An excellent storyteller, Anderson seems to be preoccupied by a need to describe the plight of the "grotesque" - the unsuccessful, the deprived, and the inarticulate. He sensitively describes poverty and eccentricity. His simple style, in the oral tradition of storytelling, influenced writers like Hemingway and Faulkner who, in 1956, acknowledged Anderson as "the father of my generation of American writers and the tradition of American writing which our successors will carry on." Primary Works Windy McPherson's Son Marching Men Winesburg, Ohio The Triumph of the Egg (short stories), 1921; Many Marriages Horses and Men (short stories), 1923; Dark Laughter Death in the Wood (short stories), 1933; Kit Brandon Top Selected Bibliography Anderson, David D., ed.

Classroom Issues and Strategies
Teachers should avoid three erroneous approaches to Sherwood Anderson's writings: regarding him primarily as a novelist, as a regional writer, or as author of only one important book, Winesburg, Ohio Regarding the first error: even in his best novel, Poor White , Anderson has difficulty sustaining plot and characterization. Anderson succeeds best in the smaller narrative form of the short story. "Hands" and "Death in the Woods" exemplify many of the characteristics of the masterpieces of Anderson's story-telling art: direct authorial address to the reader; a circular, not linear, narrative structure; plot subordinated to characterization; simple style and vocabulary; and images drawn from elemental aspects of nature. Regarding the second error: Although Anderson is one of the many regional writers who chronicle the changes that took place in the Midwest at the turn of the century as a result of industrialization, primary emphasis should be placed on his role as a story-teller. Regarding the third error: Neither Winesburg, Ohio

Anderson, Sherwood
Sherwood Anderson was born in Camden, Ohio and raised in nearby Clyde. He began his writing career in 1913 after having served in the Spanish-American War, working as a copywriter in Chicago, and managing a paint plant in Elryia, Ohio.
Writer whose prose style, derived from everyday speech, influenced American short story writing between World Wars I and II. Sherwood Anderson was born in Camden, Ohio. His parents led travelling life, moving from place to another after work. At the age of 17 Anderson moved to Chicago where worked in several jobs. During the Spanish-American war Anderson fought in Cuba and returned after the war to Ohio. His life calmed down with marriage and with a work as director of a painting firm. When he started to earn enough from his writings he quit the business world. His first novels, WINDY MCPHERSON'S SON (1916) and MARCHING MEN (1917), were written while he was still a manufacturer. Anderson travelled widely and became well known figure in literary circles. In Chicago Anderson made friends with Carl Sandburg , in Paris he met Gertrude Stein and after he returned back to the United States he encouraged William Faulkner and Ernest Hemingway in their writing aspirations. After travels in Europe Anderson settled in New Orleans, where he wrote among others novel DARK LAUGHTER (1925). From New Orleans he moved to New York for some years and from there finally to Marion, Virginia, where he worked as a farmer and journalist. Among Anderson's best known works is novel WINESBURG, OHIO (1919), compared ofter to Edgar Lee Master's Spoon River Anthology. Selected works:WINDY MCPHERSON'S SON, 1916, rev. ed., 1921

Sherwood Anderson - (1876-1941) Camden By Cindy Chang
Sycamore High School
Cincinnati, Ohio I. His Childhood What author influenced some of the most influential authors of all time such as Hemingway, Faulkner, Steinbeck, and Wolfe? That writer was Mr. Sherwood Anderson. He was born on September 13, 1876 in Camden, Ohio, the third of six children to Emma and Irwin Anderson. During the first years of his life, the family moved from village to village in Ohio. Due to Irwin's occupation as a harness maker it was necessary to be in constant search of a better paying opportunity, but their search ended when they finally settled in Clyde, Ohio (Hodgins 582). In his biography of Sherwood Anderson, Rex Burbank said "Clyde offered streams for fishing and swimming, beech woods for loafing and dreaming, and sprawling cornfields for the bucolic pleasures and furtive adventures of the small-town lad"(23). Growing up, however, Anderson found many flaws with the town. "Clyde lay stagnant between an exhausted agrarian era and a nascent industrial age…old men, young men, already failures in life-inspired ones, who from the beginning accepted failure-embraced it" (Burbank 23). Anderson would later express all this frustration and disappointment of a small town in his highly successful novel, Winesburg, Ohio.

    HEMINGWAY'S PARIS:
    WRITERS and BOOKS:
    Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941)
Ohio writer Anderson achieved fame with his third book, Winesburg, Ohio (1919), a collection of short stories about life in a small American town. Hemingway met Anderson in Chicago in 1921, and Anderson urged Ernest and Hadley to move to Paris. After their marriage on September 3, 1921, they took Anderson's advice, and he supplied them with letters of introduction for some of the leading literary figures in Paris. Hemingway's first American publication was with Boni and Liveright, also Anderson's publisher. Although Hemingway seems to have admired Anderson early, his pattern of turning against a mentor or friend held true in this case, too. Anderson's Dark Laughter , which appeared in 1925, prompted the satirical Torrents of Spring by Hemingway, which was so transparent an attack on the Anderson novel and style that Boni and Liveright had to reject the manuscript, thereby breaking their contract with Ernest, and leading him to Scribner's, with whom he was associated the rest of his life.
