Special report: terrorism in the US
Martin Amis
Tuesday September 18, 2001
The Guardian
It was the advent of the second plane, sharking in low over the Statue of Liberty: that was the defining moment. Until then, America thought she was witnessing nothing more serious than the worst aviation disaster in history; now she had a sense of the fantastic vehemence ranged against her. I have never seen a generically familiar object so transformed by effect. That second plane looked eagerly alive, and galvanised with malice, and wholly alien. For those thousands in the south tower, the second plane meant the end of everything. For us, its glint was the worldflash of a coming future. Terrorism is political communication by other means. The message of September 11 ran as follows: America, it is time you learned how implacably you are hated. United Airlines Flight 175 was an Intercontinental Ballistic Missile aimed at her innocence. That innocence, it was here being claimed, was a luxurious and anachronistic delusion. Several lines of US policy were bankrupted by the events of last Tuesday, among them national missile defence. Someone realised that the skies of America were already teeming with missiles, each of them primed and cocked.

MARTIN AMIS
Vakmerõ elszántsággal készítette elõ a Támadás a 13-as Kvazárrólt arra, hogy postára adja. Naivul epekedõ ujjlenyomatokkal hitelesítette a gépelt lapokat.

FRAGMENTS FROM A MARTIN AMIS READING Someone from Chapters visited cardigan.com once, then attempted to return the HTML for credit six weeks later. The event has been organized by a certain book retailing operation which, after forcing all the independent booksellers in Canada out of business, spent last year firehosing money at its online division, much to the detriment of its market cap. Recently its CEO soothed his shareholders by announcing that the operation plans to move away from books into more profitable, and less unpredictable, product lines like household furnishings and gardening tools. All the best to you, Larry. Amis knows how to warm up a room. On the London Fields Settling in to read from Experience, he delivers another Rushdie anecdote about an argument over Samuel Beckett:
No answer: only the extreme hooded-eye treatment.
Feeling my father in me now (as well as the couple hundred glasses of wine consumed at the party we had all come from), I settled down for a concerted goad and wheedle. By this stage Salman looked like a falcon staring through a venetian blind.
There follow lots of tales of famous literary lions, then something about how his father Kingsley was once told to fuck off by a dog.

ike the sweat of lust and guilt, the sweat of death trickles through Lolita . I wonder how many readers survive the novel without realizing that its heroine is, so to speak, dead on arrival, like her child. Their brief obituaries are tucked away in the 'editor's' Foreword, in nonchalant, school-newsletter form: 'Mona Dahl' is a student in Paris. 'Rita' has recently married the proprietor of a hotel in Florida. Mrs. 'Richard F. Schiller' died in childbed, giving birth to a stillborn girl, on Christmas Day 1952, in Gray Star, a settlement in the remotest Northwest. 'Vivian Dark-bloom' has written a biography ... Then, once the book begins, Humbert's childhood love Annabel dies, at thirteen (typhus), and his first wife Valeria dies (also in childbirth), and his second wife Charlotte dies ('a bad accident'though of course this death is structural), and Charlotte's friend Jean Farlow dies at thirty-three (cancer), and Lolita's young seducer Charlie Holmes dies (Korea), and her old seducer Quilty dies (murder: another structural exit). And then Humbert dies (coronary thrombosis). And then Lolita dies. And her daughter dies. In a sense Lolita is too great for its own good. It rushes up on the reader like a recreational drug more powerful than any yet discovered or devised. In common with its narrator, it is both irresistible and unforgivable. And yet it all works out. I shall point the way to what I take to be its livid and juddering heartwhich is itself in prethrombotic turmoil, all heaves and lifts and thrills.

Amis, Martin
The son of English novelist Kingsley Amis , Martin Amis has solidified his own reputation as a brilliant British novelist whose fast paced prose is augmented with vulgar profanity, loose sex, drugs, and violence. Amis uses these themes to create characters with questionable morals and sadistic intentions whose actions defy logical reason and conventional wisdom. Often times his novels serve as wake up calls and warnings, cautioning the reader on disturbing trends and dangers that are threatening or are already inflicting society. His novels and prose have been compared to such literary giants as Saul Bellow Vladamir Nabokov , Jonathon Swift, and James Joyce . He has influenced a whole new generation of British and American novelists and along with such writers as Julian Barnes and Will Self, stands atop Britain's literary world. The Martin Amis Anthology is designed for the Amis reader and/or beginner in the hopes that they will find a better understanding of the author's life, intentions, and influences, so that they may fell compelled to read more of essays and novels from his impressive collection. Listed is a brief synopsis of Amis's current achievements as well as personal information about the author and his influences. Among the works listed are: The Rachel Papers, Dead Babies, My Oxford, Success, Other People: A Mystery Story,Invasion of the Space Invaders, The Moronic Inferno and Other Visits to America, Einstien's Monsters,London Fields, Money: A Suicide Note, Visiting Mrs. Nabokov, Time's Arrow,The Information.
