Mahesh Bhupathi for Tata Open Tennis
Times of India - Dec 26, 2001 Mumbai: Mahesh Bhupathi has received the first wild card entry to the singles draw of the Tata Open 2002 Tennis championships in Chennai, it was announced by tournament director Sheila Maniam. “We are pleased to award a wild card to Mahesh Bhupathi for the upcoming Tata Open 2002,” said Mrs. Maniam. “He is a crowd-favourite in Chennai, and the enthusiastic support he receives at Nungambakkam stadium will definitely boost his performance at the tournament. Since the Tata Open is the only ATP event in India, it is only fitting that the home crowd gets to cheer one of their own,” she said. Mahesh Bhupathi will compete against the best field ever in the history of the tournament, with the likes of Guillermo Canas, Thomas Johansson, Fabrice Santoro, Andrei Pavel, Domnic Hrbaty, Max Mirnyl, and two time French Open champion Sergei Bruguera.

Mahesh Bhupathi creates Indian tennis history
AGENCE FRANCE PRESSE PARIS, June 7: Mahesh Bhupathi celebrated his 23rd birthday today by becoming the first Indian ever to win a Grand Slam in the Open era, teaming up with Japan's Rika Hiraki to win the French Open mixed doubles. Bhupathi and Hiraki, seeded 16th here, upset top-seeds Lisa Raymond and Patrick Galbraith of the United States 6-4, 6-1 in a surprisingly one-sided final which lasted just 58 minutes. Like Bangalore-based Bhupathi, Hiraki also became her country's first ever Grand Slam winner in the post-1968 Open era. The 25-year-old Lebanon-born Hiraki and Madras-born Bhupathi got just the start they wanted, breaking to 2-1 in the first set. Raymond and Galbraith broke back for 4-4 but a further break followed, leaving right-hander Bhupathi to serve out for the set at 6-4. In the second set, it was one way traffic as Hiraki and Bhupathi notched up three breaks against their shell-shocked opponents. Afterwards, they revealed their successful partnership had come about by coincidence. ``I was walking in the players area of the Suzanne Lenglen Court,'' explained Hiraki. ``He (Bhupathi) seemed to be looking for someone and then he asked my coach, who was standing behind me. I just had to find somebody.''

USTA: Questions. Q. How does it feel after winning the '97 French Open and '98 Wimbledon finals, coming and winning this US Open Grand Slam? MAHESH BHUPATHI: I mean, obviously a Grand Slam is a Grand Slam. It's very special, you know. The more you can win, the better. This is the second time we're playing together. The first time we got a little unlucky at the French in the quarters. We basically have a lot of fun. We're just enjoying it now. Q. How about you? AI SUGIYAMA: It's great. This is my first Grand Slam title. I've been enjoying playing with Mahesh. I feel so good about it. Q. You won with a Japanese twice. What is the secret? Is it coincidence? What's the luck? MAHESH BHUPATHI: That's exactly it, I think. Japanese girls are lucky for me (laughter). Q. How did you two happen to get together? AI SUGIYAMA: This time? MAHESH BHUPATHI: I think I asked her to play at the French Open.

THE MODERATOR: First question, please.
Q. Congratulations?
MAHESH BHUPATHI: Thank you.
Q. How does it feel to win your first Grand Slam together?
MAX MIRNYI: Very good. Any Grand Slam is good, but we've known each other for a long time. I think we started to play on tour about maybe the same time. So finally after this many years, it's good to win such a big tournament.
Q. What is it that makes you such a winning team, Max MAX MIRNYI: Well, this is actually maybe our first title this year. MAHESH BHUPATHI: Yeah. MAX MIRNYI: So it's a good one to win. We had good results in general, but I think the fact that we try to stay positive and work hard through many ups and downs, because there are many. No matter how good you play, there's always letdowns. It's a matter of how fast you come out of it, how well you support each other. I think we do that very well for one another. That's why we are having a good year so far. Q.

From News Dispatches
TENNIS
NEW DELHI: Former world doubles champions Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi, who recently separated for the second time, will, most probably, play together in India’s Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Group I second round tie, to be held in Wellington from April 5 to 7. A win will give the team entry into the world group qualifying round. “There’s no doubt about fielding them as our doubles pair (against New Zealand). But over a period of time, they will have to work it out. At least, prior to Davis Cup matches, which will be in the next stage, they will have to play some events together,” India’s nonplaying captain Ramesh Krishnan was quoted as saying in news reports. Krishnan said he rated the duo’s chances of winning the doubles rubber against New Zealand high as “they have had enough success together. Especially with reference to this particular tie, I feel they have played enough. Doubles is our strength and we should win that.”
