It was Wednesday, July 17, 2002, the second day of the Adidas Smash.
And then I caught sight of a figure playing on the far-side of the rightmost of the three courts. There was a certain familiarity in the posture and the movements. By the time I saw the winged forehand and that text-book backhand, there was no mistaking: I was beholding none other than Stefan Edberg. I thrusted $20 into the hand of the startled and uncomprehending waitress, and rushed off.
Yes, that Stefan Edberg. The Swedish tennis ace who retired in 1996, at the tender age of 30. Six-time Grand Slam champion. Holder of 42 singles and 19 doubles titles. Winner of over 20 million in prize money. Serve-and-volleyer the likes of which the world no longer sees. Namesake of the ATP Sportsman of the Year Award. And, a player who has been sorely missed.
And there he was, looking as if time had stood still since his retirement. Slender and poised as ever, Stefan, along with Jan-Michael Gambill, was playing pro-am tennis. Each was paired with an amateur in four successive sessions of doubles that was to last all morning. Dressed in loose-fitting tennis top and white shorts, Stefan could easily have passed for a college student. He was looking relaxed and happy, sliding on the green clay freely and laughing easily.
The amateurs who entered this event were not your ordinary tennis hacks, and some amazing exchanges were on display, with the lay players winning praises from their approving partners. At one point, Stefan dropped his racket to feign astonishment at a volley hit at an impossible angle by his partner. At another point, while waiting for the next session to begin, Edberg could be seen demonstrating his ball control prowess by bouncing a tennis ball on alternate sides of his racket, and then on the edge of the frame of the racquet. He is playing with Wilson Pro Staff racquets still, although the big W logo is absent from the racket face.

Stefan Edberg - snubbed by the Tennis Hall of Fame
by M. L. Liu

Word has come that "(Boris) Becker is the lone nominee in the Recent Player Category" on the 2003 Tennis Hall of Fame ballot. (See here This was rather startling news. I had long assumed that Stefan Edberg, who retired in 1996, would be a shoo-in for the nomination and induction, as soon as he became eligible, which happens to be this year. And I am not alone in making this bold assumption: Among Edberg fans there has been talks of making arrangements to attend the induction ceremony next year. And at an exhibition event held in Cape Cod this past July, Brett Haber the emcee introduced Edberg as a "future Hall of Famer." To be perfectly frank, I personally don't give a rat's care about Halls of Fame. I had never paid any attention to them, in any sport. And it didn't escape my attention that when Mats Wilander was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame this year, hardly anyone noticed. But the announcement that Becker rather than Edberg is this year's nominee is jarring, as it amounts to a slight on Stefan Edberg. And it is rather baffling. This is what is posted on the Hall's web site:

Stefan Edberg
As a demonstration event, the 1984 Los Angeles Games was restricted to players aged 21-and-under.Stefan Edberg justified his No. 3 seeding with victories over Ronald Agenor (HAI), Carlos Di Laura (PER) and Guy Forget (FRA) and then confounded critics by defeating hot favourite and top seed Jimmy Arias (USA) 62 61. In the bottom half of the draw, Australian Pat Cash, a Wimbledon semifinalist earlier in the year was ousted by Italy's Paolo Cane in the opening round while Jacob Hlasek (SUI) and Emilio Sanchez (ESP), seeded five and four respectively, were despatched by a young unseeded Mexican called Francisco Maciel. Maciel won through to the Final with a 62 60 win over Cane in the Semis. In withering 90-degree heat, Edberg easily won the first set from Maciel, and taking advantage of the Mexican's blistered feet was able to close out the second on a tiebreak to win Sweden's first ever Olympic gold medal 61 76. The impeccably mannered and chivalrous Swede said, "I was fighting in the tiebreaker because I love to play them although I had a little bit of luck when he fell over at 6-5 and then double faulted." Olympic gold was the first of Edberg's major successes in a long-standing tennis career which included six Grand Slam titles (two each at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and the US Open) and 35 additional singles titles. The Swede became the No. 1 player in the world in August 1990 and held the position for a total of 66 weeks over three spells. Edberg was a member of the successful Swedish Davis Cup team in 1984, 1985 and 1994 and he claimed two bronze medals at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. At the Barcelona Games in 1992, Edberg carried the Swedish flag in the opening ceremony.

Tim Henman's net game and forehand, compared to McEnroe and Edberg. Tim Henman: The Net Player's Objective
(roll mouse over photos for grips)
Before we peel back the digital layers and take a look at Tim's game, I believe I should stress one or two things. As with many of the articles, there's a certain amount of generalisation in what follows. But it is necessary for the sake of emphasis: best to point this out now, rather than keep apologising for such generalisations throughout the articles.
I shall also pose (and answer) questions myself, which hopefully won't make me certifiable.
You mean you'll be talking to yourself again?
Yes. And I'm going to start with the net player's objective.
And I'm supposed to ask what the net player's objective is?
Yes you are, so that I can now state that each individual tennis player has a certain type of game within, just waiting to be unearthed. Some players I could mention were obviously born to grind all day from the baseline, whereas the natural inclination of others is to get to the net and play react tennis . Tim Henman, like John McEnroe and Stefan Edberg, has a game which suits his personal strengths. In many cases, and to different degrees, a player's strengths tend to permeate the rest of their strokeplay.

Stefan Edberg: The Flat Backhand
Tennis coaching article on Stefan Edberg FRAME 1:
Coming from a country well known for turning out topspin baseliners in the mold of Bjorn Borg, who'd stay at the baseline all day to win a point, Stefan Edberg ran right against the Swedish grain in the 1990's: he didn't hit with much topspin, he was a net player of the highest caliber and he played with a classic one-handed backhand.
Left hand in control of the high backswing, the turn couldn't be much FULLER and the eyes are locked in on the ball. This is as good as it gets for what can be described as the classic, flat backhand.
The grip: Stefan's thumb is pretty much down the back of the racket grip, with a touch or it curling under FRAME 2:
Due to the bouncy characteristics of clay, low balls like this are more often found on indoor carpet and grass courts. Here, I'd guess that Stefan is facing slice or a volley.
bend your knees '. Juniors have been patronized with it in every club on the planet, but are rarely indulged with a reason why . Most important for a flat groundstroke is that it allows you to hit through . To understand this fully, consider the alternative: how would Stefan get to the low ball if he
