C D E-G ... T-Z 1266. ADELMAN, GARY. 1935- Honey Out of Stone, A lyrical, intimate, and sensuous love story, Honey Out of Stone is an autobiographical novel set mostly in Champaign-Urbana. The author, a faculty member at the University of Illinois, describes the onset of his blindness at the age of thirty, his despair when his wife of three years leaves him shortly thereafter, and his soaring joy when his childhood sweetheart leaves her own unhappy marriage to become his second wife. The free-flowing poetic prose is not always easy for the uninitiated to follow, and images, beautiful and common, often crowd each other in both the prose sections and the extensive pages of interspersed poetry. Nevertheless, the novel tells effectively of the rejuvenating powers of love. Kirkus, 1/1/1970, p. 28. Library Journal, 2/15/1970, p. 657. Publishers Weekly, 1/12/1970, p. 63. 1267. B C-D E ... T-Z 780. ADLER, KATHERINE KEITH. The Crystal Icicle, [by] Katherine Keith. New York: Harcourt Brace and Company, [1930.] 287p. A love triangle develops as Hal Muir realizes that Nancy, his wife of seven years, is frigid; but that Joan Peal, who works for the same newspaper as he, isn't. Troubled by his desires, he confesses to Nancy, who resorts to hysteria and threatens to leave him. As tensions mount, the affair begins to wear itself out, and Hal settles down contentedly with Nancy, who at just the proper moment, has become pregnant. Mrs. Adler's basic theme is somewhat overworked, but her style, her choice of words, and her characterization are impeccable. Although no locale is mentioned by nature, descriptions of Chicago's downtown area, the Gothic arches of the Tribune Tower, and the Muir's farm home on the prairie are so graphic that they leave no question of an Illinois setting. Book Review Digest, 1930, p. 570.

57. Nelson Algren | Interviews With Artisits
nelson algren felt the best way to know Chicago was from the bottom up. GBTell me about Thom Cox, who plays the role of nelson algren.
http://www.networkchicago.com/algren/interviews.htm

John Musial, Director
Thom Cox, Performer Dave Pavkovic, Composer Griffin Rodreiguez, Musician
Interview with the Artists
John Musial
Following are excerpts from a conversation between producer Geoffrey Baer and John Musial. Musial adapted and directed both the stage and the TV adaptation. As part of the stage production, Musial created black and white films which were projected behind and sometimes on top of performer Thom Cox. The same films are used extensively in the TV adaptation. GB: Why did you decide to use films as part of a stage play? JM: What we were trying to do [was] to bring real life onto the stage, into the theater, as opposed to having flats of a painted skyline. We wanted to bring real life into it because Algren is writing about real life. It’s not a theatrical piece. When I first read City on the Make , I saw it as a film, which is an odd thing because it doesn’t have any characters. It doesn’t have any plot. But there’s an image that comes out of it that is very filmic. The sweep of his gaze is very panoramic and very cinematic. All of his words create very vivid images and he moves from image to image in a poetic sort of way. It’s a film theater piece, …and we’ve even performed it in real spaces, in non-theatrical spaces like rooftops and in bars.

By nights when the yellow salamanders of the EL bend all one way and the cold rain runs with the red-lit rain. By the way the city's million wires are burdened only by lightest snow; When chairs are stacked and glasses are turned and arc-lamps all are dimmed. By days when the wind bangs alley gates ajar and the sun goes by on the wind. By nights when the moon is an only child above the measured thunder of the cars, you may know Chicago's heart at last. Nelson Algren: Chicago: City on the Make Of Current Interest: March 14, saw the 12th annual Nelson Algren Birthday party and Stu McCarrell tribute. The Chopin theater, just opposite the Algren fountain hosted. We pulled over a hundred people on a rainy Chicago night. The very first birthday party was at Lotty's pub, and since then we've moved down Milwaukee Ave. to the Chopin Theater. Richard Harding, and Art Shay showed up unannounced for the event. We missed Len Des Pres, who didn't get word in time. Dennis Mueller and Mark Blottner did some great video footage for the party and the Prop Theater folks performed two songs from their current production: Brechts St. Joan. Thanks to Stefan Brun, Jenny Magnus, and Jonathan Lavan.
