Mervaunee
The University of Florida holds a corrected proof copy of William Allingham's poem Mervaunee and v. 34 of The Cornhill Magazine in which the poem was first published, Part 1 in July 1876 and Part 2 in August. The linked pages present the published version, the proof, and a side-by-side comparison of the two. On the first page of the proof, there is a crossed-out penciled version of a stanza which is also written in ink at the bottom of p. 14. As the first version is upside down, an inverted image of the page is also provided. Your browser must be frames capable to view these pages. Thanks to Mark Samuels Lasner, author of William Allingham: A Bibliographical Study (1993), for the reference to Samira Husni's William Allingham: A Bibliography (Beirut, 1984), which identifies the first appearance in print of Mervaunee. WILLIAM ALLINGHAM, poet and diary-keeper, was associated with a number of writers, poets and artists during the middle and latter part of the 19th Century. His published poetry consists of 6 volumes. However, critics have not been particularly kind to Allingham when it comes to his poetic output. Lionel Stevenson in his survey The Pre-Raphaelite Poets comments that "Allingham's talent was slender." Another critic, John Julius Norwich, writes that Allingham's poetry "seems to me to come about halfway up the second league." To the extent that casual poetry readers are familiar with Allingham, most are familiar with his poem "The Faeries." In addition to the poetry Allingham left behind an incomplete autobiography and a much more complete diary. He was born March 19, 1824 in the town of Ballyshannon in County Donegal . Donegal is in the Northwest part of Ireland and Ballyshannon sits on the Erne River just southwest of Donegal Town.
From Allingham's incomplete Autobiography.

Archived: July 31, 2000 Interview with WILLIAM ALLINGHAM
This is part of a series of interviews with current field managers of cosmic baseball teams. William Allingham , field manager of the Pre-Raphaelite Baseball Club (Underleague), is an Irish poet and diarist frequently associated with the London-based Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of the 19th century. Allingham first joined the Cosmic Baseball Association
in 1983 when he was drafted as a pitcher by the Eden Bohemians , the Cosmic Baseball Association 's team of interesting writers. Allingham pitched for 5 seasons compiling a career 49-50 won-lost record and a 3.72 earned run average (ERA). His best season was 1986. He won his team's "Most Cosmic Player" award that season on the strength of his 15-9 record and 2.89 ERA. ( Allingham Cosmic Pitching Record ). The Bohemians deactivated Allingham after the 1987 season. Ten years later when the Pre-Raphaelite Baseball Club joined the Cosmic Baseball Association , Allingham was tapped to be the team's field manager. In three complete seasons (1997-1999) Allingham has distinguished himself as a shrewd skipper compiling a 272-214 won-loss record and leading his team to a victory in the 1999 Cosmic Universal Series This interview took place on June 28, 2000 in Allingham's office before his team played a night game against the visiting

Now Autumn's fire burns slowly along the woods,
And day by day the dead leaves fall and melt,
And night by night the monitory blast
Wails in the key-hole, telling how it pass'd
O'er empty fields, or upland solitudes,
Or grim wide wave; and now the power is felt Of melancholy, tenderer in its moods Than any joy indulgent Summer dealt. Day and Night SongsAutumnal Sonnet Autumn Up the airy mountain, Down the rushy glen, We daren't go a-hunting For fear of little men; Wee folk, good folk, Trooping all together, Green jacket, red cap, And white owl's feather! UP the airy mountain,
Down the rushy glen,
We daren't go a-hunting
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together; Green jacket, red cap, And white owl's feather! Down along the rocky shore Some make their home, They live on crispy pancakes Of yellow tide-foam; Some in the reeds Of the black mountain lake, With frogs for their watch-dogs, All night awake. High on the hill-top The old King sits; He is now so old and gray He 's nigh lost his wits. With a bridge of white mist Columbkill he crosses, On his stately journeys From Slieveleague to Rosses; Or going up with music On cold starry nights To sup with the Queen Of the gay Northern Lights. They stole little Bridget For seven years long; When she came down again Her friends were all gone. They took her lightly back

They took her lightly back, Between the night and morrow, They thought that she was fast asleep, But she was dead with sorrow. They have kept her ever since Deep within the lake, On a bed of flag-leaves, Watching till she wake.

Ring ting! I wish I were a Primrose,
A bright yellow Primrose, blowing in the spring!
    The stooping bough above me,
The wandering bee to love me,
The fern and moss to creep across,
And the Elm-tree for our king! Nay, stay! I wish I were an Elm-tree,
A great lofty Elm-tree, with green leaves gay!
The winds would set them dancing,
The sun and moonshine glance in,
And birds would house among the boughs, And sweetly sing. Oh, no! I wish I were a Robin, A Robin, or a little Wren, everywhere to go, Through forest, field or garden, And ask no leave or pardon, Till winder comes with icy thumbs To ruffle up our wing! Well, tell! where should I fly to, Where to sleep, in the dark wood or dell? Before the day was over, Home must come the rover, For mother's kiss, sweeter this Than any other thing.
