HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN
By Georg Lober, 1892-1961
Central Park, Conservatory Lake, New York City
Hans Christian Andersen is the author of many folktales. He wrote "The Ugly Duckling," "The Emperor's New Clothes," "The Princess and the Pea" and "The Little Mermaid." Hans Christian Andersen was born in 1805 in Odense, Denmark, and died in 1875 in Copenhagen, Denmark. His stories have been the favorite of many children and have been translated into more than 100 languages. In this sculpture by Georg Lober, Hans Christian Andersen is shown as a kind, friendly man holding a large, open book. The artist made the sculpture large enough so that children could climb up and sit in Hans Christian Andersen's lap to look into the book. Sculptures in playgrounds are usually okay for climbing. Climbing on others is not a good idea. Georg Lober was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His parents were born in Denmark, like Hans Christian Andersen. Lober did many public sculptures in a realistic style with careful attention to detail. Most of his sculptures are made of bronze or marble. He was also an advocate for artists and their well-being. For almost twenty years, he was the leader of the New York City Art Commission. Hans Christian Anderson: Immortal Storyteller
Hans Christian Anderson was born on April 2, 1805, and his early life was full of great sadness. His family was very poor. His father was a sad shoemaker. His father would read him a story every day at 2:00. His father died when he was 11 years old. When Hans Anderson was the age of 14 he ran away to Copenhagen. Anderson was Denmark's most famous author. Anderson wrote as many as 350 stories. His books are read all over the world. Here are 5 of the many stories hewrote: THE UGLY DUCKLING , THE EMPEROR'S NEWCLOTHES, THE LITTLE MERMAID , THUMBELINA, THE RED SHOES. One of his most interesting book's is THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES It is about a king who is very vain,and two people teach him a lesson. Anderson always wanted new things, but he could not buy them. This story is a reflection of his life. All of the stories Anderson wrote were with a great desire to make people laugh. He also wrote because he didn't want children to have a sad childhood as he did. He also wanted to fill little girls and little boys hearts full of joy and laughter. He always wrote with a sly humor. Through his writings, Anderson felt more self fulfilled. Even after his death Hans Christian Anderson is still remembered today. Hans Anderson died on August 4, 1875. Denmark's people always celebrate his birthday with a party called "Odin Story Day". The Anderson home in Odense is now a museum, and thousand of people visit it every year. After he died people read his stories and loved them just like when he was alive.

Biography
Hans Christian Andersen was born in the slums of Odense. His father was a shoemaker and literate. His mother, who worked as washerwoman, was uneducated and superstitious, but opened for his son the world of folklore. Andersen's half-sister worked as a prostitute for a time. Andersen received little education, and as a child he was highly emotional, suffering all kinds of fears and humiliations because of his tallness and effeminate interests. Andersen's hysterical attacks of cramps were falsely diagnosed as epileptic fits. Encouraged by his mother he composed his own fairy tales and arrange puppet theatre shows. In 1816 his father died and Andersen was forced to go to work. He was for a short time apprenticed to a weaver and tailor, and he also worked at a tobacco factory. Once his trousers were pulled down when other workers suspected that he was a girl. At the age of 14 Andersen moved to Copenhagen to start a career as a singer, dancer or an actor - he had a beautiful soprano voice. The following three years were full of hardships although he found supporters who paved his way to the theatre. Andersen succeeded in becoming associated with the Royal Theater, but he had to leave it when his voice began to change. When he was casually referred as a poet it changed his plans: "It went through me, body and soul, and tears filled my eyes. I knew that, from this very moment, my mind was awake to writing and poetry." He then began to write plays, all of which were rejected.

Hans Christian Andersen
Danish writer who combined folk legends, moral teachings and humor with his own great imagination and produced fairy tales, which were not meant merely for children but for adults as well. Andersen used frequently colloquial style that disguises the sophistication of his tales. Before achieving success as a playwright and novelist, Andersen was trained as singer and actor. Many of Andersen's fairy tales depict characters who gain happiness in life after suffering and conflicts. 'The Ugly Duckling' is Andersen's most confessional work.

Hans Christian Andersen

Die Tropfen drangen durch die Schneedecke hinab in die Erde;
