AP NEW YORK (AP) On a winter's day, James Blake gave a clinic for children at the Harlem Tennis Center, the old wood-floored armory where Arthur Ashe once did the same when Blake was a child. Advertisement To Blake's regret, he doesn't remember meeting Ashe and didn't learn much about him until his death from an AIDS-related illness 10 years ago Thursday, when Blake was 13. "The more I learned about him, the more impressed I was with him," Blake said before going to Croatia to play this weekend for the U.S. Davis Cup team, as Ashe did with distinction so many times. "He made such a difference in this world and it overshadows what he did as a tennis player. What I learned from Arthur was to be a well-rounded person, to make academics as important as tennis. That's what worked for him and that's what worked for me. That's something I try to pass on to kids." What Ashe did is still making a difference. His spirit is alive in programs he started in education, urban health, junior tennis and the fight against AIDS.

SportsLine.com wire reports LONDON An Israeli-Pakistani doubles team won the ATP's Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award on Thursday for promoting "tolerance through tennis." Advertisement Israel's Amir Hadad , a Jew, and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi , a Muslim, played doubles at Wimbledon and the U.S Open last year. "During a summer when fear and hatred garnered much of the headlines, Amir and Aisam-ul-Haq provided much needed relief with their simple message about tolerance through tennis," ATP chief executive Mark Miles said. The award comes on the 10th anniversary of Ashe's death. Ashe was the first black man to win the U.S Open in 1968, one of his 33 titles. Ashe fought racism during a career in which he was an ambassador for his sport. A tennis stadium in New York is named for him. Hadad and Qureshi reached the third round at Wimbledon and the second round at the U.S Open.

Free Email Newsletter Arthur Ashe: A Spirit To Remember by Donald Dell
Arthur Ashe died February 6, 1993 at the age of 49, struck down by AIDS contracted from a blood transfusion. I will forever cherish Arthur's memory, yet there is a void in all our lives because such a beautiful human being is no longer with us. In 1997, the USTA paid tribute with the naming of Arthur Ashe Stadium, site of one of the most prestigious tennis tournaments, the U.S. Open. Every summer we will be reminded of what he meant to the game. More important, the essence of his life will hopefully pass down to younger generations. Tennis champion, commentator, author, activist, humanitarian- Arthur was all of these things. In his last book, Days of Grace, completed just weeks before he died, he wrestled with the search for meaning in his life. Fear not, Arthur, for your soul should rest easy; in your usual subdued, dignified way, you made an indelible mark. So much so that, four years on, we still feel your absence every day. I first met Arthur Ashe in the 1960s when we were competitors in tennis. Arthur was a man whose word was solid. Once you earned his trust, he was unflagging in his support. I represented Arthur throughout his career without a contract; we would "renew" each year on a handshake. Jerry Maguire, this was not! But, that was Arthur.

Ashe's impact reached far beyond the court

Special to ESPN.com
After he contracted the AIDS virus he was asked, 'Is this the hardest thing you've ever had to deal with?' And he said, 'No, the hardest thing I've ever had to deal with is being a black man in this society says author Ralph Wiley about Arthur Ashe on ESPN Classic's SportsCentury series. The tennis "firsts" were served up and chronicled through most of Arthur Ashe's life. They often arrived hand in hand with his color: first African-American male to win the U.S. championship, first to win at Wimbledon, first to play for the U.S. Davis Cup team, and on and on. Arthur Ashe won the 1968 U.S. Open as an amateur. While sports record books dutifully mark these achievements, civil rights and health historians embrace a more substantive image of the man who seldom shied from fighting for what he believed was right. His fight lasted to the final days of a much-publicized bout with AIDS, a personal struggle he had hoped to keep private. An independent thinker who considered himself a moderate, Ashe crusaded against South African apartheid and the treatment of Haitian refugees. He pushed for higher academic standards for athletes, particularly for minorities. He raised millions of dollars for inner-city tennis centers and the United Negro College Fund, started the African- American Athletic Association and wrote

Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center
The Arthur Ashe Youth Tennis Center is located at 4015 Main Street in Manayunk (19127). It is the only indoor training center in the country just for children ages 4-18. It provides youth tennis lessons to over 1200 children each year. It is the AAYTC’s belief that introducing youth to tennis also teaches important life lessons, including sportsmanship, independence, and understanding of others. The AAYTC welcomes all children; those who cannot afford it play at no cost.
Statistics
  • Every 26 seconds an American child runs away from home. The dropout rate of inner-city public schools is hovering at 50%. Children who get involved in sports and after-school activities tend to stay in school and get better grades. Many children who get involved in activities such as tennis not only complete high school but also parlay their tennis skills into college scholarships. “Tennis is just a hook, a catalyst for teaching other, more important lessons.” – Arthur Ashe

-Bob Lipper
Richmond, Virginia Times
A Pioneer Athlete and Hero Arthur Ashe broke down many barriers in his lifetime allowing other African-Americans to be able to participate in tennis and all other sports without the discrimination his race often faced in the 1950's. His best years came when he was done playing games, and the humanitarian side of Ashe was exposed. Ashe needed extraordinary qualities to become a champion on the tennis court, and those qualities ended up giving us much more than memories of a great athlete.
Arthur Robert Ashe, Jr., was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1943. Due to segregation, Ashe was excluded from playing at any of the local tennis clubs and camps. Nevertheless, at age ten, Ashe picked up a tennis racquet for the first time and learned to play in a local public park. His father arranged for him to work with Dr. Walter Johnson, who coached Althea Gibson, the first black player ever to win a Grand Slam title. Dr. Johnson guided Ashe throughout his youth on and off the court. He carried him through an outstanding high school tennis career that earned him a tennis scholarship at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
