ABSTRACTS (Por orden de programa) Martes 21 Jueves 23 Martes 21 12:30 Aula 2 1. Solórzano, Noemy. Cornell University. "El Laberinto de la Pochedad: Travel Narratives by Richard Rodríguez and Rubén Martínez"
In this paper, I examine two Chicano narratives about traveling to Mexico: Richard Rodríguez's "Days of Obligation: An Argument with My Mexican Father" (1992) and Rubén Martínez's "The Other Side: Notes from the New L.A., Mexico City, and Beyond" (1993). Both these books are not about specific trips to Mexico, instead they are about each author's journey from their native California into Mexico. In a sense, these two narratives are about the Mexican-American quest for a home and identity. I discuss how these two authors construct what it means to be Mexican by reconciling their pre-conceived notions with what they chose to observe and experience in Mexico. Both authors localize the heart of lo mexicano in the bodies and actions of lower class Mexican men, but fail to connect with these men.
In "Border Matters", José David Saldívar situates these two books as travel narratives that problematize the inherent colonial relationships that comprise this particular literary genre. While Saldívar is interested in the way these books portray the city of Tijuana, I am interested in exploring how these two writers filter their experiences in Mexico through their pre-conceived notions about what it means to be a Mexican man. Richard Rodríguez's book is a metaphorical search for the Mexican father that will permit the son entrance into the realm of Mexicanness. Martínez is interested in claiming his Mexican roots also through the figure of his Mexican father (Martínez's mother is of Salvadorian origin). Both writers, however, conclude that their true identity rests in Latino California, where new forms of Mexicanness are elaborated.

Postethnic Narrative Criticism
Magicorealism in Oscar 'Zeta' Acosta, Anna Castillo, Julie Dash, Hanif Kureishi, and Salman Rushdie By Frederick Luis Aldama "In this exciting new book, Frederick Luis Aldama has done an outstanding job of remapping 'magical realism.'"
Magical realism has become almost synonymous with Latin American fiction, but this way of representing the layered and often contradictory reality of the topsy-turvy, late-capitalist, globalizing world finds equally vivid expression in U.S. multiethnic and British postcolonial literature and film. Writers and filmmakers such as Oscar "Zeta" Acosta, Ana Castillo, Julie Dash, Hanif Kureishi, and Salman Rushdie have made brilliant use of magical realism to articulate the trauma of dislocation and the legacies of colonialism that people of color experience in the postcolonial, multiethnic world. So Far from God, Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo, and Daughters of the Dust, Sammy and Rosie Get Laid.
