Then, before I knew it, all sorts of other things and other feelings were presenting themselves. It certainly got longer than I thought it was going to be. And it came fast. It came at more than twice the rate of a novel. A novel that length would have taken me four years. That took 18 months. Because I'd done half the work by living it." Martin Amis is tired. Near the end of a 30 city tour promoting his new book, the memoir Experience , Amis exudes and embodies exhaustion. A diminutive man with an appearance that is somehow surprisingly frail in a writer of this stature (as though a writer should somehow be as large as his reputation. Were that the case, Amis would be as big and imposing as a country manor). In fact, his appearance is surprising in all ways. There is more to his mien of aging rock musician than world-class author.

Amis, Martin
Had Martin Amis never published a word, he would still have occupied a place in literary history as the son of english writer Kingsley Amis, famous for works including Lucky Jim. Martin Amis was born on the 25th of August 1949 In fact, his childhood was turbulent as his family moved from Swansea in South Wales, to Princeton in the US to Majorca in Spain, onto Jamaicia in the West Indies for a spell, and finally back to North London. Martin Amis' father divorced his mother when Martin was 16 and remarried famous english writer Elizabeth Jane Howard. Martin then attended Oxford University from 1969 to 1973 where, as his father had before him, he achieved a formal 'first' in literature. Following a deal with his english tutor at Oxford, Jonathan Wordsworth, Amis took year off to write a novel. The work, subsequently made into a film, was the Rachel Papers and won Amis the Somerset Maugham award for Literature at the age of twenty-four. This again echoed his father's career as Kinglsey had also been awarded the same tribute for his first novel. bodyOffer(17679) Amis' subsequent book, Dead Babies, recounted the life of drugs and sex in a communal household and was also made into a film. He was then recruited to write for film, including the screenplay for the unsuccessful science-fiction film starring Kirk Douglas, Saturn Five. Amis also had short periods of tenure at literary journals, writing reviews for the Observer, the Time Literary Supplement, the New Statesman and the New Review.

Martin Amis
A biographical sketch from the Introduction to Understanding Martin Amis , by James Diedrick (Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 1995), reproduced here with the permission of the author.
In the twenty-four years leading up to the publication of his first novel, The Rachel Papers , Martin Amis lived the kind of life that would be the envy of any aspiring writer. He was born (on August 25, 1949) to the novelist Kingsley Amis just five years before Lucky Jim brought transatlantic fame to its author and transatlantic travel to his family. During the almost ten years Martin Amis lived in South Wales his father's friend, the poet Philip Larkin, made frequent visits to the Amis household. He spent his tenth year in America (Princeton, New Jersey), part of his thirteenth in Spain, and several months of his eighteenth filming A High Wind in Jamaica in the West Indies. By the time he was nineteen he had attended a series of fourteen schools and a series of "crammers" in London and Brighton (designed to prepare a student for university entrance). From 1969 to 1971 he attended Exeter College at Oxford University, where his tutor was Jonathan Wordsworth, a direct descendant of the poet William Wordsworth. Graduating with a formal first in literature, he was hired to write book reviews for the distinguished weekly the

Did you know? He worked on the script for Tim Burton's Mars Attacks. "I rather liked the film," he commented, "though it contained not a word I wrote." Critical verdict All his critics have noted what Kingsley Amis complained of as a "terrible compulsive vividness in his style... that constant demonstrating of his command of English"; and it's true that the Amis-ness of Amis will be recognisable in any piece before he reaches his first full stop. His standing has fallen a little recently; John Updike lamented Night Train's "post-human" quality, while Heavy Water contained, along with episodes of mature brilliance, some old pieces and recycled ideas.

Amis's inventive, suggestive use of names in his novels deserves sustained attention. Ashley's analysis of Money is a start, though his compulsive, discursive style detracts from his insights. Bellow, Janis Freedman. "Necropolis of the Heart. Review-Essay of The Information and Sabbath's Theater." Partisan Review 62 (1995): 699-718. Excellent discussion of the "postmodern decadence" of Amis's novels and whether there are artistic answers to the question of nihilism.
