Chicano activist Oscar 'Zeta' Acosta was the inspiration for Hunter Thompson's hell-raising buddy in 'Las Vegas,' but his true legacy remains in the shadows.
Oscar "Zeta" Acostaan outrageous lawyer who once subpoenaed every member of the Los Angeles County grand jury to prove a pattern of discrimination against Mexican Americansis somewhat of a Chicano folk legend.
He was a driven, hell-raising attorney who was involved in high-profile civil rights cases in Los Angeles in the late 1960s and early '70s and inspired the character of Dr. Gonzo in Hunter S. Thompson's surreal book "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas."
Acosta eventually gave up law and wrote two semi-autobiographical books, and then disappeared like a puff of smoke off the coast of Mazatlan, Mexico, in the spring of 1974. But not before leaving an indelible mark on the pages of L.A. political history and Chicano literature.
His disappearance took place three years after the notorious drug-enhanced trip to Las Vegas that is the subject of Thompson's book and the current Terry Gilliam movie starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro.

The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, Oscar Zeta Acosta Borderlands/ La Frontera The House on Mango Street Sandra Cisneros Days of Obligation , Richard Rodriguez New World Border Always Running , Luis J. Rodriguez Copy Packet Course Description In this course we will be examining the development of Chicano/Chicana identity, as it has been voiced in the latter half of the twentieth century. Though we will examine the development of the Chicano in representations as early as Cabeza de Vaca’s 1542 colonial narrative The Account , our primary focus will be on literature written after the 1960s and the rise of Chicanismo as a defiant social consciousness in the United States. We will be looking at the different ways that writers have used evocations of the land, language, history, and culture to define a distinctive Chicano identity. Along the way we will be exploring questions and controversies that have surrounded the term "Chicano." What, if anything, for example distinguishes the Chicano from the Mexican-American? How does Chicano culture and identity intersect or contrast with other Latino identities in the United States? Do questions of gender or sexuality complicate or suggest alternatives to a standardized notion of what it means to be Chicano or Chicana? In addition to the texts, we will be examining other cultural worksfilms such as

Correction Re-Saturday Review of Literature Oscar Acosta disappeared in Mexico in 1974, not 1971 (the year of his trip to Las Vegas with Dr. Thompson). First Impressions This is the most realistic book I have ever seen about Mexican American hippies in Aztlan, the Chicanos of the 1960's neo-freedom movements. It will surely become a collector's item worth saving in this era of gung-ho Americanism which does not know the kind of objectivity Acosta displays with regard to how we think and why we believe as we do. Hunter S. Thompson described the author better than I can in his introduction to the book, highlighting his uniqueness while lamenting his untimely passing. I will write more after I give the book a more thorough second reading. You Also Might Like...

Media: Paperback Publisher: Vintage Books Salesrank: Release Date: July, 1989 Author: Oscar Zeta Acosta Customer Reviews: (Provided by Amazon.com) Good saga from a good writer I heard about Oscar'Zeta' Acosta basically from reading Hunter S. Thompson's book but became quickly fascinated by Dr. Gonzo and wanted to know more about him. I was pleased to find out he had also written some books and was even more pleased to find out he was(is?) a very good writer. Truly an inspiration to anyone who has ever felt their identity as an american is something that they have had to come to grips with. Apart from that serious subtext, it also a very entertaining and amusing story that rolls along, introducing some interesting and memorable characters and situations. A passionate human being wrote this book and it is filled with all the honesty and humanity of someone bearing his soul to achieve a greater sense of genuine self which for Oscar Acosta means being "A Brown Buffalo" Finding Gonzo To finally learn who the inspriation behind H.S. Thompson's Gonzo attorney was a treat. This book is a must read for anyone who desired the guts to quit their job and hit the road and discover life on the 'other' side of life. Every American should graze where the Buffalo once roamed.

Whereas many of the early Chicano/a writers of the seventies emphasize ethnicity at the expense of other subjectivities, later Chicano/a authors create more complex relation- ships within the identity politics of the eighties and nineties. Three writers, Oscar Zeta Acosta, Arturo Islas, and Michael Nava, represent different literary generations of Chicano/a authors whose fictions span the range: from emphasizing ethnic awareness at the expense of sexual dignity to affirming the intersection of ethnicity and sexuality.
