Gail Anderson-Dargatz's evocative novel of one woman's simple but passionately lived life reminds of us of the pleasure to be found in human contact and simple, natural things. Raised by her silent but companionable father and a mother who kept bees, headstrong Augusta marries shy, deferential Karl, twelve years her senior, and goes to live with him on his father's remote farm. Terrified that she will literally die from loneliness and isolation, she finds work in town, and for a short time, fulfillment with another man in a romance that will reverberate throughout her life. Not until many years later does she find her salvation in beekeeping, the practice she first learned from her mother. It is beekeeping that reconnects her to the world and at long last brings fire to her steadfast marriage. top of the page
  • A Recipe for Bees is set in a rural Canadian farming community. Are the expectations about love and marriage different in an agricultural society than they are in an urban area? How are Augusta's and Karl's concepts of marriage shaped by the demands of life on a farm? In what ways does Augusta's life reflect the kind of life most women were once expected to lead?

    February 18, 2000

Although you may not have heard of her yet, author Gail Anderson-Dargatz is not new to fiction writing, she's already a bestselling author in Canada and has been published in the UK. Now, luckily for us, we can enjoy her compassionate characters and poignant prose in her novel A RECIPE FOR BEES. This book backtracks through the life of main character Augusta and her family, as they struggle over land, love, and ultimately for life. TBR Senior Writer Jana Siciliano asks Dargatz about the autobiographical aspects of her novel, her intimate relationship with bees, her thoughts on marriage, love, and prejudice then and now in this telling interview.
TBR: Please explain, for those who aren't as familiar with your book, how closely related A RECIPE FOR BEES is to your actual life experiences?

    47. Review Of: The Cure For Death By Lightning By Gail Anderson-Dargatz

By Kim Wells Review of: The Cure For Death by Lightning by Gail Anderson-Dargatz
I'll admit a disquieting little secret before I tell you about this novel by Gail Anderson-Dargatz: I sometimes judge a book by its cover. Shhh Don't tell anyone. The Cure For Death by Lightning in its hardbound edition, has a spiffy, colorful cover with a young girl standing in a field of blowing red and wheat colored plants and she is actually being struck by lightning. Her entire body glows ethereally and I imagined her spirit hovering somewhere between voltage and flesh. Superimposed over the entire illustration is a sketch of a ghostly coyote; he is howling, but somehow his lips quirk upwards and I think he might be smiling. So I was intrigued when I saw the book on the stack of "bargain books" at the local super bookstore (you know the one I'm talking about). I had been looking for a quick read over summer and this book's cover caused me to think that this time I might find something I like in the bargain books section (you see, I had been fooled by cheap prices before).

    By Gail Anderson-Dargatz
Knopf Canada (319 pgs/$35.95) "My husband had brain surgery in 1994," says author Gail Anderson-Dargatz, explaining the genesis of the lead character in her newest novel, A Rhinestone Button . "And before the tumor was found, or we even knew that he was ill, he had lots of very magical, very odd and also very terrifying perceptual experiences. All that was happening while I was working on this book, and I got very interested in faith experiences and the role perception played in them. I wanted to communicate that, but of course, one of the aspects of a mystical experience is that you can’t articulate it." Enter Job Sunstrum, farmer and resident of Godsfinger, Alberta. He’s a simple man, more at home in his kitchen than working on his farm. He also has synaesthesia, the ability to see and feel sound, usually in colors or shapes. "Not a lot of people have it, so I used it to try to get the reader and myself into it in a very physical and tactile way, so they could, at least in some way, have that mystical experience." The engaging, darkly humorous novel follows Job, a farmer and devout Christian, as he wrestles with issues of faith, love and hope in the community of Godsfinger. In the pantheon of hard-luck characters created by Anderson-Dargatz for such bestselling novels as

"Auspicious Beginnings" Gail Anderson-Dargatz The Cure for Death by Lightning. Alfred A. Knopf $28.95 Order It! Terry Griggs The Lusty Man. Porcupine's Quill. $16.95 Order It! Reviewed by Marilyn J. Rose In these first novels, Gail Anderson-Dargatz and Terry Griggs offer readers a great deal in terms of the "pleasure of the text." The novels do seem somewhat diffuse. Both writers published short story collections prior to these novels: Griggs' Quickening was short-listed for the Governor-General's Award for fiction in 1990 and Anderson-Dargatz's The Miss Hereford Stories appeared in 1994. In turning to longer fiction, it is as if each has attempted to include too much, to touch too many bases in getting to novel length, and the ensuing books sometimes give the impression, like Stephen Leacock's horseman, of riding off in all directions at once. At the same time there is a certain charm in the sheer energy that characterizes The Cure for Death by Lightning and The Lusty Man

