team finished second at the NCAA Championships with a total of 385 points. The Texas Longhorns took the title with 538 points, 153 points ahead of Auburn. This marks the third time in six years that the Tigers finished second at the meet. Overall, the Tigers won one event, the 200-meter free relay, which set a U.S. Open record and earned 44 All-America honors. Greg Busse led with six All-America honors while Dave Denniston earned five. "I feel very good about this team. I like the look of it. Taking a look back at the whole year, this was probably the most improved team we have ever had during the course of one season," said Head Coach David Marsh. "We didn't put all of the pieces together at NCAA's but the challenge continues." In points, the Tigers were led by Kevin Clements and Jeff Somensatto, who scored 38 points each, of AU's total points. Clements finished third in the 400 IM, fourth in the 200 IM and 10th in the 1500 free while Somensatto placed third in the 200 fly and eighth in both the 200 IM and 100 fly. Denniston was second for the Tigers in points with 36 but had the two highest finishes as he placed second in both the 100 and 200 breast and 15th in the 200 IM. During Saturday prelims, Denniston held the American record in the 200 breast with a time of 2:08.16 but Ed Moses followed with a time of 2:08.07 to break Denniston's record. In the finals, Denniston swam 2:09.46 and finished second to Moses once again as the University of Virginia sophomore set the world record with a time of 2:06.40.

In the morning prelims, Thompson broke another long-standing Mary T. Meagher record, swimming a 59.80, which dropped Meagher's 1985 meet record. Prior to finals, Meagher made a surprise appearance to give Thompson with a gift and say a few words in front of the San Antonio audience. The two superstars had never met and the occasion seemed to spur Thompson on.

Auburn runs away with its first team title; Michigan finishes 7th, wins 800 free relay
By John Friedberg Daily Sports Writer MINNEAPOLIS - Blonds really do have more fun. That old saying defined the 74th annual NCAA men's swimming and diving championships, as blond-dyed Auburn took home its first-ever title with 496.5 points. After the first day, the only question remaining was who would fill out the top five. For the first time since the 1991 season, the answer did not include the Wolverines, who finished the three-day competition in seventh place with 209 points. "Coming into this meet, I figured in my mind, (we would place) between eight and four," Michigan coach Jon Urbanchek said. "To be fourth place would be the ultimate goal, and it would have had to have been a perfect meet. But it didn't quite materialize." Stanford, Georgia, Texas and Tennessee filled out the top five. The hardest-fought competition was for fifth place, as Tennessee edged Southern Cal 235.5-235, for the hardware. Auburn dominated all three days, taking four of the five relays. The Tigers won only one individual title - Brett Hawke in the 50-yard freestyle - but placed at least one swimmer in the finals in all but four of the 13 individual swimming events.

Malchow keeps upstart frosh in line
By Jon Zemke
Daily Sports Writer INDIANAPOLIS - In a rare occurrence, there was a tie for fourth place in the 500 freestyle finals between Michigan senior Tom Malchow and his teammate, freshman Tim Siciliano. The two had been swimming the final heat neck-and-neck the entire race; Malchow - an Olympic silver medalist - in lane seven and Siciliano in eight. When they hit the wall the lane timers' thumbs had clocked the same time: 4:17.48. The time was a personal best for both of them, breaking their old records by two seconds. Both were incredibly surprised by the result. "Freshmen - you take your eyes off them for a second and they get in trouble," Malchow said.
KELLY MCKINNELL/Daily
Michigan senior Tom Malchow, swimming in his last meet as a Wolverine, finished tied for fourth in the 500 freestyle with freshman teammate Tim Siciliano. But it was Malchow who was a step ahead at the award ceremonies, assuming the fourth-place position on the podium while Siciliano stood at fifth. But during the awards ceremony, Malchow kept Siciliano in line after the race. The podium was comfortable for one person, but it was possible to fit two men.

For 10 years, starting in 1986, Michigan was the Big Ten Champion in men's swimming and diving. But a funny thing happened on their way to the way to a 11th consecutive championship Minnesota beat the Wolverines soundly. Last year, Michigan exacted it's revenge, winning back the championship by 17 points. It should be a battle between those two teams again this year. If the Gophers hold true to form, they will get off to a good start. At last year's championships, Minnesota jumped out to a 200-178 lead on the first day of competition, but slowly fell back to Michigan, eventually losing 648-631. The good news for Minnesota is that it has found ample replacements for the swimmers and divers it lost last year. All of freshman Alex Massura's statistics are impressive. He has Minnesota's top six times in the 200-yard backstroke, and he has a total of 16 first-place finishes in various events this year. Perhaps the most impressive fact is that he's already broken a school record. Most records fall during the championships, when swimmers are rested.
