APULEIUS and the Golden Ass
Lucius Apuleius lived and wrote in Latin in Romanized North Africa around the middle of the 2 nd c. A.D. He was well versed in the popular Greek writing of the time, and shows in all his prose a strong interest in the supernatural, in Eastern religions, and in magic. In fact he was accused of casting spells on his wife by her family, and defended himself in the legal defense, or Apologia which we have. His interest in Greek philosophy led to the writing of a book of philosophical extracts, the Florida , an essay on Plato, another on Socrates' theology, and a translation from a spurious work of Aristotle De Mundo. But he is known mainly for his Metamorphoses , a prose romantic novel in eleven books which we have complete, written in an flowery but engaging and quite readable style modeled on the Greek Romances. However his vocabulary is large and the reader will often find his nose in the dictionary. The most famous of the many encapsulated stories is the long account of Cupid and Psyche, which is amazingly close to the Germanic Cinderella tale. The Metamorphoses often referred to as The Golden Ass, is written in a Grecizing style, with fairly involved syntax, couched in a large vocabulary. These things make Apuleius slightly difficult reading, but the engaging storytelling and natural flow of ideas leads the student on easily. Since the Renaissance the book has had a wide following, however it has never become a basic part of the modern Classical canon of authors, perhaps because of the novelistic form, the popular interests, including magic, and the post-Classical style of writing. This is unfortunate, since the Metamorphoses offers fascinating reading material for intermediate students who are developing their reading skills. There is a good Loeb edition from Harvard U Pr., , the most readily accessible editions for general use, although without app. crit. or notes.

FISH (29) Now, as I planned, I will proceed to all those ravings of this Aemilianus you see before you. I will start with what you heard being said at the outset, this allegedly powerful argument for the suspicion of magic: that I ordered some species of fish from fishermen for money. So which of these two points can make one suspect magic? The fact that fishermen tried to catch fish for me? Of course, this task should have been entrusted to embroiderers and carpenters! The activity of each craft ought to have been exchanged, if I had wanted to avoid your false claims: the carpenter should have netted fish, and in return the fisherman should have shaped wood!

Lucius Apuleius was a philosopher and rhetorician tried for using magic to win an older, wealthy bride, but he's better known for his novel about the mysteries of Isis, the tale of Cupid and Psyche, and the semi-biographical misadventures of its hero, Lucius. He was born in about 124 in Madauros, Numidia, received his education in Carthage and Athens and then traveled around the Mediterranean learning about religious mystery rites. In 158 he delivered a speech recorded as Apologia Apuleii in the multicultural town of Sabratha, Tripolitania (modern Libya), as a defense against the charge of using magic to win a wealthy older bride, Pudentilla. CHALDEAN MAGI
Apuleius. Apologia sive de Magica
Do you hear, you who so rashly accuse the art of magic? It is an art acceptable to the immortal gods, full of all knowledge of worship and of prayer, full of piety and wisdom in things divine, full of honour and glory since the day when Zoroaster and Ahura Mazda established it, high-priestess of the powers of heaven. Nay, it is one of the first elements of princely instruction, nor do they lightly admit any chance person to be a magician, any more than they would admit him to be a king. Plato if I may quote him again in another passage dealing with a certain Zalmoxis, a Thracian and also a master of this art has written that magical charms are merely beautiful words. If that is so, why should I be forbidden to learn the fair words of Zalmoxis or the priestly lore. of Zoroaster?
Apuleius. Apologia sive de Magica
But it is a common and general error of the uninitiated to bring the following accusations against philosophers. Some of them think that those who explore the origins and elements of material things are irreligious, and assert that they deny the existence of the gods. Take, for instance, the cases of Anaxagoras, Leucippus, Democritus, and Epicurus, and other natural philosophers. Others call those magicians who bestow unusual care on the investigation of the workings of providence and unusual devotion on their worship of the gods, as though, forsooth, they knew how to perform everything that they know actually to be performed. So Epimenides, Orpheus, Pythagoras, and Ostanes were regarded as magicians, while a similar suspicion attached to the purifications of Empedocles, the `demon' of Socrates and the `good' of Plato. I congratulate myself therefore on being admitted to such distinguished company.

The Golden Ass of Apuleius Mythology and Consciousness The Golden Ass,written by Apuleius in the second century A.D.,is a rewarding read for anyone embarking on the exploration of Consciousness. It is very simply the story of a young man who is punished for his ignorant behaviour by being metamorphosed into an ass.Paradoxically it is while he is an ass that he begins to understand the nature of Consciousness. Lucius, the "hero" of this story, sets out on a journey to acquire power by learning the secrets of magic. In tantric terminology he is trying to tap into feminine energies via the left-hand path. If we relate this to our map of Consciousness,Lucius is identifying with the mindless emotions of Netzach (Aphrodite),while splitting himself from the wisdom of Binah, and the consequences are predictable. In this story the dark aspect of the Goddess,Netzach, appears in the person of the witch,Meroe.Lucius is initially terrified of Meroe when he sees her murdering an acqauintance of his named Socrates. However, when he meets another witch Pamphile and her slave-girl Fotis his desire to learn their magic becomes intense. When he learns that Fotis has access to an ointment which could turn a human being into a bird,he begs her to give him some of this. Her feelings towards him are ambiguous, and she "mistakenly" gives him a different ointment which turns him into an ass who has the mind of a human being. He literally makes an ass of himself. What at first sight seems a disaster turn out to be salvation for Lucius,as he is now forced to ask himself those questions he had previously neglected:"Who am I,an ass or a human being?","Why am I here?","How did I come to be here?".Thus he dicovers Consciousness.

This person is currently certified at Apprentice level. Name: Omri Schwarz Homepage: http://www.mit.edu/~ocschwar Recent diary entries for Apuleius: 27 Aug 2000 So y'all know about the recent DeCSS decisions. I'm ready to challenge them with a Perl script. Here it is. 20 Apr 2000 My PBS wrapper scripts now deal with the MPI Chameleon implementation and will deal with the coming version of LAM-MPI. In the meantime, I notice that PGPDOMO is nowhere to be seen, but since there is a Perl module for Gnu Privacy Guard has been written, and majordomo is a set of Perl scripts, that it's time I wrote something usefull. Voila: Wizzier, a way to have privacy-protected mailing lists. It's in the works. 17 Apr 2000 I finished my first open source project and posted it for distribution. It's a set of wrapper scripts for the Portable Batch System which does execution queues for clusters. PBS is very nice except some of the user interface issues cause cluster users to bypass the queue system (users can be particularly reluctant to write their own shell scripts for every job they want in the queue). The wrapper scripts (all Perl) resolve that without heavy handed policies I've seen used in some cluster systems. (Like killing after 5 minutes any process that did not get started through the queue system.) It's too obscure even for Freshmeat, but it's my itch I'm scratching, so I actually unlamed long enough to get it done.
