Tennis Star Michael Chang’s Testimony 'Now Serving for the Match ... and for the Lord'
    Michael Chang, Professional Tennis Player
By Doug Greengard, AgapePress, April 17, 2001 (AgapePress) - At times, Michael Chang admits, tennis is not much fun. “But the Lord reminds me, He has it all in control and has a purpose for everything,” says Chang. To some, they may sound like just words. But for the former #2 player in the world, they are words to live by. These days, Chang is battling to get back to the top of the rankings where he reigned among the top ten in the world from 1992 to 1997. This year, amidst increasing frustration, he’s slipped to a disappointing 63rd in the rankings. “For me it’s a matter of going out and continuing to persevere at it,” Chang said. “And have the faith that when it’s all said and done, His will is done.” Success came early and often for Chang. In 1989, a year after he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and at just 16 years old, he became the youngest male to ever win the French Open. He burst onto the professional scene, earning the reputation as a player who always gave maximum effort and never gave up. Chang has never been one to rely on physical talent alone. At five-foot-eight and 150 pounds, the 27-year-old tour veteran knows his victory won’t come by overpowering or intimidating his opponents.

Home Soccer Football Tennis ... Michael Chang Michael Chang was just a kid when he first burst onto the pro tennis scene in 1987. He had been on the Tour for little more than a year when, at age 17, he stunned the tennis world by upsetting all-time greats like Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg on the way to his first Grand Slam titlethe 1989 French Open. His name was entered into the history books as the youngest player ever to win a Grand Slam event! Now, in his 10 years as a pro, he has reached the finals of three of the four Grand Slams (the Australian, the French, and the U.S. Open). He has captured over 30 tournament titles, earning more than $14 million in prize money. For seven years, he's been ranked as one of the top ten players in the world. On the tennis circuit his persistence and determination are nearly legendary. As Edberg has said, "Chang never gives up." Referring to his intensity and his amazing ability to get to "impossible" shots, one sportwriter called Michael "the most exciting player since Jimmy Connors." Another concluded, "Jim Courier speaks for all the pros when he says, 'You have to play your best tennis to beat him.'" One of the world's best players, Chang is committed to going out and giving his best every time he steps onto the court. And off the court, he goes out of his way to reach out to his fans and have a positive impact on their lives. He makes time to sign autographs and answers their questions; he participates in a variety of special charities, tennis clinics, and youth-oriented programs. He talks to children, reminding them to work hard in school.

Chang upset by unknown in challenger event
Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday July 17, 1999 10:43 PM AP APTOS, Calif. (AP) - Michael Chang, once ranked as high as No. 2 in the world, was stunned by 241st-ranked Harel Levy 6-4, 6-3 Saturday afternoon in the $50,000 Safeway Challenger. Chang was playing in his first tournament since the French Open nine weeks ago, in which he lost in the first round to Yevgeny Kafelnikov. He then missed Wimbledon and its associated warmup tournaments with a minor back strain. Levy, a 20-year-old who still serves in the Israeli Army when he's not touring, broke Chang's serve in the opening game of the match. He used a strong serve and powerful ground strokes to put the set away, then broke serve for a 4-3 lead in the second set. "Playing a guy like Chang, it's pretty exciting," Levy said. "I came in as the underdog with nothing to lose. I surprised myself at the beginning of the match when I was up 5-1. It went pretty easily then, but I knew it would be tough against a guy like Chang."

Michael Chang reflects on crowning moment
Click here for more on this story Posted: Saturday May 22, 1999 04:15 PM Michael Chang hopes to break out of his funk at the scene of his greatest triumph. Clive Brunskill/Allsport By John Donovan, CNN/SI ATLANTA It was just a flick of the wrist, really. An act of desperation. To some, it was utter impudence. Now, 10 years and a whole lot of tennis later, that simple shot, during the final agonizing minutes of a stunning fourth-round match in the 1989 French Open, lives as one of the most amazing single shots in tennis history. It may seem hard to fathom, but it has been a full decade now since Michael Chang, then a 130-pound 17-year-old upstart, put together a run of guile and guts on the tricky clay courts of Roland Garros to become the first American man in 34 years to win the French Open. Chang's victory over No. 1 Ivan Lendl in the '89 French Open Round of 16 was a five-set, four-hour, 37-minute labor filled with pain and suspense. His win over Stefan Edberg in the final, in another grueling five-setter, made him the youngest French Open champ and the youngest winner ever of a Grand Slam event.

The Homepage Update This is an updated homepage. Hopefully, with the advancement of fun graphics tools, I can get this page looking fancier in the future. Soon, there will even be a frames version. Oooooooh... :) For now (May, 1999), I'm settling for whatever comes out of this version. If you are nostalgic and want to see the old version for some crazy reason, it's here:
Looking for a Different Michael Chang? I f you're looking for Michael Chang, the tennis player, I'm not him (although I play tennis). Here's a good starting point for those of you not looking for me:
Actually Looking for ME I was born on December 8, 1976, in Detroit, Michigan. For the first year of my life, I resided happily in Sterling Heights. The big move came after my first year, and I have had my home in Troy, Michigan, ever since. I went to Costello Elementary on the east side of Troy. I haven't heard much from my childhood buddies from elementary school, so give me a hollar if any of you are still out there! :)

    57. Game, Set, Match--CHANG!
name. michael chang and tennis has been in my mind for as long asI can remember, and whenever I think tennis I think of Mike. I

Mike's the Man by Spencer Wong "Chang. (He) never gives up. He'll run down every ball. He never gets discouraged. And he has a lot of courage."
-Vince Spadea when asked who his toughest opponent is
My earliest recollection of Michael Chang was when he shot to fame in 1989. He beat Lendl in that unforgettable 4th round match at Roland Garros. This was when he had the cramps and all. But I don't remember any of that. All I heard was "Michael Chang, Michael Chang, Michael Chang" everywhere, everyday. I grew up in Flushing, New York. My team is the NY Mets, about a 10 minute drive from my house on 155th Street. Across from Shea, where the Mets play, is the US Open. So tennis was right in my backyard. I think I was in 5th grade when there was this Asian kid named Michael Chan. So I figured he and Mike Chang had the same name. Michael Chang and tennis has been in my mind for as long as I can remember, and whenever I think tennis I think of Mike. I guess I have known of Mike since he was 16 or 17 years old. That is a long time considering he is now a veteran at 28 years of age. Mike was the youngest man to win a match at a Grand Slam. I think he was 15 at that time. He then went on to become the youngest man to win a Grand Slam. Now back to that French. I know he beat Edberg. Stefan Edberg! I mean, c'mon, Edberg was the man! The best player on the planet at that time! Stefan Edberg = #1 and champion whenever I think of his name. He was, and still is, my idea of a quintessential tennis icon...tall, good looking, white guy in white playing shorts, fair skinned with blonde hair, graceful, athletic, all-around nice guy. I remember seeing him in a few commercials some years back and also when he retired (in 1997?). Seventeen-year old Mike beat this guy? Wow!
