Termin To Receive Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service
Buffalo's Men's Swimming Coach Recognized for Outstanding Performance
University at Buffalo head men's swimming and diving coach Budd Termin has been selected to receive the prestigious State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service. The award, instituted in 1977, provides "SUNY-wide recognition for superlative performance and outstanding achievement by professional service employees." Termin was nominated to receive the award by Judith Adams-Volpe, Co-Chair of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board, for his unique approach to coaching based upon his research on the biomechanics of swimming and the development of a patented training system. Recipients of the Chancellor's Award must be serving in full-time professional capacities with more than half of their assignment in non-teaching services, and they must have completed at least three years of continuous full-time professional service in that position. They are described as individuals "who embody SUNY's highest standards and who inspire and serve as role models for the entire university community," and "who have repeatedly sought improvement of themselves, their campuses and ultimately the State University and in so doing, have transcended the normal definitions of excellence." Termin undoubtedly fits those descriptions based upon his 14-year history of outstanding athletic and scientific achievements at UB.

Susie O'Neill on track for Sydney
Susie O'Neill's medal prospects look strong for the Sydney Games. She talked to ABC's Gerry Collins about her Olympic hopes following her success at the US Open Championships in December 1999. Susie O'Neill is one of Australia's most recognisable and successful swimmers, having won gold in the 200m butterfly at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
The woman dubbed "Madam Butterfly" is under enormous pressure to repeat the feat in front of an adoring home crowd at the Sydney International Aquatic Centre come September.
To cope with this, she says she simply tunes out.

Postcards From Sydney Princeton was well-represented down under Susan Teeter, Princeton's women's swimming coach, had been there before. Twice as head manager for the U.S. Women's Swim Team. So has Princeton's heavyweight crew coach Curtis Jordan, who was there for the fourth time. Perhaps that's why these Princeton coaches can best attest to the magic of each Olympic Games. For though both had varied impressions and different expectations (some unmet and some exceeded) of Sydney, their memories of it are singularly special. "You are going to the world of swimming when you travel to Australia," marvels Teeter. "You can't understand how important swimming is to them. Their star swimmers, like Ian `The Thorpedo' Thorpe and Susie O'Neill have the stature of Michael Jordan in the U.S. Six-year-old kids know every swimmer's name. Everyone follows the sport." But American swimmers were up to the task of challenging the Aussies' hallowed status, and one of Teeter's greatest Olympic moments was when U.S. swimmer Misty Hyman upset O'Neill, world-record holder and national hero, in the 200 butterfly. "It was a tremendous victory for Misty, but it was eerie watching 500 Americans wave flags in the arena, while the remaining 17,500 fans just sat down. It really illustrated the pressure the Australian swimmers were under and magnified their capacity to deflate a nation if they lost. The upset was stunning in that respect."

'Madame Butterfly' has American accent
By Steve Wilstein
Associated Press
SYDNEY, Australia Her round cheeks glowing, her blue eyes sparkling, Misty Dawn Hyman popped out of the water so full of joy and so thoroughly stunned that she had to look at the scoreboard three times to make sure she won. Misty Hyman talked about leaving the sport in May. Now she has a gold medal and an Olympic record. "Oh, my God! I don't believe it," she said over and over Wednesday as she saw her time, 2 minutes, 5.88 seconds, an Olympic record in the 200-meter butterfly, and her name ahead of Susie O'Neill, Australia's "Madame Butterfly," the defending Olympic champion and world record holder. No one could believe it. Not Hyman, who was so filled with self-doubt that she almost quit swimming in May. Certainly not O'Neill, who wore a pained expression at the medals ceremony, as if she were being given ashes and coal instead of flowers and silver. Hyman couldn't stop beaming, even as she sang the "Star-Spangled Banner" with her hand on her heart and the gold medal dangling from a blue ribbon around her neck. In the middle of the song, she just had to throw back her head, shake her long honey-colored hair and take a deep, deep breath.
