Lindsay Davenport is currently the top-ranked femme, but Martina Hingis, Jana Novotna and Anna Kournikova are up there, too. With the men, you're lucky if recognize any of the players on the court. The top team on the men's tour is comprised of two "who-dat?"s that failed to make the main singles draw of the U.S. Open. One is ranked No. 180 in singles and didn't qualify. His partner is ranked a hard-on-the-eyes 301 and didn't bother trying to go solo. Still, put them on the same side of the net and, quite simply, they're magicians. For the uninitiated, we're talking about Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes

The World Doubles Challenge Cup, as the revived version of the 2001 ATP World Doubles Championship has been designated, is all set to commence at the Karnataka State Lawn Tennis Association (KSLTA) Stadium from January 29, 2002. Eight out of the top 10 doubles pairs have confirmed entry and the focus obviously would be on India's very own Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, who are ranked number four in the world.
The KSLTA had signed a two-year contract with ATP Tour, the promoters of world men's tennis, to host the World Doubles event in 2000 and 2001. The year 2001, however, turned out to be topsy turvy with the event getting a short shrift post September 11, after it was advanced and restored due to the Indian government's dilly dallying with the dates of the Afro-Asian Games, the dates of which originally clashed with the mega tennis event.
With the global security scenario changing due to the September 11 attacks on US and the subsequent war in Afghanistan, the doubles championship got cancelled. The ATP was initially reluctant to reschedule the event as the tennis stars had a tight calendar. Thanks to the efforts of India's tennis Ambassador Vijay Amritraj and the ready acceptance of the top players to participate in the tournament, the event has been revived as the World Doubles Challenge Cup.

Doubles Specialist Mahesh Bhupathi Captures WTT Male MVP Honor For The Eastern Conference Champion New York Buzz
After leading the New York Buzz to the Eastern Conference Championship and a spot in the 2002 WTT Finals, doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi was named the WTT Pro League Male MVP. For his success this summer, the League also awarded him a check for $15,000. Bhupathi was an integral part of the Buzz's success this season, helping his team to a League-best record of 11-3 and a return to the WTT Finals for the first time since 1998. He teamed with Justin Bower to finish the regular season as the League's #2 ranked men's doubles tandem, with a 65-46 record (0.596 pct.), one game behind Sacramento's men's squad. Bhupathi also anchored the League's #1 mixed doubles team, pairing with Nannie de Villiers, Liezel Huber and Lindsay Davenport throughout the season to post a 64-52 record (0.552 pct.).
"This award is the culmination of a great team effort," said Bhupathi. "We might not have had the biggest names on our team, but we fought hard when the chips were down and that was the difference. I played men's doubles and mixed doubles all summer and I have to give a lot of credit to my partners who played well this season."

Lesson#1 LESSON #2
Know thy opponent.
But first, know thy coach.
The seeds of the Tennis Village were sown about 60 years ago in Peddapuram, a little village in Andhra Pradesh, India, when C Suryanarayana, an avid tennis player and enthusiast, promoted the game amongst his children.
One of them grew up to be India's no.1 junior - C G Krishna Bhupathi, who, over the years has done more than
his fair share for Indian tennis, promoting the sport throughout the country and playing a significant role in
making Mahesh, his son, the tennis player that he is today. CGK's vision of the Tennis Village, essentially a nursery where the sport can be taught to enthusiasts, was realised
when Nike, the world's leading sportswear brand, decided to partner him.
Both Nike and CGK are focused on their objective of making the Village the hub of tennis training in South Asia.

FORMER REBEL STANDOUT REACHES DOUBLES SEMIFINALS AT U.S. OPEN
NEW YORK Former NCAA Doubles Champion for Ole Miss, Mahesh Bhupathi, teamed with Leander Paes (India) to reach the Doubles Semifinals at the U.S. Open Championships before falling in a tight match to the No. 4 seeded team Wednesday. The duo, ranked No. 8 in the world entering the U.S. Open, fell 7-6(4), 7-6(2) to fourth-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov (Russia) and Daniel Vacek (Czechoslovakia).
Bhupathi and Paes have enjoyed plenty of success lately as they captured the du Maurier Open in Canada, and the Pilot Pen International Tournament, leading up to the U.S. Open.
"Mahesh is establishing himself as one of the top players in the world," Ole Miss men's tennis coach Billy Chadwick said. "He proved it to the college world when he led us to the finals of the NCAA Team Championships and won the NCAA Doubles title. He is a great representative of our tennis program, the University and all of college tennis."
A former All-American and SEC Athlete of the Year, Bhupathi has earned more than $200,000 in his second full year on the pro circuit. Earlier this year, he teamed with Japan's Rika Hiraki to win the Mixed Doubles title at the French Open Championships, becoming the first Ole Miss men's tennis player to capture a grand slam title.

Bhupathi-Woodbridge duo brings tourney to life By Nirmal Shekar
Chennai Jan. 1. A quiet casting revolution has taken place. The script has been radically re-written. The supporting cast will play the lead roles. And the main actors will step in when asked to, quietly say their piece and depart! Welcome, then, to Tata Open 2003. As the new year dawned, so indeed did the new reality in Indian tennis. Surely, this gives a new dimension to sports marketing. While few will argue against scheduling doubles matches involving Indians on the centre court, it becomes a case of misplaced priorities when they are offered prime-time feature slots on the main stage. This is a bit like trying to sell Madonna as Mozart. The heroics of Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes, who won four titles here, have certainly captured the imagination of fans in this tennis-loving city.
