En sus de son poste d’organiste à Saint Gervais, en 1656 Louis Couperin fut nommé Ordinaire de la Musique de la Chambre du Roy comme violiste. Dans ce rôle il participa à au moins quatre ballets de cour entre 1655 et 1660. Bien que la plupart de sa musique conservée fut écrite ou pour clavecin ou pour orgue (dont six divisions de basses à la manière de celles pour violes), il nous restent deux fantaisies ‘pour les Violes’ dessus et basse ainsi que deux fantaisies majestueuses pour cordes en cinq parties avec une mesure changeante évocatrice des airs d’opéra, qui furent probablement jouées comme entrées de ballet à la cour. Celle qu’on trouve sur cet enregistrement est datée du 24 avril 1655. La grandeur de La Piémontoise et la profondeur de la Pavanne en fa dièse mineur sont pimentées d’accords augmentés et de suspensions complexes. La Sultane de François Couperin, composée pour une alliance assez insolite de deux dessus, deux violes de gambe et continuo, date des années 1690, quand le goût italien faisait fureur en France. Brossard remarqua dans son Catalogue que ‘tous les compositeurs de Paris, et surtout les organistes, avaient en ce temps-là, pour ainsi dire, la fureur de composer des Sonates à la manière italienne’. Dans la Préface de ‘Les Nations’ de 1726 Couperin raconte qu’il avait lancé ses premières sonates à la manière italienne très astucieusement :

The programme presents an overview of the ensemble use of the viol in its various manifestations and stages of evolution in France. The Couperin dynasty offers a convenient chronological framework within which the viol could be heard in various guises: from a consort setting to a ‘pièces de clavecin en concerts’ configuration; from a six-string bass viol to a five-string hybrid ‘quinton’. Underpinning this programme is the historical practice of adaptation, transcription and arrangement with which French baroque music is replete.
