B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Vicente Aleixandre (1898-1984) Spanish poet, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1977. Aleixandre has been called an existentialist, a mystic pantheist, and a neoromantic. Although Aleixandre did not consider himself an orthodox surrealist , the influence of Freudianism, subconscious associations and dreamlike images, can been seen in his poems. Central motifs in Aleixandre's works are erotic love, solitary, time, and death. " The poet, the truly determinative poet, is always a revealer; he is, essentially, a seer, a prophet. But his "prophecy" is of course not a prophecy about the future; for it may have to do with the past: it is a prophecy without time. Illuminator, aimer of light, chastiser of mankind, the poet is the possessor of a Sesame which in a mysterious way is, so to speak, the word of his destiny." (from Nobel Lecture, 1977) After 1922 Aleixandre started to have serious problems with his health. In a few years he became semi-invalid. He retired to his father's house in the countryside and devoted himself entirely to writing. "Solitude and meditation gave me an awareness, a perspective which I have never lost: that of solidarity with the rest of mankind." Withdrawn and in delicate health, Aleixandre wrote secretly until his first poems were published by friends in 1926 in the magazine

Vicente Aleixandre

Vicente Aleixandre (1898-1984 ), Spain. Poet Nobel Prize in Literature, 1977. The Nobel Prize was granted to Vicente Aleixandre "for a creative poetic writing which illuminates men's condition in the cosmos and present-day society, at the same time representing the great renewal of the traditions of Spanish poetry between the wars."Aleixandre was highly admired in Spain and in Latin America as a life long poet of the people, beginning with his membership in the so-called Poetic Group of 1927, with roots in both the Spanish lyric tradition and in modernism. His poems are free verse and deal with love, death, and eternity. Most of his early poems were sad love poems, but later, his writings rose above the early pessimistic emptiness. Aleixandre, Vicente
(b. April 26, 1898, Seville, Spaind. Dec. 14, 1984, Madrid), Spanish poet, a member of the Generation of 1927, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1977. He was strongly influenced by the Surrealist technique of poetic composition. Aleixandre was the son of a railway engineer. He studied law and business management and from 1920 to 1922 taught commercial law. He became seriously ill in 1925 and during his convalescence wrote his first poems. He remained in Spain during the Spanish Civil War although his poetry was banned from 1936 to 1944. In 1949 Aleixandre was elected to the Spanish Royal Academy. Aleixandre was considered a master of free verse, the style that appears in his first major book, La (1935; "Destruction or Love"), which was awarded the National Prize for Literature. In this work the poet explored the theme of human identification with the physical cosmos. Similar themes appear in (1944; "Shadow of Paradise"). A greater emphasis upon human life is found in (1954; "History of the Heart") and
