Susie O'Neill gave the home crowd plenty to shout about
Australia's Susie O'Neill gave the home crowd another gold medal to cheer in the pool when she held on to win the 200m freestyle. The Commonwealth champion could not contain her delight as the passionate supporters chanted her name. O'Neill, who was fastest in Monday's heats and semi-finals, saw off a determined late spurt from Slovakia's Martina Moravcova to win in 1 minute 58.24 seconds. Defending champion Claudia Poll, who was bidding to become the first woman to retain the crown, had to settle for a bronze medal. The Costa Rican also took bronze in Sunday's 400m freestyle. "That was pretty painful," O'Neill said. "Thank goodness it's over, I'm so relieved I finished." The 27-year-old, who plans to hang up her goggles after the Olympics after marrying her childhood sweetheart last year, trailed Moravcova at the end of the first lap before making her move at the 70 metre mark. She stretched her lead to 0.55 when they turned for home but with the capacity crowd, which included Australian Prime Minister John Howard, willing her to victory she thrashed her slender arms through the water to reach the wall first.

SYDNEY, Australia Misty Hyman sank Madame Butterfly. Hyman, a 21-year-old from Phoenix, stunned defending champion Susie O'Neill of Australia to win the 200-meter butterfly Wednesday in front of a raucous Aussie crowd at the Olympic pool. "I had to look three times, I really did," Hyman said. "Then I started screaming and shaking." Pieter van den Hoogenband won his second gold medal Wednesday. Hyman led all the way to win in an Olympic record 2 minutes, 5.88 seconds, just missing O'Neill's world record by seven one-hundredths of a second. "I've played it over so many times in my head, but I never thought it would come true," said Hyman, who, discouraged by health problems and slow times, was ready to quit swimming in May. In her signature race, O'Neill finished second in 2:06.58. Petria Thomas of Australia took bronze in 2:07.12. O'Neill, known as "Madame Butterfly," broke the oldest record in swimming in May at the Australian Olympic trials when she lowered Mary T. Meagher's 19-year-old world record.

Craig Townsend's Mind Training - Goals
Has it ever seemed that the harder you try, the further away from your goal you become?    This is often experienced by swimmers whose desire to achieve a major goal becomes so all-consuming that they have trouble thinking about anything else .  This often creates the situation where (much to their frustration) the goal appears to be moving further away from them instead of getting closer. This brings us to the subject of trying too hard in races, instead of just focusing on the race itself. I am not talking about going into races

By CHLOE SALTAU
9:58PM, Sep 19 Having crowned herself a freestyler, Susie O'Neill tonight switched strokes and positioned herself in a familiar lane for the final of her most familiar and brilliant event, the 200 metre butterfly. She also characterised herself, again, as the nemesis of Petria Thomas. The last time O'Neill swam the 200-metre butterfly in front of a raging crowd at Homebush, she chased the yellow world record line. Tonight she chased Thomas' yellow cap, and proceeded to overtake it with a few metres to spare. She is now poised to defend her Olympic butterfly title from lane four, after emerging fastest from the semi-finals, the sound of the crowd chanting 'Susie, Susie' still ringing in her waterlogged ears. If she was not completely in her watery element as she churned through the pool in the 200m freestyle event she resisted until a couple of years ago, she was now in the fly.

O'Neill etches her name in history By JOHN LINGARD
7:20PM, Sep 23 Susie O'Neill felt more like the 'silver fish' of the pool but the golden oldie still etched her name in history today and was treated to an Olympic farewell befitting the first lady of Australian swimming. 'Susie's Angels' saved their best for last and broke the world record in the 4x100m medley relay but it was not good enough to beat an awesome United States team that defended their Atlanta gold. The Americans, inspired by comeback queen Dara Torres and six-time relay gold medallist Jenny Thompson, were simply unbeatable. Their time of three minutes 58.30 seconds smashed the previous world best (4:01.67) set by the suspect Chinese at Rome in 1994. Australia fought bravely for second but were always playing catch-up. Their 4:01.59 was almost a second inside the Olympic record set by the US in Barcelona.

SENATOR THE HON ROD KEMP
Minister for the Arts and Sport Media Release Thomas and Rizzo share - AIS Althlete of the year award The Federal Minister for the Arts and Sport, Senator Rod Kemp, today congratulated joint winners of the 2001 AIS Athlete of the Year award, swimmer Petria Thomas and gymnast Philippe Rizzo. It is the first time in the 19-year history of the prestigious AIS Athlete of the Year award that two athletes have shared the top honour. It was also an outstanding year for Rizzo, who created history at the 2001 World Championships in Belgium by becoming the first Australian gymnast to win a world championship medal. Rizzo scored an incredible 9.725 on the high bars to win silver. He also won gold medals at the World Student Games and the Goodwill Games. Representing Senator Kemp at the AIS awards ceremony, the Member for Eden-Monaro, Mr Gary Nairn, said 2001 had been an exceptional year for the AIS. A full list of winners appears on the next page.
