Alger, Horatio 1834-99, American writer of boys' stories, b. Revere, Mass. He wrote over 100 books for boys, the first, Ragged Dick, being published in 1867. By leading exemplary lives, struggling valiantly against poverty and adversity, Alger's heroes gain wealth and honor. His works were all extremely popular. Silas Snobden's Office Boy, which ran serially in the Argosy magazine in 1889-90, was not published as a book until 1973. See H. R. Mayes, Alger (1928, repr. 1978); study by Edwin P. Hoyt (1983); bibliography by Gary Scharnhorst and Jack Bales (1981).

He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Harvard Divinity School in 1852. During the Harvard days he studied under renowned writer Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with the intention of one day becoming a poet.
In his twenties, he was rejected by the Union Army because of his asthma. His interests shifted him toward teaching as well as becoming a newspaper correspondent for the Boston Transcript and the New York Sun newspapers.
His religious training was tested over the years when he relocated to Paris. In 1864, he returned to America and became a Unitarian minister then later a social service worker in New York. It was in these ghettos where he first saw the plight of the poor and homeless.
From this witness of devastating poverty is where Alger developed his rags-to-riches theme for his soon to be popular books. He was to become the nineteenth century preacher on the gospel of success.

    Alger, Horatio
Horatio Alger, Jr. (1832-1899) was a prolific juvenile writer, having written more than 100 works of fiction which sold in excess of 200 million copies. These numbers make him the best-selling American writer of all time. His stories appeared in a variety of formats, including serial publications, monographs, and ephemeral pamphlets. In addition to publishing under his own name, it is known that Alger published other stories using pseudonyms. It is likely, therefore, that many of Alger's stories are lost and the true number may never be known.

Horatio Alger by Carrie Conger Links to Online Resources Books and Articles Horatio Alger was born January thirteenth to the daughter to a wealthy landowner and a Unitarian minister. His education did not begin until he was six years of age, taught by his father. At the age of sixteen, Alger entered Harvard, earning his tuition by running errands for the president. While at Harvard, he excelled at academics, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, and was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity.
    Horatio Alger , 1832-1899
His series was popular until the publishers stopped issuing them, which was in the 1920's. Some reasons for this may be that his stories, "…even though their plots, characterizations, and dialogue were consistently, even outrageously bad," (Britannica, par. 3), Brought hope to the working man, because the cheerful, diligent, virtuous character in is book always got the wonderful reward he deserved. The Horatio Alger Society now gives a Horatio Alger Award to individuals that achieve success trough self-reliance, decency, honesty, and self-discipline, who are, in short, characters from a Horatio Alger novel, pulling themselves up by the bootstraps and claiming their American Dream.

    57. Horatio Alger: The Moral Of The Story, By Theodore Dalrymple
horatio alger Jr. was the biggest American media star of his day. 10, No. 4.horatio alger The Moral of the Story. by Stefan Kanfer. horatio alger Jr.
    http://www.city-journal.org/html/10_4_urbanities-the_moral.html
Horatio Alger: The Moral of the Story by Stefan Kanfer H oratio Alger Jr. was the biggest American media star of his day. Though nineteenth-century best-seller lists were impressionistic—and the sale of 10,000 volumes was deemed a publishing triumph in those days—readers bought at least 200 million copies of his books, placing him in the Stephen King category. Today all but three of those hundred-odd novels are out of print. Alger himself is considered a dinosaur of popular literature, a writer whose "strive and succeed" philosophy is as cringe-making as that of his contemporary, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ("Life is real! Life is earnest!/And the grave is not its goal"). A pity: for Alger was at the forefront of a phenomenally successful experiment in social reform and improvement, a broad movement that inspired poor kids to take advantage of America's social mobility and that led tens of thousands of New York's post-Civil War juvenile delinquents into productive lives. Those who care about the future of the city's poor should re-examine Alger's message: it worked once, and could work again. G iven the tendency of nineteenth-century novelists to thinly disguised autobiography, you might guess that Alger himself was the rags-to-riches hero of his own life. But the real Horatio Alger story, as compelling as any novel, is darker. The sickly child of a Unitarian minister in Marlborough, Massachusetts, Horatio, born in 1832, was always the smallest in his class and far from an academic star—mainly because, a stutterer, he hated to recite the answers even when he knew them. Still, his record was good enough for admission to Harvard. There his academic achievements were in inverse proportion to his size (5’2"): he won academic prizes, experimented with verse and fiction, and regarded the entire four years as a period of "unmixed happiness."
