"If I had to do it all over again, there's only one thing I would change. I would have come out a lot earlier." Tennis legend Martina Navratilova at the Human Rights Campaign dinner 9 October 1999 in Washington, D.C., USA The American tennis player was born 18th October 1956 in Prague, Czechoslovakia. She first visited the USA in 1973, defected in 1975, and became an American citizen in 1981. In 1978 she began a relationship with Rita Mae Brown (1944 - ), an American activist and writer, but the publicity made her resign as head of the Women's Tennis Association. She later had an affair with Judy Nelson and gained admiration by routinely climbing into the crowd at tennis matches to snog her lover after winning games. She stepped up her campaigning for lesbian and gay rights and spoke at the march on Washington DC in April 1993. She also filed a law suit against the enactment of the homophobic Amendment 2 in Colorado which bans legal protection for lesbians and gays in the fields of housing and employment. When she retired from singles in 1994 she had won 167 singles titles including a record nine at Wimbledon. Her victory in the 1995 Wimbledon mixed doubles extended her total of Wimbledon titles to 19, one short of Billie Jean King's record. In July 2000, aged 43, she returned to Wimbledon for the doubles, partnering Mariann de Swardt. They made it to the quarter finals, giving Venus and Serena Williams their toughest match. Martina has now been inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Introduction One of the world's most successful, colorful, and controversial athletes, Martina Navratilova was the Early Experiences Navratilova was born on October 18, 1956, in Prague, Czechoslovakia and was raised in the suburb of Revnice by her mother and stepfather. (Her birth father committed suicide when she was very young.) As a lean, athletic child, Navratilova excelled in many sports, including hockey and skiing. She thought nothing of competing against boys. "I'm not very psychologically oriented and I have no idea how I was affected by my real father's abandonment, the secrets and the suicide, or my feeling about being a misfit, a skinny little tomboy with short hair," she wrote in her autobiography, Martina.

Martina Navratilova bows out at Wimbledon
Martina Navratilova joins the BBC team for another year to give her insight into the ladies' final. Czech-born Navratilova was one of the greatest woman players ever. Between 1974 (when she defected to the USA and turned professional) and 1995, she notched up an incredible 56 Grand Slam titles - 18 singles, 31 doubles and 7 mixed doubles. Navratilova broke the mould - her physical fitness and aggressive serve-and-volley game had never been seen before in women's tennis. These attributes stood Martina in good stead on the grass courts of Wimbledon where she reached 12 singles finals and won a record nine times. Overall she won 19 titles at SW19 - only one short of the record set by Billie Jean King - and was world number one for a total of 331 weeks. Although she never won a calendar-year Grand Slam, her 1984 French Open victory meant that she held the four major titles in tennis at the same time.

Navratilova won the mixed doubles for the first time
Martina Navratilova has become the oldest player to win a Grand Slam title, partnering Leander Paes to mixed doubles glory at the Australian Open. It was the 46-year-old's 57th major title of her career and came 29 years after her first. This goes beyond any wildest dream
Martina Navratilova
She and doubles expert Paes defeated Todd Woodbridge of Australia and Greek Eleni Daniilidou 6-4 7-5. The Australian Open mixed doubles title was the only Grand Slam title which had previously eluded Navratilova in a career which began in 1973. As Woodbridge hit the net on match point after 97 minutes, Navratilova screamed "yes", raised her eyes to the heavens and embraced her Indian partner. Pictures of Navratilova's and Paes triumph The crowd gave her a standing ovation after she matched the feat of Australian Margaret Court who completed a sweep of titles at all the Slams in the 1960s before tennis turned professional.

Tennis Great Retires
by Beth Corbin
Martina Navratilova has been described as the greatest female athlete of this century. She is certainly one of the greatest athletes, female or male, of our time. And in November, she said farewell to singles play. As a player, Navratilova was bold and smart, and she dared to do things that others before and since could only imagine. She single-handedly reinvented women's tennis, taking the boundaries and limitations of women's tennis and shoving them higher and wider. As she entered New York's Madison Square Garden for the last match, more than 17,000 fans gave her a two-minute standing ovation while nearly 100 photographers captured the moment. Gabriela Sabatini won that final match, but Navratilova won a place in sports history. During her 21 years, Navratilova won 1,650 matches, 19 Grand Slam titles and 167 singles titles overall. As sports writer Tom Weir in a commentary for The Washington Post said, "Her 74-match winning streak ought to rank right alongside Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak. In 1982, her singles and doubles record was a combined 160- 7. Add up the regular-season victory totals of that year's champions from the World Series, Super Bowl and NBA Finals and they barely beat Navratilova, 162-160." During a special taped tribute to Navratilova at Madison Square Garden, friend and long-time tennis rival Chris Evert said, "She revolutionized the game. She brought a fresh new honesty. She's never been afraid to speak out or say what she really thinks. And she always wore her heart on her sleeve." Whether laughing or crying, falling to her knees in disappointment or joy, running, swinging or lunging for that impossible passing shot she (as if by magic) managed to return, Navratilova always gave the game her best.

MARTINA NAVRATILOVA
MODERATOR: Good evening. Martina Navratilova and Mariaan DeSwardt. Q. What was it like to walk out on those grass courts again? What was the feeling? MARTINA NAVRATILOVA: I've been on the grass for a couple weeks now. I haven't been on this club yet. It was nice, obviously. I'm glad we got to play. I'm glad we got to finish. I'm glad we got to win. We've had a bunch of matches interrupted so we've not been able to play like a three-set match in one day or one go. Always had interruptions, either rain, delay overnight twice. It's been sort of a stop-and-start run, uphill putt, so I'm glad we got to finish. All of a sudden we have to go on in 15 minutes, sort of scrambling, which is just as well, didn't have time to get nervous. Q. Any emotions attached to it when you walk out there? MARTINA NAVRATILOVA: Well, you know, again, of course. I'm been waiting for this for a couple months since Mariaan sacrificed herself and said she'd play doubles. MARIAAN DE SWARDT: I'd hardly call that sacrifice.

(I'm an older adult!) It's the best book written about Martina Navratilova. Breaking Point by Martina Navratilova, Elizabeth Nickles A tennis promoter's assistant plunges to her death at a gala reception in Paris. And Jordan Myles, women's tennis-champ-turned-sports-therapist, is convinced it was no accident. While searching for clues, she clashes with her old archrival Kelly Kendall, renegade agent Jimmy Bennett, and the in-your-face lesbian sports sensation Dagmar Olafson. But when someone tries to run Jordan off the road, she knows she's onto something more than sinisteras she faces off with a killer opponent in a game of sudden death. . . .
