Who's in the news? The news in pictures Celebrities Actors and actresses ... This week's issue Steffi Graf During her 17 years as a professional tennis player, Steffi Graf won 22 grand slams, more than 100 WTA singles titles and an Olympic gold medal. As icy cool in her personal life as in her game, for years she had only had one focus: tennis. But now retired, she has found love, motherhood and married life with with fellow athlete Andre Agassi. It seems the tennis star who once said, "Nothing gives me those highs like playing tennis does," has found a new kind of happiness off the courts.
Stefanie Maria Graf was born on June 14, 1969, to Peter and Heidi Graf in Mannheim, Germany. Her father supported the family by selling cars and insurance and took up coaching tennis to earn some extra income. After Steffi revealed an interest in the game, Peter gave her a wooden racket and the two began hitting a ball around the living room. She progressed quickly, playing her first tournament aged five – it proved a frustrating experience, however, and she left the court in tears after being defeated.
Undiscouraged, Steffi went on to win the junior tournament the following year, displaying the determination that was to become her hallmark. Supremely talented, by the time she was eight she was committed to the sport, training with her father in the early hours of the morning before heading off to school.

Steffi Graf
Tennis made a welcome return to the Olympics as a demonstration sport at Los Angeles in 1984. Steffi Graf, aged 15 and Stefan Edberg, 18, won the gold medals in the singles events, and in doing so, became the youngest champions of the modern day Olympic tennis competition.
Graf made easy work of Etsuko Inoue (JPN), Anna-Maria Cecchini (ITA) and Pascale Paradis (FRA) on the way to her 1984 Olympic semifinal encounter with Raffaella Reggi where she despatched the Italian 76 64. In the other half of the draw, top seeded American Kathleen Horvath was ousted 62 76 in her quarterfinal match by Yugoslavia's Sabrina Goles. Goles then defeated Catherine Tanvier (FRA) to secure her place in the Final. Despite picking up a shoulder injury in the first set of the Final, Goles took it 61. But Graf displayed early signs of her whipped crosscourt forehand and heavily sliced backhand to take the second 63. At 3-3 in the third, Goles received treatment to her shoulder, which was now in spasm. From that moment on, Graf fed Goles an array of low balls to both sides and secured victory a few minutes later 16 63 64 in the gold medal match. Graf picked up the first of her 22 Grand Slam titles three years later in 1987 defeating Martina Navratilova in the Final at Roland Garros. The German claimed five more Roland Garros Championships including the final Grand Slam title of her career in 1999. She also won four Australian Open titles, was successful at the US Open five times and at Wimbledon seven times. The German's 1995 US Open win meant that, unique among men and women, she had won all four of the world's major titles at least four times. Graf's Olympic career finished with a second gold medal from 1988 Seoul where she defeated Gabriela Sabatini (ARG) 63 63 in the Final and she picked up a bronze medal in the doubles event of the same year partnering Claudia Kohde-Kilsch. The German claimed her last Olympic medal in at 1992 when Jennifer Capriati (USA) beat Graf 36 63 64.

1,75 m, 59 kg.

What a

Tennis: A disappointed Steffi Graf
falls by the wayside in probably
her last appearance in Wimbledon
By ROBIN FINN in Wimbeldon Her racquet hand turned limp as a noodle, her serve had no sting and the forehand she has always depended on to scare her challengers half silly went totally missing. Although it was cold and wet enough Friday to make her teeth chatter, panic had already set in and had the same effect. Steffi Graf (pic: right) , who has made a career of being an Iron Maiden on these lawns, was quaking. And across the net, the mercurial Natasha Zvereva seemed to have morphed Graf's legendary willpower and made it her own.
This was a double aberration. The fourth-seeded Graf, seven times a Wimbledon champion and 17 times the victor against Zvereva, had an attack of stage fright this gloomy Friday and could not recover. And Zvereva, five times a Wimbledon doubles champion but never again a Grand Slam singles finalist after Graf's pitiless 6-0, 6-0 annihilation of her in their 1988 French Open finale, kept her own composure from start to finish.
The 6-4, 7-5 victory for the 27-year-old Zvereva forwarded the pigtailed doubles specialist into the Round of 16 and stranded the 29-year-old Graf on the sideline. The German has been able to play just four tournaments since undergoing career-threatening knee surgery a year ago, and she had gone through feverish training and rehabilitation just to get herself fit for her favorite slam. The early-round setback put her back in a familiar spot: out of commission.

FRAME 1: Steffi Graf didn't often hit an attacking topspin backhand, preferring as she did to grind it out with an aggressive type of slice. However, this doesn't go to say she didn't have an attacking backhand and over the years I watched her hit thousands in practice, and I could count the ones she missed on my fingers.
The reason you didn't often see the above shot is because Steffi's movement was so swift and precise about the court, she would frequently run around (or bounce around , which is what it looked like) onto the backhand side and crack her more famous forehand. In this frame Steffi has been handed the perfect invitation to attack a groundstroke: a short ball. FRAME 2: The short ball is the perfect invitation to attack because the ball is already (almost immovably way out in front of your body, which, ultimately, makes it much easier to shift aggressively through, forward, into

In 1986, however, she won eight singles championships, including victories in tournament finals over the dominant players in women's tennis, Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. In 1987 Graf won 45 consecutive matches and captured 11 tournaments, including the French, Italian, and German opens and the Women's International Tennis Association's indoor and outdoor championships. MELBOURNE, Australia Serena Slam or Sister Slam no matter what you call it, Serena Williams is truly grand. Serena Williams won her first Australian Open title. It's a trophy her sister has never won. Williams survived an error-filled match to beat elder sister Venus 7-6 (4), 3-6, 6-4 Saturday to win the Australian Open for her fourth straight major championship. Serena added another Grand Slam title to the French Open, U.S. Open and Wimbledon crowns she won last year, all against her sister. After Venus slumped through four straight errors in the final game, the sisters met at the net to put their arms around each other's shoulders and whisper in each other's ears. While Serena blew kisses to the crowd, Venus applauded with her racket.
