Addison "God raised up Mr. Addison and his associates to lash the prevailing vices and ridiculous and profane customs of this country, and to show the excellence of Christ and Christian institutions." To win such praise from John Wesley, Joseph Addison must have exerted a great influence indeed.

Joseph Addison
Born: May 1, 1672, Milston (near Amesbury), Wiltshire, England. Died: June 17, 1719, Holland House, Kensington, England. Buried: Westminster Abbey, London, England. Son of Lancelot Addison, sometime Dean of Lichfield and author of Devotional Poems , Joseph attended the Charterhouse, and Magdalen College, Oxford (B.A. 1691, M.A. 1693). Although intended for the Church, he studied law and politics, and soon attained, through powerful influence, some important posts. He was successively a Commissioner of Appeals, Under Secretary of State, Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, and Chief Secretary for Ireland. He married the Dowager Countess of Warwick in 1716. Addison is best known for his contributions to the newspapers The Spectator (where his hymns appeared), The Tatler The Guardian , and The Freeholder . He also wrote the tragedy Cato Hymns:

Addison, Joseph Addison, Joseph, , English essayist, poet, and statesman. He was educated at Charterhouse, where he was a classmate of Richard Steele, and at Oxford, where he became a distinguished classical scholar. His travels on the Continent from 1699 to 1703 were recorded in Remarks on Italy (1705). Addison first achieved prominence with The Campaign (1704), an epic celebrating the victory of Marlborough at Blenheim. The poem was commissioned by Lord Halifax, and its great success resulted in Addison's appointment in 1705 as undersecretary of state and in 1709 as secretary to the lord lieutenant of Ireland. He also held a seat in Parliament from 1708 until his death. Addison's most enduring fame was achieved as an essayist. In 1710 he began his contributions to the Tatler, which Richard Steele had founded in 1709. He continued to write for successive publications, including the Spectator Guardian (1713), and the new Spectator (1714). His contributions to these periodicals raised the English essay to a degree of technical perfection never before achieved and perhaps never since surpassed. In a prose style marked by simplicity, order, and precision, he sought to engage men's thoughts toward reason, moderation, and a harmonious life. His works also include an opera libretto, Rosamund (1707); a prose comedy

Cato (A Tragedy in Five Acts) by Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719) Rendered with this introduction by Richard Lewis of Stoic Voice Journal I take great pleasure in presenting the following rendering of Joseph Addison's play Cato . I first became aware of the play while reading the writings of Jim Stockdale. In an essay on public virtue, he writes: "George Washington was so taken with the character of Cato the younger in Joseph Addison's 1713 play Cato that he made the Roman republican his role model. He went to see Cato numerous times from early manhood into maturity and even had it performed for his troops at Valley Forge despite a congressional resolution that plays were inimical to republican virtue. Washington included lines from the play in his private correspondence and even in his farewell address." ( Thoughts of a Philosophical Fighter Pilot , Hoover Press, 1995, p.75.) Of course, this perked my interest and sent me out in search of Cato . As fate would have it, I found a very worn 1848 edition of The Works of Joseph Addison in three volumes at our local college in Helena and was given permission to borrow the volume containing Cato for several months to copy the text.

WORKS OF THE LATE RIGHT HONOURABLE JOSEPH ADDISON, edited by Thomas Tickell London John Baskerville for J. and R. Tonson 1761 4 volumes. First Baskerville edition. Engraved portrait frontispiece after Kneller, 3 full page engravings by Grignion after Hayman, 13 leaves with woodcuts of coins. 4to, contemporary red morocco, expertly and sympathetically rebacked, decorated with fine gilt rolled borders on covers, black lettering pieces and gilt tooled designs on the spines between raised bands. A fine set, clean throughout. John Baskerville is generally regarded as the first "fine" English printer: he is credited with bringing the typography of the Isles up to a par with that of the continent. The beauty of his editions is frequently attributed as much to the quality of his papers and ink, but the excellence of his type cannot be denied. Dibdin says, "He united in a singularly happy manner the elegance of Plantin with the clearness of the Elzevirs..." (Introd. to the Classics).
This edition of Addison ranks among his finest productions. "A glorious performance," according to Dibdin and one of the finest productions of the Baskerville Press.

    Censure
I t is folly for an eminent man to think of escaping censure, and a weakness to be affected with it. All the illustrious persons of ;antiquity, and indeed of every age in the world, have passed through this fiery persecution.
    Consequences
T here is not any present moment that is unconnected with some future one. The life of every man is a continued chain of incidents, each link of which hangs upon the former. The transition from cause to effect, from event to event, is often carried on by secret steps, which our foresight cannot divine, and our sagacity is unable to trace. Evil may at some future period bring forth good; and good may bring forth evil, both equally unexpected.

    Addison, Joseph (1672-1719)
A good conscience is to the soul what health is to the body; it preserves constant ease and serenity within us; and more than countervails all the calamities and afflictions which can befall us from without. Cheerfulness keeps up a kind of daylight in the mind, and fills it with a steady and perpetual serenity. For it is the chief concern of wise men to retrench the evils of life by the reasonings of philosophy; it is the employment of fools to multiply them by the sentiments of superstition. If you wish to succeed in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counselor, caution your elder brother, and hope your guardian genius. To be an atheist requires an infinitely greater measure of faith than to receive all the great truths which atheism would deny. Main page

    Addison, Joseph (1672-1719)
English writer and editor whose essays endorsed pluralism and, in particular the principle of plenitude . In The Spectator of October 25, 1712, having noted the diversity of life on Earth, he writes . . . it seems very probable from the Analogy of Reason, that if no part of Matter, which we are acquainted with, lies waste and useless, those great Bodies which are at such a Distance from us should not be desart and unpeopled, but rather they should be furnished with Beings adapted to their respective Situations.
