A review of the 1997 event with pictures.

1997 CHRIS EVERT PRO-CELEBRITY TOURNAMENT Calling all Palm Beach visitors and residents .. do we have an event for you! ! ... an absolutely fantastic weekend! The Chris Evert Pro-Celeb experience seems to get better and better each year. The 1997 charity event had a superb roster of professionals and celebrities ... packed with loads of excitement, laughter, glamour and the realization that it was all for a good cause. Can you believe ... President George Bush, Mike Wallace, Chuck Norris, Chevy Chase and a host of others all on hand for Chris Evert's special weekend? One of the stars on the court was Mary Howard, whose husband Allan is head of New York Life Insurance ... the sponsor for the afternoon activities. All we can say is .. if you have ever dreamt of playing tennis with the pros .. this is the chance to do it. We get photos of everyone...so each one present gets photos with Chris and the other celebs. We are tempted to say .. bright and early next day ... but in reality everyone likes to relax a little on weekend mornings so play begins at 11am on Saturday ... giving everyone plenty of time to arrive without any rushing....that is everyone but those of us who are working! This year the matches were held at the Boca Country Club. A special stadium court was constructed with plenty of seats for everyone .. all with great visibility. There were an ample number of vendors selling their wares and food and drink could be purchased. Again the National Anthem became a "happening". Chris held a contest during the year to select two people to sing the anthem at the opening of the matches on Saturday and Sunday prior to the start of play. We had been to the finals of this contest. There were 26 finalists ... and each one sang the anthem, on a tennis court, in front of a panel of 12 judges from the various South Florida publications ... and People Magazine! When you hear the anthem sung over and over again ... each time by magnificent voices with a great deal of emotion and feeling ... it is extremely moving. We do not know how the judges could make a decision. To us, they were all great.

CHRIS EVERT-PRO-CELEBRITY TENNIS TOURNAMENT
f you are in Palm Beach at the end of October, we know you will want to check out the big tennis charity event hosted and run by Chris Evert each year. Held the last weekend in October, Chris brings celebs to the area to play in her Chris Evert Pro-Celeb Tennis Tournament. Held in Boca Raton, it attracts crowds from all the surrounding areas.
As the photographers for Chris, we have often been asked to report on some of the details that do not show up in the local newspapers or in the advertisements. For starters, the weekend begins with an early press conference, usually held at Saks in Boca. Anyone present in the store at the time can watch the press conference as it progresses.
At this meeting Chris announces the draw for the event. Chris invites her guests, professional tennis players and other celebrities and she is the one who makes up the pairings for the matches. All matches played are doubles. It takes a lot of thinking for these pairings as she is looking for comfortable tennis playing partners, fun on the court, and clever comments.
There is no tournament, as such. Each group of four plays one set of 6 games. They all gloat when they win the match but there is no total at the end to declare an overall winner.

Evert, Chris
Chris Evert playing at Wimbledon, 1979 Tony Duffy/Allsport (1954- ), athlete Born on December 21, 1954, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Christine Marie Evert was the daughter of a noted tennis player. She early began taking tennis lessons from her father. Her style evolved rapidly to feature a powerful two-hand backhand and a degree of concentration that often unnerved opponents. At age 15, she beat top-ranked Margaret Smith Court, and in 1971 she became the youngest player to reach the semifinals of the U.S. championship. The following year she advanced to the semifinal round of her first Wimbledon tournament and won the Virginia Slims tournament. In December 1972 Evert turned professional; she won her first professional tournament in March 1973 and graduated from high school soon after. Victories in the 1974 French and Italian championships and at Wimbledon highlighted a remarkable 56-match winning streak. She retained her Italian and French titles in 1975 and won the first of four consecutive U.S. Open titles (1975-78). She was the first woman since Helen Hull Jacobs to do so. In 1976 she won her second Wimbledon title. Despite her occasional troubles on grass courts, she compiled one of the most spectacular records in tennis in clay court competition: as of April 1978 she was undefeated on clay in 118 matches in 24 tournaments. Following her marriage to tennis player John Lloyd in 1979 she adopted the name Evert Lloyd (the couple divorced in 1987). She added to her success with victories at the U.S. Open (1980, 1982), Wimbledon (1981), the Virginia Slims (1987), the French Open (1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, 1986), and the Australian Open (1982, 1984). She retired from professional tennis in 1989 and became a television commentator, a special advisor to the United States National Tennis Team, and president of the Women's Tennis Association (1982-91). She also founded Chris Evert Charities, which focuses primarily on drug and family problems.

Nicknamed "Little Miss Icicle" for her imperturbable demeanor, Evert lacked the flair of Billie Jean King or Martina Navratilova, but she was a very steady, consistent baseline player who won 157 tournaments, second only to Navratilova, and $8,896,195, third all-time, in just under 18 years as a professional. The daughter of tennis pro Jimmie Evert, who was ranked 11th in the U. S. in 1943, she turned professional on her eighteenth birthday in 1972 after having passed up $50,000 in winnings that year to retain her amateur status. Evert won her first major titles, the Wimbledon and French Open singles, in 1974. She also won at Wimbledon in 1976 and 1981 and was a finalist on five other occasions. Evert tied the record of Molla Mallory and Helen Jacobs by winning the U. S. Open four years in a row, from 1975 through 1978, and she won that title again in 1980 and 1982. She was a finalist at the French Open ten years in a row, from 1973 through 1982, and won the championship in 1974, 1975, 1979, 1980, 1983, 1985, and 1986. With her Australian Open titles in 1982 and 1984, Evert had a total of 18 grand slim singles championships, third behind Margaret Smith Court and Helen Wills Moody.

Chris Evert will provide expert analysis for the BBC
Chris Evert brings nearly two decades of playing success with her into the commentary box for the BBC this year. The American enjoyed a wonderful tennis career bringing in an incredible haul of 100 titles. Alongside Martina Navratilova, Evert dominated the women's game in the 1970s and 1980s, winning every Grand Slam more than once. Three times she was Wimbledon champion - in 1974, 1976 and 1981. As well as that, she won the French Open seven times, and the US Open six times. Even those impressive statistics do little justice to a player who won at least one Grand Slam a year for 13 years, and enjoyed a six-year unbeaten spell on clay winning 125 matches in succession. Evert's two-handed backhand, much imitated in the women's game was unfailingly accurate, and her concentration from the baseline impeccable.
