serena williams biography - part 1 menu Serena Williams has become one of the most exciting and closely watched players in tennis. Alongside Venus, her older sister, she forms half of a prodigal tennis pairing that has been stealing headlines for all the right reasons. CLICK HERE TO BET ON WIMBLEDON 2002 Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on the 26th September, 1981, the youngest of 5 sisters. Richard and Oracene Williams raised their family in Compton, a violent Los Angeles suburb. Serena's father was very keen for his daughters to become professional tennis players, and so encouraged the young sisters to start playing from an early age. Her early training took place on Compton's public tennis courts, where despite the social problems, her skills quickly developed. Serena was four and a half when she entered her first tournament. Richard Williams claims that she then proceded to win 46 of the next 49 tournaments she entered as a junior. Even as a child she received national press coverage and promises of lucrative product-endorsement deals. In 1991 her father took the unusual decision to withdraw both Serena and Venus from tournaments, hoping to shield them from competitive and possibly racial problems.

    Serena Williams
Tennis player "She [Venus] was up there supporting me," Serena said. "After I lost my first two match points, I looked over to not my mom or dad, I saw them also, but I say Venus over there really making sure, pumping me up. It really helped me, so." Ranked 6th in the world among female tennis professionals by 1999, Serena Williams had become one of the sport's most exciting and closely watched young players. With her older sister Venus she formed half of a tennis-prodigy pair that had been making headlines from an early age. As an African American in a historically white- and European-dominated sport, she found herself in the spotlight and under scrutiny. Serena and Venus Williams were coached by their father Richard, an unorthodox career-builder whose methods stirred comment and controversy. Beyond the buzz, Serena Williams caught the attention of tennis fans simply because she was a player of extraordinary ability and dynamism. She has the potential to rise to the very top of the game. Father urges tennis Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on September 26, 1981, but she and her sister were raised in the economically depressed and often violence-riddled Los Angeles suburb of Compton. Her father Richard ran a private security firm, and her mother Oracene (who often uses the name Brandy) was a nurse. A fan of televised tennis, Richard Williams dreamed of the opportunities that might await his offspring-to-be: "I went to my wife and said, 'Let's have kids and make them tennis players,'" he told

Richard Williams: Venus And Serena's Father Whips The Pros And Makes His Family No.1 In Tennis. Author/s: Kevin Chappell Issue: June, 2000 NEARLY 15 years ago, an unknown father stood on a crumbling tennis court in Compton, Calif., and told his little daughter Venus that she was going to be one of the best tennis players in the world. This was a bold prediction, for the father was a neighborhood tennis coach and he knew that the odds of this happening were astronomical. After all, no Black person had dominated the game of tennis since Arthur Ashe won Wimbledon in 1975, and no Black woman had won a major tournament since Althea Gibson won the U.S. championships and Wimbledon in 1957 and 1958. But as it turned out, the father (aka Richard Williams) knew best. To the consternation of the tennis establishment and the delight of tennis fans, young Venus and her younger sister, Serena, climbed to the top of professional tennis. The journey was capped off last year by Serena's U.S. Open win, in which she beat No. 1-seeded Martina Hingis in straight sets.
