French Open holder Carlos Moya hopes to reign at Gold Flake Open
French Open title-holder, Carlos Moya is one of the contenders at the Gold Flake Open to be held in Madras this April. For Moya, who has been ranked fourth in the world, this will mark his first trip to India. The 22-year-old from Majorca says he is looking forward to playing in India and will do some research for the trip. "I am going to talk to Bhupathi and Paes about it, but I have already been told many good things about the Gold Flake Open and it should be nice to play there," says Moya. "I've not eaten too many curries before, so I'll ask Leander and Mahesh about that too. I know it will be hot in Madras but that is okay for me because I like playing when it is hot. It is always good for us tennis players to go to countries that haven't seen us before. I hope that people in India will be happy about the way I play," Moya said. Moya was thrust into the limelight of professional tennis when he reached the final of the Australian Open in 1997. He became a name, a pin-up for young tennis players. He had the flashy looks and he had a game to match. It took no time for the international media to crown him "King Carlos." But if the Australian Open effort was impressive, it was in June 1998 that this mild-mannered player joined an elite club. Moya became a Grand Slam champion when he won the French Open, becoming only the third Spaniard in the Open-era of tennis to win on the city courts of Roland Garros.

Perhaps the most challenging week of Lleyton Hewitt's pro tennis career ended with fireworks and glory as the 21-year-old Australian captured Tennis Masters Cup 2002 Shanghai, successfully defending his title in the event as well as the world No. 1 ranking. Hewitt, in defeating Spaniard Juan Carlos Ferrero, 75 75 26 26 64 in 3 hours 52 minutes, became the first player to win back-to-back year-end championships since Pete Sampras in 1996 and 1997.
The title capped a dream scenario of Hewitt winning the men's year-end championship one week after his girlfriend, Kim Clijsters, won the women's year-end championship. Fittingly, Clijsters phoned Hewitt moments after the match while he was still on court to congratulate him on his success.
"It's been another very special week in my - not only tennis career, but in my life in general, I guess," said Hewitt, who won a Mercedes-Benz CLK 320 along with the tournament title. "My goal was coming here to get (the year-end No. 1 ranking), but once that sort of passed, then obviously I tried to put everything into regaining focus and desire and motivation to come out and win the Masters Cup and defend it again. It's not the easiest thing to do when you're playing against the other seven best players in the world."
About the only thing that could be said to have gone easily for Hewitt - if anything - during the past week was his retention of the year-end No. 1 ranking. He came to Shanghai 88 points ahead of ATP Champions Race No. 2 Andre Agassi. Three scenarios would have enabled Agassi, the 1999 year-end No. 1, to overtake Hewitt, but the moment Agassi lost his second round-robin match, ending any chance of advancing to the semifinals, Hewitt was assured of leaving Shanghai at least as the world No. 1 even though he had not yet clinched a semifinal berth himself - anything but!

Twelve clay court events have been played in 2002 thus far. In years past, Gustavo Kuerten, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Carlos Moya, and Marat Safin have been the power players on mud, winning the lion's share of titles, or advancing-with impressive consistency-to at least the semi's or finals of the most prestigious French tune-up events. That was the past.

By Chris Wright PARIS (AFP) - Temperamental second seed Andre Agassi slumped out to Spain's Carlos Moya in the quarter-finals at the Paris Masters here on Friday to hand Lleyton Hewitt a boost in the Aussie's quest to end the season as world number one. Top seed Hewitt blasted past Swiss eighth seed Roger Federer 6-4, 6-4 to give himself a 63-point lead on Agassi in the ATP Champions Race. Barring his route to Sunday's final is Thai sensation Paradorn Srichaphan, who won a battle of wits with US 12th seed Andy Roddick 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/3) to reach his first Masters Series semi final, having made the quarters at Madrid last month. The event he played before that, in Tokyo, he also reached the semis - beating a below par Hewitt on the way. Roddick's loss means he cannot qualify for the Masters Cup in Shanghai starting November 12, Czech Jiri Novak now taking the final slot on offer with Moya having bagged a berth courtesy of his win over Agassi. Hewitt said he was pleased with his showing. "I'm pretty happy to be through in straight sets," he said. "Even if I don't finish number one in a couple of weeks time I've still had a wounderful year," added the 21-year-old.

Carlos Moya of Spain crushed Australia n Lleyton Hewitt 6-4, 7-5 in by far the most spectacular clash at the season-ending tennis championship.
The last match on the second day of Shanghai Masters Cup saw the virtuoso performances of both players who fought a baseline battle, which sent Moya first into the semi-finals.
"It was really difficult. I am happy to win," said Moya, who occupied world top position for a stretch in 1999.
The match came to an exciting climax at the very end as Moya smashed Hewitt's backhand high ball, which, it was almost sure, would fall outside, wide out, squandering his third match point.
Having his back on the wall, 21-year-old Hewitt was desperate to prolong the tiebreaker but his effort turned out to be a failure as he hit a backhand too low into the net after three times of deuce, handing his opponent the victory.
Thus Moya reaped his fifth win over the Australian world number one, extending their head-to-head record to 5-3.
