The Lorelei
Yonder we see it from the steamer's deck,
The haunted Mountain of the Lorelei -
The hanging crags sharp-cut against a sky
Clear as a sapphire without flaw or fleck.
'T was here the Siren lay in wait to wreck
The fisher-lad. At dusk, as he rowed by,
Perchance he heard her tender amorous cry,
And, seeing the wondrous whiteness of her neck,
Perchance would halt, and lean towards the shore;
Then she by that soft magic which she had
Would lure him, and in gossamers of her hair, Gold upon gold, would wrap him o'er and o'er, Wrap him, and sing to him, and drive him mad, Then drag him down to no man knoweth where. Thomas Bailey Aldrich Projekt Loreley, 2001

Why VDARE? VDARE People Pages VDARE Links ... Thomas Bailey Aldrich WIDE open and unguarded stand our gates,
Named of the four winds, North, South, East, and West; Portals that lead to an enchanted land
Of cities, forests, fields of living gold,
Vast prairies, lordly summits touched with snow,
Majestic rivers sweeping proudly past
The Arab's date-palm and the Norseman's pine
A realm wherein are fruits of every zone,
Airs of all climes, for lo! throughout the year
The red rose blossoms somewhere - a rich land,
A later Eden planted in the wilds, With not an inch of earth within its bound But if a slave's foot press it sets him free. Here, it is written, Toil shall have its wage, And Honor honor, and the humblest man Stand level with the highest in the law. Of such a land have men in dungeons dreamed, And with the vision brightening in their eyes Gone smiling to the fagot and the sword. Wide open and unguarded stand our gates, And through them presses a wild motley throng Men from the Volga and the Tartar steppes

67. The Story Of A Bad Boy. Thomas Bailey Aldrich. Review
The Story of a Bad Boy. thomas bailey aldrich, illustrated by Harold M.Brett. aldrich links thomas bailey aldrich from a Portsmouth site.
http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze2c48q/books/BadBoy.htm
The Story of a Bad Boy Aldrich was a contemporary and friend of Mark Twain. This book is said to be a partial inspiration for Tom Sawyer, and that seems plausible. It is interesting juvenile semi-fiction and semi-biography, set in the 1840's or early 1850's. It's decades past the War of 1812, tho that is still an older adult memory, and well before the Civil War. The place is mostly Portsmouth NH (called Rivermouth here), altho it begins in New Orleans. The boy, Tom Bailey, is brought by his parents from New Orleans to live with his grandfather in Rivermouth. This presents the opportunity to introduce the people and town of Rivermouth, and to amuse us with the peculiar concepts of the North held by some Southerners then. His voyage on the sailing ship Typhoon is interesting, and they land in Boston. Boston is very different from New Orleans, and then the trip to Rivermouth is by train - a memorable trip, traveling at a fearful rate. His descriptions of the house and town presumably were nostalgic memories even when the book was written. His new household consists of Tom, Grandfather Captain Nutter, Miss Abigail Nutter (the Captain's sister), and their Irish housekeeper, Kitty Collins (for light ethnic contrast). The household was run by old people, in the old Puritan New England manner, so evenings were quiet, and Sundays were stifling. Tom is homesick, but he has a pony he loves, and Grandfather puts him in school (boys only, apparently private). The boys tease and test him, he finds a compatible group, and the rest of the stories involve Tom as a leader of this troop, the Rivermouth Centipedes. They ramble thru the woods and at the shore; they put on a play, play baseball and marbles, and play pranks around town. Tom trains his pony and fights the bully. The constables are called out when the North-side versus South-side snowball fights get serious.

HASCHEESH.
by Thomas Bailey Aldrich
c. 1861
S TRICKEN with thought, I staggered through the night;
The heavens leaned down to me with splendid fires;
The seven Pleiads, changed to magic lyres,
Made music as I went; and to my sight
A Palace shaped itself against the skies:
Great sapphire-studded portals suddenly
Opened upon vast Gothic galleries
Of gold and ebony, and I could see,
Through half-drawn curtains that let in the day,
Dim tropic gardens stretching far away!
Ah! what a wonder seized upon my soul, When from that structure of the upper airs I saw unfold a flight of crystal stairs For my ascending. . . . . Then I heard the roll Of unseen oceans clashing at the Pole. . . . A terror fell upon me . . . . a vague sense Of near calamity. O, lead me hence! I shrieked, and lo! from out a darkling hole That opened at my feet, crawled after me, Up the broad staircase, creatures of huge size, Fanged, warty monsters, with their lips and eyes Hung with slim leeches sucking hungrily. -

The American Renaissance
The stories of Poe Hawthorne and Melville are some of the most important in American Literature. Together with such contemporaries as the poets Longfellow and Whitman, and essayists Emerson and Thoreau, these brilliant writers are known as the American Renaissance. They form a key phase in American culture. Their stories tend to be heavily plotted, and often are directly ancestral to such modern genres as the mystery story and science fiction, both of which tend to feature complex plots. The stories tend to be highly imaginative, but not especially realistic. They are written in a rich, complex prose style, which seems derived from poetry, especially the works of Shakespeare, and such Romantic poets as Coleridge. Oftentimes there is considerable direct discussion in the tales of matters of philosophy, culture, human thought, and life. There are also often symbolic meanings contained in the stories.
