THE ANNA AKHMATOVA MUSEUM AT FOUNTAIN HOUSE
In 1989, on the 100th anniversary of the poets birth, the Anna Akhmatova Museum was opened in the southern garden wing of Sheremetev Palace ( also called Fountain House) one of the most beautiful of St. Petersburgs 18th century private residences. Sheremetev Palace, located at 34 Fontanka, is not the only place where Akhmatova lived in St. Petersburg, but she did spend most of her life there. The special aura of the ancient palace with its rich past and myriad legends helped inspire her creations.
Akhmatova moved into the building in the mid 1920s and lived there until 1952. The apartment in which she lived belonged to her husband, the famous art critic and research scholar at the Russian Museum, Nikolai Nikolaevich Punin. Displayed throughout the rooms where the Punins lived, the museum exhibits are devoted to Anna Akhmatovas life and creative work. The poet shared the tragic destiny of her nation and the exhibits detail her importance in the history of Russian society, literature, and culture from 1910 through the 1960s. In addition to the historical-literary sections, there are two memorial rooms: Punins study restored accurately to the way it appeared by using photographs and old floor plans and Akhmatovas own room where she lived from 1938 through the autumn of 1941.
The museums collection consists of over 13,500 primary articles of memorabilia and over 25,000 auxiliary items. The unique library of St. Petersburg bibliophile, M. S. Lesman, containing over 3,000 books (a gift from his widow, N. G. Knyaseva) forms the basis of the museums book collection. The Punin family donated Anna Akhmatovas library to the museum, and the historian and writer J. A. Gordin added Joseph Brodskys library, letters, and belongings, which provided a start to the Brodsky collection. Two exhibitions devoted to Brodsky took place in 1996 and 1997.

Introduction Anna Akhmatova captured the spirit and imagination of Russia for more than half a century. She contributed to the modern day mythos of St. Petersburg by her writing and personality over the different milestone events of 20th century Russian history, from the fall of the empire to the Revolution, the civil war, the world wars and the heyday of communism.
I would like to lead you through a journey retracing the steps in Anna Akhmatova’s life. This journey shall introduce us to the places where Anna Akhmatova lived or close connections with. Several of these places have a great significance to her writing and role as the voice of Russia’s conscience through many tough times.
One of the most important places in her life is of course the imperial summer resort of Tsarskoe Selo , close to St Petersburg. We shall also briefly explore other places in Anna Akhmatova’s life – such as where she was born, life abroad, and where she was finally buried.

Anna Akhmatova
Biographical/Historical Overview by Jill T. Dybka
A Life Amid Change Akhmatova was born Anna Andreevna Gorenko. She was raised in an upper class family in the town of Tsarskoye Selo, near St. Petersburg. At an early age, she became interested in poetry, though it was not fashionable at the time. When her father found out about her aspirations, he told her not to shame the family name by becoming a "decadent poetess" (Kenyon 2). He forced her to take a pen-name, and she chose the last name of her maternal Great-Grandmother, a Tartar, from whom she inherited high cheekbones and striking features. She started signing her name "Anna Andreevna Akhmatova." That same year, the Revolution of 1905 took place. Thousands marched to the Tsar's palace, and many were shot by palace guards on "Bloody Sunday." From then on, the downfall of the Autocracy was near. Nicholas II implemented reforms to try to stop the strikes and unrest, but his government was weakening. In 1910, Akhmatova married Nikolai Gumilev. He was a romantic figure, a poet and adventurer enamored with North Africa. Gumilev founded a literary movement in Russia called "Acmeism," which was a reaction to the current Symbolism. The Acmeists emphasized clarity and directness, in contrast to the Symbolists, who the Acmeists believed clouded their poetry with ideologies and intangibilities like mysticism and symbols (Gibian 1). Shortly after Gumilev and Akhmatova were married, he left on a journey to Abyssinia, leaving her behind. While Gumilev was away, Akhmatova wrote many of the poems that would be published in 1912 in her first book

Acmeism
The movement of Acmeism began in the early twentieth century, partially as a reaction against symbolism. In defiance of the older poets whose innovations had changed poetry in Russia, Nikolai Gumilev Anna Akhmatova , and Osip Mandel'shtam began to apply their own ideas to the art of building poetry. They wanted to bring the art form back down to earth. They did not believe poetry was tied to mysticism and thought that poets (who were talented human beings rather than the prophets of symbolism) should express ideas about culture, the word, and human existence. Time was transparent to the acmeists. The past, present and future met in the lines of their poetry. The Hellenistic age encroached on twentieth century Russia, and the acmeists continued the symbolist tradition of incorporating mythical and biblical figures into their verses.
Nikolai Gumilev
Nikolai Gumilev (1886-1921) was a poet and literary theorist and critic. He and Anna Akhmatova had a tumultuous marriage from 1910 to 1918. Many of his poems were influenced by his trips to Africa, where he was captivated by the landscape and wildlife. It is said that he wrote the poem

In Dream
Black and enduring separation
I share equally with you.
Why weep? Give me your hand,
Promise me you will come again.
You and I are like high mountains
and we can't move closer.
Just send me word,
At midnight sometime through the stars. Akhmatova, Anna, pseudonym of Anna Andreyevna Gorenko (1888-1966) born near Odesa, Ukraine. Russian lyric poet, considered one of the greatest poets in the history of Russian literature. With Osip Mandelstam she was a leader of the early 20th-century Acmeist movement, which called for use of poetic language that would convey exact meanings with simplicity and clarity. Akhmatova's principal motif is love, mainly frustrated and tragic love, expressed with an intensely feminine accent and inflection entirely her own. Museums of the Mind
