(essays) Biographical Summary Born on August 25, 1949 in Oxford, England, where his father, the well-known Booker Prize winning author, Kingsley Amis, was a doctoral student, Martin Amis spent his early years in Swansea (Southern Wales) where his father taught. He later spent a year at Princeton, where again his father taught, before returning to England and settling in Cambridge. At the age of twelve his parents divorced, and Amis spent the following year on the Balearic island of Majorca, Spain, with his mother, brother and sister. The following year he returned to England, where he received a role in a film entitled A High Wind in Jamaica , but was subsequently not allowed to return to school. He completed his schooling through a series of "crammers" (intensive tutoring schools), but seemed to show little promise. One headmaster even declared Amis was "unusually unpromising."

(from The Antioch Review Fall 1994)
Martin Amis's novels feature heroes of playboy fantasies, unscrupulous upwardly-mobile yobs, and charismatic murderers. With a mixture of anxiety and fascination, Amis chronicles the "cheapening of humanity," a phenomenon he attributes, partly, to the uniquely twentieth century prospect of total annihilation and partly to the fact that much of American (and more lately British) life is dedicated to televised "event glamour"a phrase borrowed from Amis's mentor, Saul Bellow. Both writers maintain that popular sporting/religious extravaganzas give a false sense of collective life experience. Moreover, says Amis, channel-hoppers skip through tabloid journalism shows, cursory reports of sex scandals and riots, and mini-series on serial killers, delighting only in unsavory special effects. "It's a distracted age," Amis notes gravely; "the narrative line in human life is gone," and with it, he suggests, human decency ("Modernity"). Because the "decline of the West" is Amis's subject, he has earned a bad reputation for playing the social critic, or if you prefer, for being a quixotic champion of bygone values. R The Sun Also Rises, that "nobody ever lives their life all the way up except bull-fighters," but he thought that as a writer he should try. He succeeded, at least if public notice is the criterion; but he was too intelligent not to understand the cost of this irrelevant triumph, musing in his Nobel Prize acceptance speech that "writing, at its best, is a lonely life.... [The writer] grows in public stature as he sheds his loneliness and often his work deteriorates." Discuss this column in the forum of
A great deal of precious energy is wasted in this way, and energy has a peculiar importance, perhaps especially where American male authors are concerned. Saul Bellow thought that "the code of the athlete, of the tough boy," was "an American inheritance ... from the English gentleman that curious mixture of striving, asceticism and rigor, the origins of which some trace back to Alexander the Great." Nowadays there is evidence that some Englishmen are trying to retrieve their lost virtue, and the way they go about it is to imitate American energy. Nothing is more inventive or changes as fast as American slang, and nobody notices and imitates it more promptly than certain English writers. A whole generation of sophisticated English readers believes that nowadays the best writing in the language is American Don DeLillo, Elmore Leonard, and, to go back a little, Saul Bellow.

Biography
Martin Amis
Writer England Born 25 Aug 1949
Martin Amis was born in Oxford. He was educated in Britain, Spain and the USA, attending over 13 schools and then a series of crammers in London and Brighton. He gained a first in English at Exeter College, Oxford. Martin Amis has been an editorial assistant on The Times Literary Supplement and was Literary Editor of the New Statesman from 1977 until 1979 before working as a Special Writer on the Observer. He now contributes to the Independent on Sunday. His publications include two collections of essays, 'The Moronic Inferno' and, more recently 'Visiting Mrs Nabokov', as well as 'Einstein's Monsters', a collection of stories about the nuclear age.
Martin Amis has been highly praised as a novelist ever since the publication of his first book, 'The Rachel Papers' in 1974, which won a Somerset Maugham Award and has since been made into a popular film. Following this with his novels 'Dead Babies', 'Success', 'Other People: A Mystery Story', 'Money', 'London Fields' and 'Time's Arrow' - shortlisted for the 1991 Booker Prize - Amis's writing has been called (among other things) 'powerful and obsessive' by JG Ballard, 'terminally funny' by the Guardian and by John Walsh, writing in the Evening Standard, 'full of risky, throw-away conceits and perfectly cadenced gems of description'.

    No More Illusions
Martin Amis is Getting Old and Wants to Talk About It
by Alexander Laurence and Kathleen McGee We looked forward to talking with Martin Amis, British novelist, and author of the new book, The Information (Harmony). He is the author of numerous books, including Money, London Fields, The Rachel Papers, Time's Arrow, and Visiting Mrs Nabokov. Like many, we had read the pre-publication publicity articles in The New Yorker and Vanity Fair. The media circus treated his new book as if Kato Kaelin wrote the next Ulysses. Amis complained about being misquoted in The Chronicle, an article which came out the morning we interviewed him. He called the article sloppy and atrocious. Amis pointed out that the writer had misquoted him as saying "desperation" instead of "desertion;" while he drank a "Virgin mary" not a "Bloody mary." He ordered another one while we talked to him in a hotel around Union Square about his new novel. Much hoopla had already been made about his large advance, his new set of teeth, his mid-life crisis, his divorce, but we focused on the art of fiction.
    Alexander Laurence:
