Notables: These super-close sisters make winning tennis matches a family affair. That may have to do with the way they were introduced to the game. Richard Williams taught all five of his daughters tennis at a young age (Venus was 4 and Serena started when she was 5). The family was living in Compton, CA and playing on the neighborhood courts of South Central Los Angeles. Venus and Serena took a special interest in tennis that their sisters didn't share and Richard Williams saw bright futures for his daughters. Venus, who at Wimbledon 1998 slammed a serve at 125 mph, was the first of the two to reach the U.S. Open finals in 1997. However, it was Serena who took the victory in 1999 to make her the first African American to win the Open since Althea Gibson in 1958. The sisters kept up their assault on the record books with the Sydney Summer Games. Venus won solo gold with her convincing solo run, and then teamed up with her sister to score gold in the doubles competition. The sisters won their 22nd straight match as a team in the most convincing Olympic doubles win ever.

http://www.who2.com/venuswilliams.html
VENUS WILLIAMS Tennis Player Williams dominated women's tennis in 2000, winning singles titles at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Sydney Olympics, and winning doubles titles at Wimbledon and Sydney with her younger sister Serena . (Her victory at Wimbledon made her the first black female champion there since Althea Gibson in 1957 and 1958.) Williams was already a famous figure in tennis for her size (6'1"), overpowering strength, splashy outfits and cornrowed hair, and unusual tennis background: she and Serena learned to play on public courts in tough Compton, California, coached by their self-taught father Richard. After her breakthrough 2000 campaign she was named Sportswoman of the Year by Sports Illustrated magazine. In September of 2001 she repeated as U.S. Open champion by defeating Serena in the finals.

In Urging Motorists to "Buckle Up"
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.—U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney E. Slater today welcomed tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams to a partnership with the U.S. Department of Transportation in efforts to persuade motorists to use seat belts and unveiled new "Buckle Up America!" television and radio public service announcements (PSA) featuring the Williams sisters. "The Williams sisters are among the most powerful voices in popular culture today and can have a great positive impact on people, influencing them to make responsible choices," Secretary Slater said. "I welcome this support from Venus and Serena and their parents in promoting seat belts and improved safety, which is President Clinton’s and Vice President Gores’s highest transportation priority." The new "Williams Family: Tennis is A Game, Your Life is Not, Buckle Up" television and radio PSAs are part of a comprehensive public education campaign by the department’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and its partners. In addition to PSAs, the Buckle Up America! campaign also will receive photos of the Williams sisters for public education efforts such as posters, exhibit boards, brochures and other promotional material.

Place of birth: Lynwood, California Venus Williams (United States) - tennis
Seemed destined for stardom from the moment she began playing tennis at the age of four and a half. Stunned the game at the age of 17 when she became the first woman in 19 years to reach the U.S. Open final on her debut at Flushing Meadows. Won the WTA Tour's Most Impressive Newcomer Award at the end of that year and broke into the top 10 for the first time in 1998, rocketing up 100 places from her 1997 ranking. Won six singles titles in 1999 before a spectacular season in 2000 when she clinched her first Grand Slam title at Wimbledon and went on an astonishing 35-match winning streak, picking up the U.S. Open trophy in the process. The Olympic title followed in Sydney as Venus brushed aside all challengers on grass and hardcourt.
A slow start to the 2001 season, punctuated by injury and a lack of match practice, was quickly forgotten as Williams shrugged aside a first-round exit at the French Open to defend successfully her Wimbledon crown. Eliminated compatriot Lindsay Davenport in the semi-finals before crushing Justine Henin, Jennifer Capriati's conqueror, in the final. Went on to beat her sister Serena in the final of the U.S. Open, the first time that sisters had met in a Grand Slam final since 1884, as Venus became only the sixth woman to win both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open inconsecutive years. Further 2001 titles followed in Miami, Hamburg, San Diego and New Haven as Venus confirmed her status as arguably the best player in the world.

http://www.yaleherald.com/archive/xxviii/1999.09.03/sports/p22pilotpen.html
Without Venus, tennis center desolate as Pluto
By Laurie Randell COURTESY PILOT PEN INCORPORATED Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Daveport, 6-2, 7-5, in the finals of the Pilot Pen Tournament. Thousands of tennis fans filled the food court and sponsor tents, eliminated players watched from the stands, and television personalities broadcasted from the press booths as a perfect day of tennis unfolded at the Pilot Pen tennis tournament. But after the grueling final between Venus Williams and Lindsay Davenport was over and Williams was crowned champion, when all the big names and satellite trucks were gone, the stadium stood empty, just as it does for 51 weeks out of the year. This year's draw boasted some of the biggest names in women's tennis, including Davenport, Williams, Monica Seles and Steffi Graf. Williams dominated, cruising through the week without losing a single set. The presence star players in the tournament had an impact in many areas, as evidenced by recent increased attendance and the comprehensive national television coverage provided by ESPN, ESPN2 and CBS Sports. The extra attention paid by the national media to Pilot Pen highlighted one of the problems of the Tennis Center. Among many of the spectators who came out to support one of New Haven's biggest professional sporting events, there was a sense of confusion. The organizers of the Pilot Pen did manage to wring the maximum potential out of the facilities at the Tennis Center, showing that the multimillion dollar facility was fully capable of hosting international sporting events. However, once the final prize check was awarded and the last speech was made, the Tennis Center reverted back to its day job: a very pretty stadium to look at, but one that is rarely touched. With the exception of the weeklong Pilot Pen, the Tennis Center lies fallow all year with not a single match played within its confines.

It may come as a surprise but Britain had a woman player in the top 10 at the start of yesterday's play, dovetailed somewhat incongruously between the Williams sisters, Venus and Serena. Elena Baltacha may have lost in the first round, but her serve of 118mph against Nathalie Dechy on centre court was the second-fastest recorded by a woman at these championships. A small and perhaps insignificant thing, but then three or four years ago Belgium could never have imagined it would have two of the world's leading players.

As half of the amazing Williams tennis tandem, Venus brings grace and raw athleticism to the court, not to mention a dominating game. why is she famous? Venus burst into women's tennis in the early '90s and sent fans home amazed by her speed and incredible strength. The pure talent she possesses has led her to four Grand Slam victories and a seat alongside sister Serena atop her sport, as the No. 2 female tennis player in the world. overall rating It is not often we come across a story and set of accomplishments quite like those of Venus Williams. As the elder of the famed sisters, she was the first to break into the Women's Tennis Association tour and be recognized as a legitimate threat to dethrone any No. 1 seed who opposed her. Barely into adulthood, Venus was already defeating past champions with her incredible serves and consistent strokes. Her supremacy over the sport, however, would probably not remain as noteworthy were it not for Serena. The two of them combined have emerged head and shoulders above any other competitor. They are simply stronger and faster than all other opponents and have a stronghold on the number one and two spots in the rankings, in an unprecedented family sweep. We have seen Tiger Woods become the best golf player ever, but imagine if he had a brother that was nipping at his heels during the final round of every tournament.
