In the beginning, Douglas Adams wrote a radio script for "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy". This made a lot of people angry, and has been widely regarded as a bad move, especially after Inland Revenue decided he wasn't paying them enough money. The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
One Thursday lunchtime the Earth is unexpectedly demolished to make way for a new hyperspace bypass. For Arthur Dent, who has only just had his house demolished that morning, this seems already to be more than he can cope with. Sadly, however, the weekend has only just begun, and the galaxy is a very strange and startling place.

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Facing annihilation at the hands of the warlike Vogons is a curious time to have a cosmically displaced Arthur Dent and his curious comrades in arms as they hurtle through space powered by pure improbability - and desperately in search of a place to eat.

'Hitchhiker' author Adams dies
LONDON, England Douglas Adams, author of the cult science-fiction comedy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, has died at the age of 49. British-born Adams died on Friday of a heart attack in Santa Barbara, California, his London spokeswoman Sophie Astin said. He was married with a daughter. The guide, published in 1979, was a satirical adventure about a group of intergalactic travellers. It opens with the Earth being destroyed to make way for an intergalactic highway. It went on to sell more than 14 million copies worldwide and was turned into a BBC radio serial and later a TV series. The book preceded a series of best-selling titles by the author, including The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe; Life, The Universe And Everything; and So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish. The books blended satire, memorably named characters such as Zaphod Beeblebrox and Marvin the Paranoid Android and witty philosophy, at one point supplying the answer to "the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything." The answer was 42.

FOREWORD Buy "Don't Panic" by Neil Gaiman. It is the best guide to 'The Guide' that is around. Relevant details are : (See section 7.2, Translations, for the German edition of Don't Panic) This is the list of frequently asked questions (and their answers) for the newsgroup alt.fan.douglas-adams. There is biographical information about Douglas Adams, answers to the frequently asked questions that plague the group, interesting notes and tidbits that you may not have known, and anything else that I and readers of the group have found interesting. This FAQ is possible only through the support of the DNA fans around the world, mostly but not limited to the readers of alt.fan.douglas-adams. Without their help, this document would be pretty skimpy indeed. I wish I could maintain the names and originators of all the information found in this document, but that is nearly impossible. So accept this global thanks to all the contributors. And special thanks to Evan Macbeth (Paradox !-) ) for keeping me on track and up to date on EVERYTHING. As usual, any info you think pertinant, interesting, enjoyable, etc. that you think deserves a spot in this FAQ, send along to nhughes@umich.edu. I love reading the mail, even if I can't include your particular piece. Where possible, pointers to existing information (such as books, magazine articles, and ftp sites) are included here, rather than rehashing that information again. Information is provided without guarantee if you get stung using any of the information provided here, or send off your personal fortune and are stuck, then I accept no blame or responsibility. It's your own damn fault.

I thought that since alt.fan.pratchett has a quotes directory, alt.tv.red-dwarf also has a quotes directory, why not alt.fan.douglas- adams? So, I locked myself away for a few days (pizzas slid under the door so I wouldn't starve) and set to it. I decided to leave out the Liff books since they are basically quotes in themselves and copying them here didn't seem right somehow. You'll notice that some books have very few quotes here. This isn't because the books aren't funny (except, perhaps, in the case of SLATFATF), it's because in later books DNA specialized in the throwaway line which aren't funny on their own, but are when you've read the previous two pages. If any of your favourite quotes are missing, mail them to me and I'll put 'em in. Enjoy...

Douglas Adams is the creator of all the various contradictory manifestations of The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which include a radio series, a tv series, a stage play, record albums, a computer game, a series of internationally best-selling books, a set of graphic novels and, apotheotically, a bath towel. In a long and varied career Douglas has also written the Dirk Gently novels, a non-fiction book (Last Chance to See) on endangered species, worked as a chicken shed cleaner, a bodyguard for an Arab royal family, and played guitar for Pink Floyd. Douglas is a founding partner and the Chief Fantasist of The Digital Village "Being part of The Digital Village lets me get back to where I once belonged. When I started out I worked in radio, I worked in TV, I worked on stage... I enjoyed experimenting with different media, working with people and, wherever possible, fiddling with bits of equipment. Then I accidentally wrote a best-selling novel and the consequence was that I had to write another and then another. After a decade or so of this I became a little crazed at the thought of spending an entire working life sitting in a room by myself typing. I needed to do a bit of crop rotation. Hence The Digital Village. "My main role at the Village is to create new projects, to move from one medium to another, to think strategically about new media and to fiddle with bits of equipment."
