Michael Chang Michael Chang charged onto the international tennis scene and shocked the world by upsetting Ivan Lendl and Stefan Egberg and becoming the youngest player in history to win a Grand Slam event. After that French Open win, he publicly thanked his savior, Jesus Christ. "Without Him, I'm nothing," he said. Boos and cheers followed. Criticism flowed freely. Veteran players and observers of the professional tennis tour laughed in anticipation of when Chang would fall.
None of it troubled Chang, who continues to stay focused on Christ and among the top tennis players in the world. Says Chang of his regular public praise of Christ: "I've just received so much joy, so much love, and so many blessings from the Lord. When something good happens to you, you want to share it with people!"
At just 5-feet-9, 150 pounds, the 1992 Olympian is small for his success. He says his keys to victory are intense physical and spiritual workouts. The spiritual is as important to tennis as the physical, and it is more important in life overall.
"I do a Bible study first thing in the morning and also at night," Chang says. "Throughout the day, I'll pray — whenever — because the Lord is always there. He teaches me a lot through circumstances in my life, whether it's a tennis match or other things that are going on. Trying to stay close to the Lord can be very difficult by yourself, so you ask the Lord to help you. You ask Him to be your first love and your first priority. Life will have its ups and downs, but regardless of what's happening in our lives, if we're focusing on Him, we'll have the joy that He gives us."

On November 10, 1996, the "Franklin Templeton Chang Challenge," a benefit exhibition between Michael Chang, the world's number two-ranked tennis player and John McEnroe, one of the sport's all-time greats, was held indoors at Cal's Harmon Gym with proceeds going to the Chang Family Scholarship. The event was a rematch of the inaugural 1994 event which funded 25 percent of the men's tennis scholarship endowment in the Chang family's name. Thanks to the active involvement of Franklin Templeton, Chang's sponsors, Prince and Reebok, several thousand Bear Backers filling Harmon Gym and a live national TV broadcast on Prime Sports, the 1996 "Franklin Templeton Chang Challenge" was one of the biggest events ever to hit Cal's athletic program generating an additional $130,000 in contributions to the endowment. Intelligence has been the cornerstone of Chang's success. Yet even if the pursuit of knowledge has brought Chang to the summit of professional tennis, equally important to the Chang family is their commitment to education.

He had been on the Tour for little more than a year when, at age 17, he stunned the tennis world by upsetting all-time greats like Ivan Lendl and Stefan Edberg on the way to his first Grand Slam titlethe 1989 French Open. His name was entered into the history books as the youngest player ever to win a Grand Slam event! Now, in his 10 years as a pro, he has reached the finals of three of the four Grand Slams (the Australian, the French, and the U.S. Open). He has captured over 30 tournament titles, earning more than $14 million in prize money. For seven years, he's been ranked as one of the top ten players in the world. On the tennis circuit his persistence and determination are nearly legendary. As Edberg has said, "Chang never gives up." Referring to his intensity and his amazing ability to get to "impossible" shots, one sportwriter called Michael "the most exciting player since Jimmy Connors." Another concluded, "Jim Courier speaks for all the pros when he says, 'You have to play your best tennis to beat him.'" One of the world's best players, Chang is committed to going out and giving his best every time he steps onto the court. And off the court, he goes out of his way to reach out to his fans and have a positive impact on their lives. He makes time to sign autographs and answers their questions; he participates in a variety of special charities, tennis clinics, and youth-oriented programs. He talks to children, reminding them to work hard in school.

Vahaly was down a match point in the breaker, yet found a way to win. Chang, who has a very storied career since turning pro in 1988, is currently ranked No. 123 in the world. Vahaly is ranked at No. 178 right now, and will likely move up. While it's the biggest win for Vahaly to date, even bigger than a win over Chris Woodruff last fall, it's just the latest in a trip around the world that has been exciting and challenging for the former Cavalier.

- Not far from the bright lights and big money of the Las Vegas strip, we caught up with a quiet and unassuming superstar of tennis. While the location and the subject might seem an odd contrast to most people, contrast is something Michael Chang has gotten used to. Just 5-feet, 9-inches tall, he's a modern-day David in a tennis world filled with Goliaths. "I don't play too many guys my height or even a little bit smaller," Michael explains. "You just don't see it these days. I mean, the average height of the top 100 players on tour is like 6'2"."

SPOTLIGHT: MICHAEL CHANG Ready for a new racket Ex-Henderson resident sets retirement after 16 years in pro tennis By JANIE McCAULEY
    THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Michael Chang, who won the 1989 French Open at age 17, will retire after this season, having won 34 pro tennis tournaments. ASSOCIATED PRESS FILE PHOTO Michael Chang's childhood rivals Andre Agassi and Pete Sampras still are winning Grand Slam tournaments late in their careers. Chang hasn't won a major since capturing the tennis world with his 1989 French Open victory at age 17 a big reason why he's decided to retire following this season, his 16th on the ATP Tour. His final event will be this year's U.S. Open. Chang kicks off his farewell tour in the Siebel Open starting Feb. 10 in San Jose, Calif., and he spoke about the decision to retire for the first time Friday. "It's been a great ride, and I still have the last part of the ride to go, and that's something I'm very excited about," said Chang, speaking from his home in Mercer Island, Wash. where he moved in 1998 after living and training in Henderson.

HONG KONG Sep. 23, 2002 Hong Kong Preview Safin, Moya and Ferrero all head East as they attempt to gain vital Race points. ATP Champions Race 2002 Update: With the Race to the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai heating up, three of the current Top 10 on the Leader Board are in action in Hong Kong this week. Top seed Marat Safin, the Russian who lies in third position, will be hoping to gain ground on Andre Agassi, the American who is 116 points ahead of him. Safin, looking for his first title of the year, does not have a best fifth result and so will automatically add to his current total of 438. Spanish duo Juan Carlos Ferrero and Carlos Moya also are in action. Currently tied alongside their fellow countryman Albert Costa in fifth position, Ferrero - whose best fifth is three points - could overtake Tim Henman in fourth position if he wins the title. Moya, whose best fifth is 15 points, needs to reach the final in order to add to his current total. 2001 Final: Marcelo Rios captured his second title of the year with a straight sets victory over Germany's Rainer Schuettler in the final. Rios, who won the title in Doha at the beginning of 2001, ended Schuettler's nine-match winning streak after he had won the title in Shanghai the previous week.

    Michael Chang
    Professional Tennis Player
At times, Michael Chang admits, tennis is not much fun. “But the Lord reminds me, he has it all in control and has a purpose for everything,” says Chang. To some, they may sound like just words. But for the former number two player in the world, they are words to live by. These days, Chang is battling to get back to the top of the rankings where he reigned among the top ten in the world from 1992 to 1997. This year, amidst increasing frustration, he’s slipped to a disappointing 63rd in the rankings. “For me it’s a matter of going out and continuing to persevere at it,” Chang said. “And have the faith that when it’s all said and done, His will is done.” Success came early and often for Chang. In 1989, a year after he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, and at just 16 years old, he became the youngest male to ever win the French Open. He burst onto the professional scene, earning the reputation as a player who always gave maximum effort and never gave up. Chang has never been one to rely on physical talent alone. At five foot eight and 150 pounds, the 27 year- old tour veteran knows his victory won’t come by overpowering or intimidating his opponents. “Phillipians 4:13 (I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me) is a special verse that I feel applies to me,” Chang said. “Knowing the Lord is with me, I’m able to accomplish things that people wouldn’t think I can do.”
