    WILLIAM ALLINGHAM William Allingham THE FAIRIES : Up the airy mountain,
    Down the rushy glen,
    We daren’t go a-hunting
    For fear of little men;
    Wee folk, good folk,
    Trooping all together;
    Green jacket, red cap,
    And white owl’s feather! Down along the rocky shore
    Some make their home,
    They live on crispy pancakes
    Of yellow tide-foam; Some in the reeds Of the black mountain lake, With frogs for their watch-dogs, All night awake. High on the hill-top The old King sits; He is now so old and gray He’s nigh lost his wits. With a bridge of white mist Columbkill he crosses, On his stately journeys From Slieveleague to Rosses; Or going up with music On cold starry nights To sup with the Queen Of the gay Northern Lights. They stole little Bridget For seven years long; When she came down again Her friends were all gone. They took her lightly back, Between the night and morrow, They thought that she was fast asleep, But she was dead with sorrow. They have kept her ever since Deep within the lake

    of London's prominent writers and artists, and inevitably her path crossed that ofthe renowned Irish poet and editor of Fraser's Magazine, william allingham.
    http://www.helenallingham.com/Helen_Biography.htm
    Helen Allingham R.W.S. (1848-1926) H elen Mary Elizabeth Paterson arrived in this world on the 26 th of September, 1848 in the small village of Swadlincote, near Burton on Trent in Derbyshire, England. She was the eldest of seven children born to Alexander Henry Paterson, a rural physician, and Mary Chance Herford, daughter of a Manchester wine merchant. Within her first year of her life, the Patersons moved to Altrincham, Cheshire where Helen's father set up a medical practice and the young family grew and prospered. It was during these years that young Helen's interest and talent in art blossomed, inspired by her maternal grandmother Sarah Smith Herford, and especially her aunt Laura Herford, both accomplished artists of their day. At age thirteen, Helen's carefree childhood was shattered by the death of her father. While battling selflessly to treat local victims during a severe diphtheria epidemic, Dr. Paterson succumbed to the disease himself in May of 1862, along with Helen's three year old sister Isabel. The young family moved shortly thereafter to Birmingham where their Paterson aunts helped provide for them.

The family settled in Birmingham after the death of her father in 1862. She studied at the Birmingham School of Design under Rainbach, and in 1867 went to London to study first at the Female School of Art, and then at the Royal Academy Schools, where she was strongly influenced by Foster and Fred Walker (a noted illustrator who was the original of Little Billee in George Du Maurier 's Bohemian novel Trilby ), and the Pre- Raphaelite painters Sir John Everett Millais and Sir Frederick Leighton While in London, she stayed with her aunt, Laura Herford, who had been instrumental in opening the Royal Academy Schools to women. Allingham's initial career was as a black-and-white illustrator, her first success being in the illustrated magazine Once a Week , followed by various children's books for Cassells, plates for that firm's magazine, and London Society . According to The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature , she illustrated a number of children's books, including Mrs. Ewing's novels perhaps

    http://www.opengatepress.co.uk/frame31177.html
    ANIMAL SANCTUARY John Bryant Animal Sanctuary is a passionate and humane book about how animals behave if they are treated with decency and respect. John Bryant introduces us to a selection of animals from the sanctuary, and shows us how the natural life of these animals differs from the life they experience in conventional farms or in lives where they have to work for a living. Under his pen, the animals become characters with their own personalities; and this is the charm of the book. However, the book also performs a much needed propaganda purpose in telling lay people about how animals live in communities and with humans, and points the way to a more humane future. WILLIAM ALLINGHAM'S DIARY 1847-1889 New in paperback! One of the most fascinating source-books of Victorian literary life, the Diary of the Anglo-Irish poet William Allingham (1824-1889) was first published in 1907. He died in Hampstead, London, in 1889; his urn lies buried in the churchyard at Ballyshannon. William Allingham's Diary is a delightful book... It can be dipped into anywhere for pleasure or read at a sitting... [His Diary] has been pillaged again and again by biographers and literary critics. The Times Literary Supplement As a diarist he was superb: a shameless literary snob whose stories and descriptions of Tennyson, Carlyle, Ruskin, Rossetti, Ouida ('voice like a carving knife') and their friends evoke the 19th century like few other diarists.

    Special Collections
    Special Collections in the Rare Book and Special Collections Library are comprised of books, pamphlets, literary manuscripts, and scattered issues of journals, as well as prints, photographs, slides, and a wide range of mixed media including artifacts. In these integrated collections also may be found both rare books and recent ephemera. The collections are subject oriented but most frequently named by authors collected or the collector. Not all special collections in the libraries of UIUC are in the RBSC Library. There are over 100 named special collections located in the RBSC Library which range in size from .1 cu. ft. to 100.0 cu.ft. (Wells) or 125.0 cu. ft. (Sandburg). and scattered issues of journals, as well as prints, photographs, slides, and a wide range of mixed media including artifacts. In the past, the word "special" sometimes designated formats which did not fit the mainstream of cataloging practice and book processing. These were generally archival in nature, contained mixed media, or were in languages or scripts which required additional time and expertise to access. These collections and others which need special handling are among the collections of the RBSC Library. There is no complete item count of "special" collections. Many are unprocessed and must be accessed with a variety of catalogs and finding aids. Some are in basically the arrangement and condition when acquired. On-line access is in progress.

    Sonnets from Ireland
    Most of the sonnets here are from little known 19th century poets, and while some show the influence of Wordsworth or Tennyson, most have a distinctively Irish diction and engagement with nature. I've had difficulties locating the birth/death dates for some of these authors, so the order here is alphabetical for now. Readers may be interested in an essay about William Butler Yeats and the sonnet.
