Gail Anderson-Dargatz, the award-winning, #1 bestselling author of The Cure for Death by Lightning and A Recipe for Bees , returns in full flower with a novel that is as funny as it is beautiful, and will seem as familiar to her fans as it is unexpected.
Job Sunstrum is a man with many masters. He is a shy, angelic-looking blond who loves to cook, but it is only his skill as a farmer hard won after years of being pushed around by his abusive father and bossed by his older brother that means he is tolerated in the rough-and-tumble Baptist world of Godsfinger, Alberta. He is put to the test when, at the urging of his pastor brother, he succumbs to the seductive rantings of a Pentecostal preacher, Jack Divine, and chooses to become a foot soldier in the army of the Lord. But his total immersion in the religious life unexpectedly leads him to wonder what his chances are for love of a more earthly nature.

LIVING IN OPPOSITION... Ceratin to appeal to readers who enjoyed Aleksandr Huth's Wives of the Fisherman, Gail Anderson-Dargatz's A Recipe for Bees is an experience akin to sitting around the kitchen table listening to family stories. Anderson-Dargatz cleverly reveals her main character, Augusta Olsen, by letting Augusta share memories of her life. From her childhood through adulthood and into old age, Augusta is fashioned by the opposites in her nature. She desires independence but marries before she can graduate high school; she values speaking the truth but never acknowledges the true paternity of her child; and she is blessed with premonitions but doesn't truly believe in them. Augusta's strongest trait is her best one - resiliency. The black-and-white photographs (from the author's family album) and the bee lore give further depth and charm to this novel. Contributed by the Adult Service Department, Rocky River Library, OH.

"I found I was becoming more prolific in large part because I've been experiencing what I call lactation brain. You know, with all those hormones you get a little fuzzy. And it used to take me about two hours to enter the writing headspace, which is that kind of fuzzy dreamy headspace. And now I'm there all the time! It never goes away." Whoever first quipped about turning lemons into lemonade and broken eggs into omelets must have been very like Gail Anderson-Dargatz. The 39-year-old author's second novel, A Recipe for Bees was based in part on Anderson-Dargatz' own recent family history. At the time of Bees ' publication, Anderson-Dargatz was quoted as saying that, in some ways, "this book was an anatomy of my parents' marriage, and many marriages I've witnessed." Her latest novel, A Rhinestone Button is not autobiographical, but the author found herself using her husband Floyd's brain surgery as a jumping off spot to explorations of the temporal kind.

“In language remarkable for its suppleness and unforced simplicity, Anderson-Dargatz delivers both a quirky love story and a serene meditation on endurance and its rich rewards.”
– THE WASHINGTON POST
“The novel’s chief strength lies in its focus on particulars and its richly drawn characters...[as well as] dead-on depiction of the indignities of aging and her loving accounts of the near-mystical behaviour of bees. LiTTerair: Gail Anderson-Dargatz

Beth Weeks lives on the edge of town. Hers is the last house before the reservation, the place where respectable girls don't go. She's surviving and just barely the months before her 16th birthday. These are strange days: Her life, her family, her town, the whole world are all frighteningly unstable.

Jean said that she found this novel fascinating. She enjoyed the fact that it focused on the lives of some older people. The main character, Augusta, is a woman in her seventies. The story is set in rural British Colombia and the title of the book comes from its focus on bee-keeping practices. Jean said that it was a quiet but engrossing book.
