EXCERPTED FROM A READER'S TREASURY Abbott, Edwin: Flatland Evolution of Consciousness Published by Dover Publications in 1952 This is Abbott's classic book about the nature of Lineland, Flatland, and Spaceland. I first encountered it while in college and its concepts were mind-boggling. Abbott's imagination led me into worlds of thought about two, three, and four dimensional worlds. By describing how a society might be structured in two dimensions, he brings the reader to imagine how constrained such a world would appear to a being who lived in three dimensions as we do. In the introduction to the Second Edition in 1884, Abbott engages our imagination right away: Suppose a person of the Fourth Dimension, condescending to visit you, were to say, "Whenever you open your eyes, you see a Plane (which is of Two Dimensions) and you infer a Solid (which is of Three); but in reality you also see (although you do not recognize) a Fourth Dimension, which is not colour nor brightness nor anything of the kind, but a true Dimension, although I cannot point to you its direction, nor can you possibly measure it." What would you say to such a visitor? Would not you have him locked up? Well, that is my fate: and it is as natural for us Flatlanders to lock up a Square for preaching the Third Dimension, as it is for you Spacelanders to lock up a Cube for preaching the Fourth.

Original limp card boards, covered in printed vellumized paper. An usually well preserved copy, of a notoriously fragile book. Published in the same year as the first edition. Edwin A. Abbott (1838-1926) was born in London, the son of the Headmaster of the Philological School, Marylebone. After a successful career at St. John's College, Cambridge, he married and became a minister. In 1864 he was elected Head Master of the City of London School, and served brilliantly for twenty-five years. It was due to his influence, that the study of great English Literature became an integral part of educational programs. He was one of the greatest teachers of his era. He became well known as a Bacon scholar, and occasionally became embroiled in the Shakespeare-Bacon controversy. It is interesting to note that the fine article on Abbott in the DNB does not even mention 'Flatland' - perhaps because it was both pseudonymous and most unusual, and thus somewhat inconvenient to associate with its author. Not incidentally, 'Flatland' is also full of humorous satires on class, bureaucracy, and society in Victorian England. In recent years, Abbott's witty view of class conflict and women's roles in society have gotten much attention - especially interesting are his descriptions of women's language versus men's language.

I've read many disturbing books on the depravity of mankind, books such as Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness and Paul's Epistle to the Romans . Square in 1884, Flatland is one of those rare and valuable tales of simple presentation and profound impact. It is the testimony of the character A. Square who is, literally, a four-sided geometrical figure. His world is Flatland, a world of only two dimensions and populated by a working society of conscious, intelligent geometrical plain figures.
