From Peggy, with Love and Squalor
Judith Solomon / Boston Though her father hasn’t talked to her since he learned she was writing a memoir, Peggy Salinger has found plenty of other relatives to reveal some eye-opening family history Margaret (Peggy) Salinger, model-like at 44, her prominent cheekbones accentuated by gold earrings and a chic, short haircut, is standing in the plush law offices of friends, admiring spectacular views of Boston’s Mystic River. We have to meet here because the threat-management company she’s hired since the release of her memoir, "Dream Catcher," decreed no interviews at her home, in an undisclosed suburb, to which she, her opera-singer husband and 7-year-old son recently moved for safety reasons. "There are lots of crazies out there," she says, referring to those young men, like assassins Marc David Chapman and John Hinckley, whose "love" for her father J.D. Salinger’s "Catcher in the Rye" - they both carried around dog-eared copies - veers beyond that of a normal fan to a "just touch the hem of his garment and be healed" obsession. "This is not my father’s fault," she continues. "If you’re going to capture the borderline aspects of adolescence brilliantly, you’re going to capture an audience of a borderline group of guys. It becomes a problem when they respond to [the novel] at 30 the way they did at 17."

And she folded it and put it between the door and the mezuzah and went away. And I didn't see her face nor the face of the person who would read the note, and I didn't see the words. A stone rests on my desk with the word "Amen" written on it. It is a piece of a tomb, a vestige from a Jewish cemetery destroyed a thousand years ago, in the city where I was born. One word, "Amen," is cut deep into the stone—

The Same Pattern, The Same Stitch
I saw a man wearing a colorful skullcap
in the same pattern as a piece of underwear of a woman I loved long ago. He didn't understand why I was looking at him and why I turned around after him and he shrugged his shoulders and went on. And I muttered to myself: the same Colors, the same stitching, the same pattern, the same stitching, the same pattern.

Whether or not the Israelis and Palestinians ever get together on a peace deal, my pick for the Nobel Prize in literature would have been Yehuda Amichai. Israel's poet laureate died on Friday, September 22, 2000 after a long illness. He was 76. Amichai, his books translated into 37 languages beyond the original Hebrew, has long been one of the planet's preeminent poets. The evidence in English is abundant, most notably up to now in two substantial volumes: The Selected Poetry of Yehuda Amichai Yehuda Amichai: A Life of Poetry 1948-1994 , translated by Benjamin and Barbara Harshav (HarperCollins, 1994). As if that werenít enough, last spring we were given what the jacket flap touts as his magnum opus, a tightly integrated sequence of poems translated by Bloch and Chana Kronfeld, Open Closed Open.

"The most wonderful thing about Jerusalem is that I always find little corners that I don’t know. It is the biggest smallest city in the world,” Yehuda Amichai said of the city where he spent most of his life. With his death at the age of 76 on Sept. 22, Jerusalem lost its “most lyrical lover,” wrote Avi Katzman in Tel Aviv’s He fought as a volunteer in the British Army and later in the Palmach, the underground pre-Israeli-state commando force. He studied literature and biblical studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem and taught at a secondary school for many years. During his long and prolific career, he wrote about 1,000 poems and published 25 books of poetry. "Yehuda Amichai's splendid poems, refined and cast in the desperate foundries of the Middle East, where life and faith are always at stake, exhibit a majestic and Biblical range of the topography of the soul."Anthony Hecht DESCRIPTION (back to top) Yehuda Amichai is Israel's most popular poet as well as a literary figure of international reputation. In this revised and expanded collection, renowned translators Chana Bloch and Stephen Mitchell have selected Amichai's most beloved and enduring poems, including forty new poems from his recent work. from Tourists :Once I was sitting on the steps near the gate at David's Citadel and I put down my two heavy baskets beside me. A group of tourists stood there around their guide, and I became their point of reference. "You see that man over there with the baskets? A little to the right of his head there's an arch from the Roman period. A little to the right of his head." "But he's moving, he's moving!" I said to myself: Redemption will come only when they are told, "Do you see that arch over there from the Roman period? It doesn't matter, but near it, a little to the left and then down a bit, there's a man who has just bought fruit and vegetables for his family."

And forget the forest my love will remember,

Should my right forget My left shall forgive, I shall forget all water, I shall forget my mother. If I forget thee, Jerusalem, Let my blood be forgotten. Illustration by Tracey Snelling Theology for Atheists Yehuda Amichai's poetry of paradox By STEPHEN KESSLER UNTIL HIS DEATH last month in Jerusalem at the age of 76, Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai was a strong contender for the Nobel Prize in literature. His books were translated into 37 languages beyond the original Hebrew, and Amichai has long been one of the planet's pre-eminent poets. The evidence in English is abundant, most notably up to now in two substantial volumes: The Selected Poetry of Yehuda Amichai Yehuda Amichai: A Life of Poetry, 1948-1994 , translated by Benjamin and Barbara Harshav (HarperCollins, 1994). As if that weren't enough, last spring we were given what the jacket flap touts as his magnum opus, a tightly integrated sequence of poems translated by Bloch and Chana Kronfeld, Open Closed Open ( Harcourt; Brace; $25) Amichai is a connoisseur of the paradoxical. By turns, and often at the same time, erotic and metaphysical, devout and skeptical, earnest and ironic, grief-drenched and dryly witty, his poems investigate contemporary realities from a biblical perspective and rethink biblical stories from a contemporary angle. Jewish down to the bones, his humanity is broadly universal, obsessed as he is with time and death, war and peace, love and memory, joy and suffering. Zionist in his attachment to the rocks and sand of his homeland (Amichai immigrated to Palestine from Germany in 1936 at the age of 12), still he is not a nationalist in the political sense of that word.
