23. Religion In The Fiction Of Poul Anderson
Article by Glenn T. McDavid.
http://www.winternet.com/~gmcdavid/html_dir/anderson.html
Religion in the fiction of Poul Anderson
Much of Poul Anderson's fiction is set in his "Technic Civilization" universe. Nicholas van Rijn and his associates are important characters in many of these stories. One of his contemporaries, and perhaps a competitor, is Martin Schuster, the master trader in "The Three-cornered Wheel" (the first part of The Trouble Twisters ). Schuster knows and respects Jewish traditions. He uses his knowledge of the Kabbalah to deal with the theocracy that the protagonists confront. Centuries later, but in the same universe, we find Admiral Juan Cajal of the Terran Empire. Cajal commands the attack on the Domain of Ythri in The People of the Wind . Cajal is a devout Roman Catholic, and is portrayed very sympathetically in a story that is more a conflict more of good against good than of good against evil. Anderson's fantasy provides a variety of other interesting examples. The novel Three Hearts and Three Lions is based on the myths of Catholic medieval Europe. The symbols of Catholic Christianity are an important part of the forces of law (the good side, opposed to "chaos") in that story. At the end of the story Holger Carlsen, the Danish hero, is received into the Roman Catholic Church. Anderson has linked characters from several of his series in the taproom of The Old Phoenix , and there Holger Carlsen meets Prince Rupert of the Rhine, hero of A Midsummer Tempest.

Poul Anderson by Michael A. Gardner
April 21, 1997 Much could be said about his writing style, All One Universe , which is a collection of several short stories and essays, was used as a sampling of the types of works that Anderson wrote. This, by no means is all inclusive since, although the works of this book cover several genres of writing, the only way to get a complete feel for his writing styles and the evolution of his writing styles would be to read several books from some of his various publishing periods. As was stated before Anderson has published many works in a variety of fields, making him accessible to a large cross-section of readers. Based on insights gathered from reading All One Universe One thing that can be said for Anderson is that he knows who many of the pioneers in Science Fiction are, and he spends some time devoted to writing about them in All One Universe Anderson also spends significant time dealing with history in his stories. Several of the short stories in All One Universe His opinions on science fiction as a genre have also significantly effected his writing style. "Science fiction does have one virtue, one lesson to teach: its acceptance of science as a legitimate human activity; it attempts to re-examine the human condition in radically changed environments, under the light of radically new factual knowledge" (Bainbridge, P14) He has shaped many of his works in such a way as to show the validity of this claim. Several of the essays and short stories in

Poul Anderson
"Life...is ultimately tragic, but mostly it is wonderful..." He was a main structural beam in the house of Science Fiction. Poul believed that men, and those who aspired to that title, were born with obligations and had a duty to fulfill those obligations...no matter the cost, no matter the time, and could not find honor by doing otherwise. And because he was so successful and prolific at writing science fiction, a large body of work is based on themes revolving around that central idea. Soldiers say it differently, "The Corp, the Corp, and nothing but the Corp." Poul thought of mankind in science fiction and fantasy that way. Yet, Life shaped him and he felt things...he was subjective and romantic...and he sometimes let the beauty of the thing win out over science and knowledge. It was, after all, fiction.

The Hallway The Library The Gallery The Music Room ... The Links "Starfarers", by Poul Anderson Tor, US paperback, October 1999 (© 1998), $6.99, 512 pages. ISBN 0-812-54599-0 Caesarism rears its rather ugly head again in Poul Anderson's latest, though only briefly. I suppose it's to help illuminate the temporary nature of our current of the cyclical theory of history - (or any) political arrangements. I'm pretty sure that Anderson is an adherent much of his previous work, such as the Polesotechnic Leagueconsistent with this - /Terran Empire/Flandry future history, seems to be although I don't think he sees it as being as rigid as the kind of Spenglerian scheme that Blish followed in Anderson's "Cities in Flight". is an approach which seems more realistic to me. Anderson certainly gets his opportunity to illustrate this in "Starfarers", though given the span of time involved - 10,000 years - he has to paint with a pretty broad brush. Interestingly, rather than create a completely new future for this story, as he had done in recent years with his Anson Guthrie novels, he has gone back to a much older (dating to the late 1950s/early 1960s, I think), and, I suspect, less well-known series, the Kith stories, and used them as a background to this novel, even to the extent of merging two such stories into it. And yet, and yet..... At the end he turns it all around, we have grounds for optimism - maybe there is a future for humanity and freedom after all. And he pulls it off fairly well, though perhaps this section of the novel could have benefitted from several extra chapters to fully justify this.
