The hard necessity of bringing the judge on the bench down into the dock has been the peculiar responsibility of the writer in all ages of man. The Impossible Generalized Man is the critic who believes in loving those unworthy of love as well as those worthy yet believes this only insofar as no personal risk is entailed. Meaning he loves no one, worthy or no. This is what makes him impossible. I went out there [Hollywood] for a thousand a week, and I worked Monday, and I got fired Wednesday. The guy that hired me was out of town Tuesday. The avocation of assessing the failures of better men can be turned into a comfortable livelihood, providing you back it up with a Ph.D.

Algren, Nelson Chicago: City on the Make 50th Anniversary Edition, Newly Annotated . Annotated by David Schmittgens and Bill Savage. x, 132 p. (est.). 5-1/2 x 8 Paper CUSA $15.00 0-226-01385-5 Fall 2001 Ernest Hemingway once said of Nelson Algren's writing that "you should not read it if you cannot take a punch." The prose poem, Chicago: City on the Make , filled with language that swings and jabs and stuns, lives up to those words. This 50th anniversary edition is newly annotated with explanations for everything from slang to Chicagoans, famous and obscure, to what the Black Sox scandal was and why it mattered. More accessible than ever, this is, as Studs Terkel says, "the best book about Chicago." "Algren's Chicago, a kind of American annex to Dante's inferno, is a nether world peopled by ratfaced hustlers and moneyloving demons who crawl in the writer's brilliant, sordid, uncompromising and twisted imagination. . . . [This book] searches a city's heart and mind rather than its avenues and public buildings." New York Times Book Review "This short, crisp, fighting creed is both a social document and a love poem, a script in which a lover explains his city's recurring ruthlessness and latent power; in which an artist recognizes that these are portents not of death, but of life."

Biographical Sketch
Nelson Algren (1909-1981) was best known for The Man With the Golden Arm (1949), which won the first National Book Award, and A Walk on the Wild Side (1956), which was a re-writing of his less-successful first book, Somebody in Boots (1935). Algren grew up in a poor neighborhood of Chicago which influenced his writing and provided background for some of his books. His characters were typically the poorest of the poor, and in his prose he bitterly depicted the hostile environment such people find themselves in, unafraid to lay blame at the feet of the capitalist society which both gave rise to this hostility and insisted on glossing over it. In the 1960s and 1970s, Algren produced a number of less noteworthy anthologies, and fell back into journalism (as he had been trained), covering the Vietnam war. He also taught writing at numerous universities, lectured, and wrote book reviews. His last novel, The Devil's Stocking , was published posthumously in 1983.
