BIO
Warren Adler is the author of several novels, including THE WAR OF THE ROSES, which was filmed with Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner. Born in Brooklyn, New York, he was educated in the New York City school system and graduated from New York University with a B.A. in English. He is married and has three sons. Interview October 8, 1999 We think that author Warren Adler should be a household name by now. He's written 23 books, two of which have been made into film with big stars and directors - WAR OF THE ROSES and the recent RANDOM HEARTS. This talented writer dives into the hearts, minds, and psyches of his characters in every one of his books. TBR's Executive Producer Carol Fitzgerald plucked this book from our reading table, loved it and knew there was an interview to be had. She felt the writer nailed the subject of intimacy in marriage dead on. Find out what Adler thinks of the film Random Hearts, the Internet, the movie industry, marriage and more in this telling interview. BRC: RANDOM HEARTS was first published in 1984. After fifteen years, the story holds up so well. When it was first published, what was the reaction from readers? In 1984 I would think this topic may have seemed a tad more radical.

Warren Adler Warren Adler has risen to the top rank of American writers with 16 books already published world-wide, two more to be published this year (1991), a hit movie, a scheduled three hour American Playhouse (PBS) trilogy, and a sale to Hollywood which netted the highest price ever for an unpublished manuscript. With his books translated into most major languages, the success of the hit movie based on his novel, The War of the Roses , and three major movies nearing production, Adler has ignited a publishing/movie war for his material. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Adler graduated from New York University with a major in English Literature. He worked for the New York Daily News and was editor of the Queens Post before moving to Washington, D.C. He owned Warren Adler, Ltd., an advertising and public relations agency in Washington for 18 years. Adler also owned and operated an NBC affiliate television station, three radio stations, and a trade publishing business. Now expanded and operated by his son, it is known today as The Adler Group. Warren Adler's Summer Reading List
PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST, AS AN OLD MAN

by Joseph Heller
This book was dismissed when it first came out, but it should be read by anyone interested in the writing game. Heller gets into the mind of the aging protagonist and, with humor and insight, bits into the nitty gritty of the aging process and the way in which the exit route is strewn with many minefields. THE RISE OF THEODORE ROOSEVELT
by Edmund Morris
This is absolute must reading for anyone interested in politics. Edmund Morris, who wrote DUTCH, the much maligned but brilliant Reagan biography, has written the quintessential life of one of America's most important Presidents. Considering the thin intellectual gruel of our present President, the Roosevelt book will make one nostalgic for the days when it was possible for a great man to become a great President.

March 23, 2003 The Stone Reader , An Ode to Novels and Their Authors For those who continue to revere the novel as the art form of choice in a world teetering on the edge of literary bankruptcy, I recommend the heartfelt award winning film documentary The Stone Reader by Mark Moskowitz. I saw it at the Film Forum in Manhattan, and it's worthy of comment here.
The Stone Reader
A Film by Mark Moskowitz
Mark has made a very personal film about his quest for author Dow Mossman who wrote one book, The Stones of Summer , which was well reviewed in the New York Times nearly thirty years ago. Dow was never heard from again as a novelist. The favorable review attracted the attention of Mark as a teenager. He tried to read it, could not finish it, then put it aside. Years later, he picked it up again, read it avidly, and it became a life-changing, positive personal experience. According to Mark, the author truly spoke to him and offered resonating insights that enriched his understanding. An author had found his reader. Mark became obsessed with the question of why this writer, whose work affected him so deeply, never published another book and of what became of him. He set out to look for him and find the answer to his question.

A successful writer for three decades, he is embracing the new technology of publishing with entrepreneurial enthusiasm, while younger writers remain cautious toward the development of e-books and print-on-demand services. Perhaps Adler's flexibility stems from his string of successful careers. A reporter for several New York City-area newspapers, he served as a Pentagon correspondent for the Armed Forces Press Service during the Korean War. For many years, he ran a successful public relations and advertising firm in Washington, D.C. He has owned radio stations and was publisher of Washington Dossier magazine. He's a warm, conversive, positive-thinking gentleman. He's also the author of 24 novels, two of which have been made into high-profile movies: Random Hearts

The War of the Roses
A Novel by Warren Adler The classic story of a nasty divorce. This is the book that inspired one of the most famous movies about divorce ever produced. The movie is shown somewhere in the world every week, and the book has been translated in almost every language on the planet. “War of the Roses” tells the story of Oliver and Barbara Rose, who thought they had a perfect marriage, only to discover that their relationship was barely skin deep. The war they wage against each other eventually descends into brutality and madness as they destroy each other’s most prized possessions and spiral into chaos. The global impact of both the book and the movie has brought the phrase "The War of the Roses" into the accepted jargon describing the terrible hatred and cruelty engendered in divorce proceedings. Read the first chapter Free Now! A Major Motion Picture starring Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner released by Twentieth Century Fox.

RANDOM HEARTS
Warren Adler

Ballantine Books
Fiction
ISBN: 0345436121 It's often said that someone outside a marriage can never understand what goes on inside it. The relationship is defined by a million tiny nuances, habits and gestures that shape it. Whether a marriage works, or does not, cannot be explored by someone outside the relationship who is not privy to these moments between the couple. RANDOM HEARTS is the story of Vivien and Edward, two people who are thrust inside each other's lives - and marriages - because of their unfaithful spouses. They explore their marriages as a way to discover why their spouses cheated on them - and when and how. Exploring the intimacy of these relationships has them looking at painful topics as they look not only at themselves, but also at what their marriages actually were beyond what they appeared to be. As they dig deeper into the stories, they also find themselves attracted to one another and the relationship between them grows. It is also the story of Lily and Orson, their spouses - the other random hearts that came together and unraveled the marriages.
