Appleton's Cyclopedia of American Biography, edited by James Grant Wilson and John Fiske. 6 vols. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1887-1889 was the "most-quoted" biographical source for 19th and early 20th America. Appleton's, due to its age, reflects the bias and prejudice of late 19th Century America. It is also estimated that 100 to 200 of the 35,000 biographies are entirely fictitious. Additionally, the OCR technology used to transfer the text to the web was, at best, only a 99% accurate. ADAMS, HENRY
ADAMS—AD AMSON These epistles show him to have been on the most friendly terms with some of the foremost men in state and church, though his ardent protestantism offended Laud and hindered his preferment. His " occasionally" printed sermons, when collected in 1629, placed him beyond all comparison in the van of the preachers of England, and had something to do with shaping John Bunyan. He equals Jeremy Taylor in brilliance of fancies, and Thomas Fuller in wit. Robert Southey calls him " the prose Shakespeare of Puritan theologians." His numerous works display great learning, classical and patristic, and are unique in their abundance of stories, anecdotes, aphorisms and puns. His works were edited in J. P. Nichol's Puritan Divines, by J. Angus and T. Smith (3 vols. 8vo, 1862). See England's Earliest Intercourse with Japan, by C. VV. Hillary (1905); Letters written by the English Residents in Japan, ed. by N. Murakami (1900, containing Adams's Letters reprinted from Memorials of the Empire of Japan, ed. by T. Rundall, Hakluyt Society, 1850); Diary of Richard Cocks, with preface by N. Murakami (1899, reprinted from the Hakluyt Society ed. 1883); R. Hildreth's Japan (1855); J. Harris's Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca (1764), i. 856; Voyage of John Saris, ed. by Sir E. M. Satow (Hakluyt Society, 1900); Asiatic Society of Japan Transactions, xxvi. (sec. 1898) pp. I and 194, where four more hitherto unpublished letters of Adams are given; Collection of State Papers; East Indies, China and Japan. The MS. of his logs written during his voyages to Siam and China is in the Bodleian Library at Oxford.

Chaos often breeds life, when order breeds habit. Philosophy: unintelligible answers to insoluble problems. No man means all he says, and yet very few say all they mean, for words are slippery and thought is viscous. American society is a sort of flat, fresh-water pond which absorbs silently, without reaction, anything which is thrown into it.

Adams, Henry 1838-1918, American writer and historian, b. Boston; son of Charles Francis Adams (1807-86). He was secretary (1861-68) to his father, then U.S. minister to Great Britain. Upon his return to the United States, having already abandoned the law and seeing no opportunity in the traditional Adams vocation of politics, he briefly pursued journalism. He reluctantly accepted (1870) an offer to teach medieval history at Harvard, but nonetheless stayed on seven years and also edited (1870-76) the North American Review. In 1877 Adams moved to Washington, D.C., his home thereafter. He wrote a good biography of Albert Gallatin (1879), a less satisfactory one of John Randolph Democracy (1880), a cutting satire on politics, and Esther (1884). His exhaustive study of the administrations of Jefferson and Madison, History of the United States of America (9 vol., 1889-91; reprinted in a number of editions), is one of the major achievements of American historical writing. Famous for its style, it is deficient, perhaps, in understanding the basic economic forces at work, but the first six chapters constitute one of the best social surveys of any period in U.S. history. Never of a sanguine temperament, Adams became even more pessimistic after the suicide (1885) of his adored wife. He abandoned American history and began a series of restless journeys, physical and mental, in an effort to achieve a basic philosophy of history. Drawing upon the physical sciences for guidance and influenced by his brother, Brooks

After Marian Adams committed suicide in December 1886, the widower became a compulsive traveler. Having been to Japan and Cuba, and on a swing of the American Far West, Henry embarked, in 1890, in San Francisco on an eighteen-month journey across the globe, to Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Fiji, Australia, Java, Ceylon, Aden, Paris, London, and back to Washington. He could claim, had he been inclined to do so other than tacitly, that he had seen all five continents and more of the United States than almost anybody else. (From NBC.com) Jonathan Adams is too young to remember anything about the chaotic 1960s from first-hand experience but as he prepares to play an African-American electronics store salesman and father who witnesses the social upheaval in NBC’s nostalgic “American Dreams,” he can relate to the resulting changes wrought from those years. “By the time I got to grade school in the early 1970s, I noticed that the newer history books had larger and larger pictures than before of the patriot Crispus Attucks, who died in the Boston Massacre,” says Adams. “I benefited from the history of the 1960s because I saw the historical accounts and learned of contributions of African-Americans during that time. I know we will try to do them justice in our series.” Adams was born and raised in Pittsburgh as the youngest of five children. Their father was a warehouse foreman for General Electric and their late mother worked for the county health department. He discovered at 16 that “acting was the only thing that gave me joy,” so after performing in high school productions, Adams enrolled in his hometown’s Carnegie-Mellon University to study theater. When he ran out of cash for his education after 18 months, Adams sought work in Pittsburgh’s live theater and eventually was cast in playwright Arthur Miller’s “Danger: Memory.” After appearing in additional stage work, he co-starred in the locally filmed and low-budget feature “Two Evil Eyes.”
