Winning Ways
by Michael Chang They said I was too small, that I didn't have the strength, that I wouldn't cut it. I'll admit it's been tough - really tough. Sometimes I still feel I just don't have the height or strength to go out and compete against the bigger guys. But I found it takes a lot more than physical size or strength to make it in life - both on and off the court. That's where I found having a relationship with God makes all the difference. At 15 years of age, I was doing a lot of searching. I think at this particular age, kids are wondering about the meaning of life and are really trying to find themselves. I definitely had a lot of questions.

Michael Chang Crashes Out in Tennis
American Chinese Michael Chang, who has been in flagging form recently, was crashed out of the Sydney Olympics when he lost to an unknown rival on Wednesday.
Canada
's Sebastien Lareau, ranked 125 in the world and only playing here on a wildcard, beat the American 16th-seed 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 in one hour and 31 minutes.
Chang displayed all his fighting qualities to come back from 5-1 down to force the first set into a tiebreak but he was unable to sustain the momentum. The defeat completes a dismal two days for the American men at the Olympics. Todd Martin and Vince Spadea both went out on Tuesday and Jeff Tarango is the only US player to have made the second round. Meanwhile, Britain's number one player Tim Henman got his dream of an Olympic singles medal shattered by Karol Kucera of Slovakia Wednesday. Kucera, a former top ten player who is emerging from a slump triggered by an injury last year, was in superb form from the baseline as he beat the British seventh seed 6-3, 6-2 to move into the second round.

Michael Chang
tennis player
Marital Status: single
Career Highlights: 1987: Became youngest male to win a U.S. Open match
1989: Became youngest player to win the French Open
1995: named by USA Today Weekend one of the five Most Caring Athletes
1997: Began the tennis season ranked No. 2
What He Says: "For me, it's important to do the work I've been called to do. A lot of people see me as a role model, and I want to portray a Christlike image. When people read the Bible and read it genuinely, they see that it expresses a lot of love. It's something I feel the people of the worldespecially the young kidsneed."
From the "New Man" magazine March/April 1998 issue Accepting His Responsibility Micheal Chang's faith and family continue to teach him wise lessons By Christin Ditchfield Whatever happened to role models, and do we really need them? Sooner or later the issue comes up in almost every interview and press conference. Reporters are sure to ask celebrity athletes how they feel about being a role model to the younger generation (especially after a headline grabbing scandal). Being a professional athlete has its benefits and rewards, but it also has its responsibilities! Too often, prominent sports figures have demanded that they be judged solely on their athletic achievements, insisting, "What I do in my private life is my own business!" But, inevitably, someone reminds them that youth are watching and patterning their lives after their sports heroes. While some athletes refuse the responsibility and some grudgingly accept it, tennis champion Michael Chang embraces it.

Love to Serve News February 15, 2000 For thirty-four years, American tennis players have crawled home from Paris every spring... in defeat. But in 1989 that all changed. In a match reminiscent of David's biblical encounter with Goliath, one small seventeen-year-old boy did what 494 of his countrymen before him had failed to do-capture the men's singles title at the French Open. Today Michael Chang's list of tennis achievements is breath-taking. He has earned many prestigious titles, most preceded by the phrase "youngest player ever to..." In a sport as demanding and publicized as professional tennis, Michael Chang stands out not only as an athlete of talent and determination, but also as a young man of integrity. At a glance, Michael does not seem to be the most formidable player on the professional circuit. Often matched against players well over 6 feet tall, Michael looks quite David-like at a mere 5'9''. The odds seem stacked against him from a human point of view, but God repeatedly uses Michael to remind the watching world that He gifts a player with more than just size and strength. "I don't have the height and I don't have the strength to go out and compete against the bigger and stronger guys. But I really think that I have been blessed with a talent and the speed to play tennis, and those are gifts from God."

Love to Serve News September 15, 1998 I have always read with interest Tennis articles that have a spiritual element to them. Two recent stories in Tennis Magazine caught my attention, an article in March, 1998 on Tim Mayotte (world #7), and Michael Chang’s Unfinished Journey article (May 1998) continues to encourage me. Tim is currently attending seminary in the US. It is great to see that a spiritual life is an area of interest to many who read this magazine. Many tennis professionals, coaches, and fans worldwide have a religious foundation of some kind. People are looking for answers to some of life’s basic questions, looking for happiness beyond what they have, and something that is practical for them. This is not a new idea for tennis. I am certain that this is just scratching the surface, however many top ranked players have had a committed Christian lifestyle or background. While I can not say exactly what a players current or former relationship is with Christ, I can say the following have publicly acknowledged a relationship with Christ.
  • In 1879 and 1880, the Pastor of a church, Rev. John Hartley of Great Britain won the Wimbledon men’s singles.
