" TARGET="_blank"> " BORDER=0> GOLDSEA ASIAMS.NET ASIAN AMERICAN ISSUES Michael Chang: Time to Retire from Tennis?
(Updated Monday, Apr 14, 2003, 10:30:41 PM) hirteen years ago Michael Chang was lionized as the youngest man ever to win the French Open and the first American male to win in 36 years. This year he quietly exited Roland Garros after blowing a two-set-to-love lead in a first-round match with an obscure Frenchman ranked 224th.
Played Out?
Chang himself has ceased being a marquee name except in cities like Hong Kong, Beijing and Taipei. His ATP ranking has slipped to 116th from 73rd at the end of 2001. For the first five months of 2002 his prize money totaled a paltry $53,835 compared with $483,000 in 2000, $1.2 million in 1997 and a high of $2 million in 1995. Michael Chang now spends half his time competing in Challenger series tournaments offering piddling purses. His most recent win was $7,200 at an April tournament in Calabasas and that was one of his biggest wins of the year. Another Challenger event in Tarzana a week later netted him $520.
Not that Chang needs the prize money to keep himself in tennis balls. His winnings since turning pro at the age of 15 total $18.9 million. And that's not counting an estimated $50 million in endorsements.

Q. Michael, in the second set, there was a point that you disputed or it looked like you were disputing that; actually went in your favor. When you were talking to the chair you were were you saying that, that actually the serve had been in or
MICHAEL CHANG: Talking about the last game?
Q. No, it was in the second set. It was you don't recall that one? MICHAEL CHANG: That was on set point for me, right.
Q. No, it was like at 5-5 and if Rafter had the point it would have gone 6-5 in the second set.
Q. Michael, can you comment on Patrick's game; what your thoughts are, how you saw him play, etc.?
MICHAEL CHANG: I think Patrick played some good tennis today, definitely. He served very well and he covered the net very well today. I think that I wasn't quite able to put as much pressure on him as I would have liked. I had a few opportunities on second serves, wasn't able to capitalize. I don't think I pushed him as hard from the backcourt than I would have liked to have. So all in all, I think he played a pretty good match.
Q. Can you see a lot of potential in him?

MODERATOR: Questions for Michael
Q. What happened in the tiebreaker with the Cyclops
MICHAEL CHANG: I hit a good serve. Apparently when I had hit a serve, the Cyclops from the Stadium Court went off. You know, Francisco I guess initially thought it was from his side. You know, by that time the point was already over. I was kind of looking over at him. He was kind of like, you know, "What's going on?" The umpire was, "That wasn't this Cyclops ." You know, I knew it was from behind me, but it's strange that it was fairly loud. That was the basic ruling. Had nothing to do with what was going on on our court. Q. Your serve was in? MICHAEL CHANG: It was in by like three feet. I mean, it wasn't really that close, unless there was a mouse running around in there. Q. Roger was in here talking about confidence. MICHAEL CHANG: Conflicts? Q. Confidence. Obviously, that's something that's plagued you pretty much up until

Who is Michael Chang? He is the first (and only) Asian tennis player to hit the top 10 world rankings. He was the youngest male ever to win a Grand Slam title the 1989 French Open at 17 years and 3 months, and the first American to lift the trophy since Tony Trabert in 1955. So why doesn't he get more media coverage? Stumped me there. Hopefully this tribute site has changed that. The Man MC includes tons of info gathered from sources worldwide that, until now, have remained trivia to many fans. The Change in Chang: Fight Is Missing, Psyche Fragile;
Tennis: He continues subpar play against Siemerink; Seles has off day in loss to Nagyova.; By: BILL DWYRE
TIMES SPORTS EDITOR
Monica Seles and Michael Chang, two of the top name players in pro tennis, left the premises Monday in the Evert Cup/Newsweek Champions Cup combined events. There was little similarity in their departures.
Seles, ranked No. 3 in the world and seeded No. 3 here, got beat on a bad day, losing to Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia, 6-2, 6-4.
"My mind wasn't there," said Seles, who made 27 unforced errors to Nagyova's 16 and, basically, just didn't show up for the match. It happens, and it happened to Seles on Monday.
Chang, on the other hand, went quietly, something of a trend of late and something that the former Michael Chang, the one that was ranked No. 2 in the world until mid-1997, never let happen.

Michael Chang:
The best parents are "selfless," says the tennis star. "My parents gave everything to us."
This week: Chang plays in the U.S. Clay Court Championships in Orlando, Fla., defending his No. 1 seed. ichael Chang is best known for wielding a mean tennis racket, but the superstar often puts it down for a fishing rod and time with his family. This day, Chang relaxes at a tiny fishing lake in Orange, Calif., with his brother, Carl. They are inseparable. "When we were growing up, family was everything," Michael, 26, explains as Carl, 30, casts a line. For a long time, his father, a chemist, fiercely managed Michael's career. In 1991, Carl took over. At first, as Michael sank in the rankings, some dismissed Carl as just a "chaperon." But the brothers, devout Christians, prayed together and stuck together. Now No. 10 in the world, Michael earned $12 million in 1997.

But I found it takes a lot more than physical size or strength to make it in life - both on and off the court. That's where I found having a relationship with God makes all the difference.
At 15 years of age, I was doing a lot of searching. I think at this particular age, kids are wondering about the meaning of life and are really trying to find themselves. I definitely had a lot of questions.
I became a Christian in 1988. My grandparents had given me a Bible that they asked me to read every day. On one particular evening when I didn’t have anything else to do, I decided to take a good look at it and see what it had to say. I found the Bible to be true and pure, expressing incredible love and peace through the life of Jesus Christ. Through my reading, I eventually accepted Jesus as my Lord and Saviour.
When I won the 1989 French Open—my first Grand Slam title—I was only 17. This came much earlier than my family and I ever dreamed. I never expected it, and I don’t think anyone else in the tennis world expected it either. But the Lord has His way of working things out.