Anderson-Dargatz nominated for Giller Prize Novelist Gail Anderson-Dargatz-who studied writing at UVic-has received a Giller Prize nomination for her second novel, A Recipe for Bees. She's in a group of six authors shortlisted for the $25,000 fiction award. The winner will be announced Nov. 3 in Toronto, with the cable channel Bravo! providing live coverage. Anderson-Dargatz read from her new novel Sept. 18 at the writing department's 25th anniversary celebration. She recently completed her course work and is to receive her bachelor of fine arts degree in November. A Recipe for Bees is set in the Shuswap and explores the nature of family, relationships, and love with protagonist Augusta Olsen. It's her second Giller nomination, the first was for The Cure for Death by Lightning in 1996. Anderson-Dargatz's mentor, fiction professor Jack Hodgins, was left off the Giller list for his well-received new novel Broken Ground-causing some grumbling according to the Globe and Mail's account of the shortlist announcement. More than 60 novels and short-story collections were reviewed by judges Margaret Atwood, Guy Vanderhaeghe and Peter Gzowski. The Giller Prize was founded in 1994 by Toronto entrepreneur Jack Rabinovitch in memory of his late wife Doris Giller, literary journalist and book-lover.

    A RECIPE FOR BEES
Gail Anderson-Dargatz (Knopf, $32.95) It sounds like a hoary CanLit cliche: an aged woman looks back on life, reflecting on all its prosaic surfaces and stormy inner passions. The Stone Angel, anyone? But don't be too quick to dismiss A Recipe for Bees , the followup to Gail Anderson-Dargatz's career-making 1996 blockbuster The Cure for Death by Lightning . Anderson-Dargatz strikes an appealing, sure-handed balance between the detail of everyday life and the grandeur of her own imagination, and A Recipe for Bees overcomes a slow start to emerge as a surprisingly affecting read. The novel's framing device is an anxious vigil maintained by Augusta and Karl Olsen, awaiting word on their son-in-law, who is undergoing risky brain surgery. A former farm wife and beekeeper, Augusta is lost in memories: of her childhood as a farmer's daughter in the postwar B.C. Interior, blighted by hard times, her mother's affair with a hired hand and small-town gossips; of the loveless early years of her own marriage, marked by bitter power struggles with an odious father-in-law; and of her own illicit affair, which produced a daughter who grows up resentful and sullen. The novel's early pages, it should be noted, don't do much to compel the reader to keep going. The time-shifting between present and past is awkwardly paced, with neither period particularly involving. And Anderson-Dargatz takes her time in developing her characters. Indeed, some of the side players remain sketchy throughout the book.

A Rhinestone Button by Gail Anderson-Dargatz ISBN: 0-676-97549-6 Strong characters and a knack for taking ordinary things like family recipe books, making honey, or collecting buttons on a safety pin, and imbuing them with rich layers of literary and symbolic meaning is what makes Gail Anderson-Dargatz’s novels such a delight. That and a clear, approachable style, which invites the reader in and makes reading her books seem effortless. Her new novel, A Rhinestone Button , has all those qualities. Job Sunstrum has synaesthesia, a condition where a person sees and feels sounds, as well as hearing them. Job, a young beef farmer, who has grown up in a strict Baptist family in Godsfinger, Alberta, knows he is different from others but has always taken the colors as a sign from God. The colors and feelings evoked by sounds give him "a feeling of aha! Of eureka! … At these times he knew God was real with the same instinctive confidence with which he knew how to breathe." But since his name is Job, his father is Abe, his brother is Jacob, and the book begins with a biblical quote: "Once upon a time, in the land of Uz, there was a man named Job. He was a man of perfect integrity, who feared God and avoided evil," we know he’s going to be sorely tested.

    Buzzing About

I wouldn't go so far as to identify bees as Satan's spawn. Well, actually, I would. Any creature that stings, in my book, is not good. Author Gail Anderson-Dargatz , who appears at Joseph-Beth Booksellers Monday, May 21, at 7 p.m., has a different take on God's honey-producers. "They become kind of like pets. You really get to know them. You have to remain calm or else you get stung, obviously. You have to enter into it in a very calm state," she says. The subject of bees is one near and dear to the author's heart. Her husband, Floyd, is a beekeeper. It's but one way her life and her novels are interconnected. Her third book, A Recipe for Bees , centers on Augusta Olsen, a teen-ager on a rural farm who takes up her mother's trade as a beekeeper. It proves to be life-changing for Augusta, who has to cope with a confining marriage, an extramarital affair and some pesky premonitions.
