Doubles Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski: Many things in common but very different For the second time since 1999, Tim Henman and Greg Rusedski
will represent Great Britain together in the World Team Championship at the Duesseldorf Rochusclub. Three years ago they won the round robin match 2-1 against Germany with Boris Becker, Tommy Haas, Nicolas Kiefer and David Prinosil and finished third in their group ahead of Germany. For the 2002 ARAG WORLD TEAM CUP Henman and Rusedski have higher ambitions: they want to try to improve the rather modest British record of just two wins at seven defeats in Duesseldorf.
At first sight, Henman, 27, and Rusedski, 28, have a lot of things in common. Both were born on September 6, Henman in 1974, Rusedski one years earlier. Both got married in December 1999, Henman on 11th , Rusedski one week earlier. Both wives are called Lucy, both pairs live in London’s classy district, Kensington. That, however, is all they have in common; Britain’s protagonists at the ARAG World Team Championship are as different as human beings can be.
Timothy Henry Henman was born in Oxford; he comes from an old aristocratic British family. And although the offspring with the cleanly parted black hair liked the very British sports football, cricket, rugby and golf (handicap 3) in his youth, he was destined to become a tennis professional right from his birth. Tim’s great grandmother Ellen Stanwell Brown was the first woman to play her serve overhead in Wimbledon in 1901. His grandfather Henry Billington, a courageous fighter-pilot of the Royal Air Force in World War II, made it into the third round in Wimbledon in 1948, 1950 and 1951, and Tim’s parents, Anthony and Jane, had a tennis court built on their estate on which their son hit his first balls when he was just two-and-a-half-years old.

HUTCHINSON ENCYCLOPEDIA Rusedski, Greg(ory) Canadian-born British tennis player. A left-hander renowned for his world record-breaking fast serves, in September 1997 he became the first Briton to reach a final of a Grand Slam men's singles tournament since Fred Perry in 1936, when he was runner-up to Patrick Rafter in the US Open. A month later Rusedski advanced to fourth place in the ATP world rankings, the highest position by a British male since the ranking system was introduced in 1973. In November 1998, he defeated the world number one, Pete Sampras , in straight sets in the final of the Mercedes Super 9 Paris Open to achieve the best win of his career. He was voted 1997 British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) Sports Personality of the Year, Player of the Year by the Lawn Tennis Association, and Sportsman of the Year by the British Sports Writers' Association. In 2000 he suffered recurring injuries that marred his performance. When he appointed Pat Cash as his coach, in the same year, he set about a total change of style in order to prevent any further injury. By March 2001, he had won ten career titles.
