Agnon, Shmuel Yosef 1888-1970, Israeli novelist and short-story writer, b. Galicia, Poland, as Samuel Josef Czaczkes. He changed his name after settling in Palestine in 1907, where he remained for the rest of his life, except for 10 years in Germany (1913-23). Although he initially wrote in both Hebrew and Yiddish, eventually he wrote in Hebrew alone. He is regarded as the greatest modern writer of fiction in Hebrew. Often containing symbolic and mystical elements, his novels and stories frequently focus on the problems of Jews assimilating into Western culture. Agnon shared the 1966 Nobel Prize for literature with the poet Nelly Sachs. His works include the novels The Bridal Canopy (1919, tr., 1967), A Guest for the Night (1938, tr., 1968), and The Day Before Yesterday (1945); the short-story collections Two Tales (tr. 1966) and Twenty-One Stories (tr. 1970); In the Heart of the Seas (1947, tr., 1966) and A Simple Story (1935, Eng. tr., 1985).

Our sages of blessed memory have said that we must not enjoy any pleasure in this world without reciting a blessing. If we eat any food, or drink any beverage, we must recite a blessing over them before and after. If we breathe the scent of goodly grass, the fragrance of spices, the aroma of good fruits, we pronounce a blessing over the pleasure. The same applies to pleasures of the sight. And the same applies to pleasures of the ear. I belong to the tribe of Levi. I was five years old when I wrote my first song. It was out of longing for my father that I wrote it. Who were my mentors in poetry and literature? This is a matter of opinion. Some see in my books the influences of authors whose names, in my ignorance, I have not even heard, while others see the influences of poets whose names I have heard but whose writings I have not read. And what is my opinion? From whom did I receive nurture? Not every man remembers the name of the cow which supplied him with each drop of milk he has drunk. People’s talk and the stories they tell have been engraved on my heart, and some of them have flown into my pen.

In it, he displays the skill of a consummate novelist with the sensibilities of a poet. For those who are familiar with Hebrew poetry, particularly Biblical poetry, "Only Yesterday" conveys in English the rhythms and structure of classic Hebrew poetry while transmitting a sensual and, ultimately, tragic story. It is really not comparable to Singer; it is something far above and beyond Singer's work. Agree and Disagree As a lover of Yiddish writers I disagree with the reviewer who compared S.Y. Agnon to Isaac Bashevis Singer. I enjoyed Only Yesterday but don't think it compares at all to anything written by Singer. I found many passages in this book seemingly pointless and rambling, the grammar, in parts, was simplistic as was the style. This could have been the "fault" of the translators. I did enjoy parts of the books and wanted the whole book to be as good as the best parts but it wasn't the case. If you love books written by Yiddish authors I wholeheartedly recommend reading Only Yesterday by S.Y. Agnon but I urge you to read everything by Isaac Bashevis Singer.

Agnon, Shmuel Yosef Shmuel Yosef Agnon (1888-1970) was born in Buczacz, Eastern Galicia. Raised in a mixed cultural atmosphere, in which Yiddish was the language of the home, and Hebrew the language of the Bible and the Talmud which he studied formally until the age of nine, Agnon also acquired a knowledge of German literature from his mother, and of the teachings of Maimonides and of the Hassidim from his father. In 1907 he left home and made his way to Palestine, where, except for an extended stay in Germany from 1913 to 1924, he has remained to this day.
At an early age, Agnon began writing the stories which form a chronicle of the decline of Jewry in Galicia. Included among these is his first major publication, Hakhnasat Kalah (The Bridal Canopy), 1922, which re-creates the golden age of Hassidism, and his apocalyptic novel, Oreach Nata Lalun (A Guest for the Night), 1939, which vividly depicts the ruin of Galicia after the First World War. Nearly all of his other writings are set in his adopted Palestine and deal with the replacement of the early Jewish settlement of that country by the more organized Zionist movement after the Second World War. The early pioneer immigrants are portrayed in his epic Temol Shilshom (Only Yesterday), 1945, considered his greatest work, and also in the nightmarish stories of Sefer Hamaasim (The Book of Deeds), 1932.
